* I see many comments about me saying "Canada doesn't have racism" Now that I think about it, I realized I wasn't thinking straight. Of course racism exists everywhere. But the reason behind saying that is, growing up in Vancouver, Canada, I felt like it was less prevalent compared to other countries. When I was traveling to other countries, there were a lot of incidents where I was mistreated because I was an Asian. However, I feel like I wasn't mistreated for once because I was an Asian in Canada. (Maybe this is because I mostly stayed in Vancouver, especially in school campus) That's why I said compared to other countries, Canada doesn't have racism. But I feel like I said this in my perspective, not considering others who are actually experiencing racism in Canada. Sorry for the confusion, and I really apologize for saying that. :(

I'm Black and have visited Seoul and Busan, thankfully I didn't experience anything racist... I did get curious stares but that didn't bother me as much. I'm glad you made this video, more understanding and dialogue will bring our worlds closer together!
Well, I think that’s pretty normal for anyone to go to a country and you’re not native to them. I’m white and I would probably get stares too, because I’m white, and also fat lmao. They’re probably not not racist just don’t see much black or white people, etc. I don’t think it’s racism just surprised cause everyone is like them and it’s strange to see someone out of the ordinary. Probably wondering why you’re there. I don’t think that’s racist to stare. In America , it’s a diverse country and there’s a lot of people and you probably wouldn’t get stares because people are used to each other and being around different races unless it’s a person that never seen someone outside of their race before. That’s also common in America. So a not diverse country like Korea would probably wonder why someone not their race would be carrious and stare but I don’t think it’s out of racism.
6:40 It does happen a lot. And a lot of Foreigners open themselves up to it because they come here thinking Korean men would never do those things. I am half Korean and Black and I live in Daegu. My ex-boyfriend, I was with for 3 years. I later found out he had a string of online foreign girlfriends the entire time we dated. To top it all off, as soon as he got in a government position, he suddenly got engaged to some random Korean woman he barely knew. This is after I had a miscarriage and all. Just for play and the experience, not to marry I see. Korean people don't really bother me but I understand Korean, so I know when they are talking about me. It happens in restaurants, malls, lotte mart, just everywhere. So thankful I have my Korean family to lean on. I can't imagine what other foreigners face coming to a new country alone.
This video was extremely interesting. As a foreigner myself, its so insightful seeing various perspectives/experiences that people have went through, especially with it being a fellow black person. Loved it!
As a UK citizen I can only apologise for the experience you had in Adidas, it certainly is not behaviour I would accept as a manager from any of my staff. I can only hope that the rest of your visit was more pleasurable.
My friend and I both experienced racism here in London. I live in London with my family and I went to shops in central London with my Asian friend and have people followed me around. He could not understand why for the love of it, people came up to me asking was my boss look to buy ☺️. He then experiences it with people telling him to cover his face and threatened to spit on him. He was so hurt after experiencing it on both sides he started telling me to go to shops before him to see how staff behave before he spends his money. Was not fun as this is my home but we dwindled to a few places we will never go back to and some we will continue to enjoy when he is back in London. Racism is a horrible disease 😷 that needs a cure

I appreciate many young Koreans that are doing videos like this. They are attempting to learn from and about others. This will hopefully begin to erase the racial ignorance and practices of the elders. Keep talking. Keep sharing. Keep learning.💖
It's such a double edged sword. Some Koreans are racist against black people, however when in other countries, especially America, they're experiencing the same type of racism. Why can't we all just like or dislike a person based on character instead of the color of one's skin color? If I relied on the media to tell me about asians, I would have every stereotypical idea in my mind about them, but I don't rely on the media, I form my own personal opinions. Also, yes Canada does have racism. It's just not as prevalent as the United States, so please don't make a false statement like that. If you're going to do videos based on race, you have to be honest and not false advertise. The interview was okay. Trying to dumb down that Koreans aren't racist?? That's another falsity. I have been to Korea, and my visit there was fine, but some people want to touch my curly hair and that's a big NO. I was told I wasn't black because of my skin color, and I am most definitely a black woman with both parents being black. I'm just a lighter hue of a black woman. We just need to stop with the racist shit, and accept people for who they are.
Exactly if people can generalize then those shouldn't be mad when they get generalized for being violent especially Asian elders attacked and killed daily.
Apparantly Racism makes the world go round. Its fastest way to tell if you're a friend or foe. If we all were the same race it would something else like eye color or hair color that ppl would fight about. Tribalism will never die.

It’s 2021 & I’ll say since about 2016 social media has expanded & grown so for me personally there is no more excusing the racism in Korea by saying “ they aren’t educated “ there’s so much information on the internet for them to still be ignorant. Especially when Kpop idols are ignorant or so racist things because they are very aware of what’s disrespectful & what’s not because 90% they use social media . It’s hard for me to believe they can educate themselves enough on the trends that come from specific cultures or just copy a culture but can’t educate themselves on what’s appropriate & what’s not . Racism is TAUGHT ignorance, because at the end of the day a lot of the times you know if something you say is disrespectful or not
My daughter lived there for a year she was spit at , taxis like here in america wouldn't stop for her. It's not ignorance it is simply they don't care . There are no repercussions for racists acts in South Korea. The older generation won't change I hope at some point a lot of the younger one's will learn to be respectful. It also has a lot to do with their culture light and fair skinned is what is import that is their beauty standard so they aren't just racists against black people but their own as well. In bts RM is hated because he is considered too dark .

there's so much discriminstion and bullying in South Korea. I worked and lived among them for a year in the mid 80's. Frequented the country even after my contract finished till 2018 then stopped coming. I realized that Korea was one that triggered my severe depression in the early 2000's yet still traveled back in hopes that it is not that made me lonely and upset but throughout the years I was making business the more I became upset that even made me cried and run at the very moment back home. Unfortunately it wasn't possible as I need to tackle so many things before wrapping up my business in Seoul and Busan. Korea I must say isn't a country that you can settled in neither make business with rather than bring their business out of Korea. After my recovery, I moved my business to Bangkok and lived in peace with thais that even there is also a language barrier, I never experienced racism and bullying. After Japanese and Filipinos, I find Thais that is easy to get along with too. It's easy to build friendships while it is not with Koreans. For a year of living in Seoul and a business the exist for decades, I only have 2 genuine korean friends. Funny huh?
I am from Africa and I love foreigners. I love diversity, I love different cultures. If I would come across with a white or Asian I would just love to say 'hi'. And help them if they ever needed help and treat them with warmth and care. Because we are all human beings flesh and blood.

5:12 That is not racism. That is extreme rudeness and bullying and sure it's very wrong. However, racism is when someone hates the others because of their race (which is also wrong to do!) For example when someone would say or put a sign in front of some store saying something like: "no members of this or that race are allowed". That would be racist.
@@genju2147 Might be, however he does not describe the incident fully. Anyway, no one has a right to be rude toward a peaceful visitor asking for a direction (as described in the video).
@@AshalaySays We don't even know if that extremely rude person was Asian himself (though for some reason I think was white). There is lack of information in this particular video about it. Racism is the hate toward other races. In any case, both attitudes are unacceptable in any normal society. p.s. When it's against foreigners in general then it is called xenophobia and chauvinism.
Thank you for clearing that up, I was really confused for a sec there thinking I might have a wrong definition for racism in my mind. I found it interesting that she didn't clear that up in the video for him.
I am from Johannesburg, South Africa and I enjoyed this video. My sister right there is on point about everything and she definitely has the joburg accent.
im from south africa to. and Palesa wasn't wrong when she said music is a part of us because even when south africans protest we sing to. i love this country
I'm from the UK and can say that on the rare occasion I have witnessed blatant outspoken racism it completely shocked me. I can't believe that some people still hold this type of mindset.
A great video to create awareness, which is much needed in South Korea. However, Joonkik, I think you should also do a video about experiences from other cultures and races. I have also experienced racism in S.K, just due to the way I look. I have dark skin, and people generally just look down on me. Everyday when I walk on the streets, people who are walking towards to me would move onto the road just before passing me, as they are either scared of me or they think I might steal something from them. I am also gay, and in the gay community here, the majority of Korean guys would not even shed one minute of their time with me, either and I am too ugly for them, or it is my race/skin colour. I have been here for almost 7 months now, and all I wanted was to make friends with some Koreans, even just 1 Korean friend would make me so happy, but I guess that is too much to ask for here and I just don't know what to do anymore :(
I recently moved to Korea for my job and as an Indian/Australian girl I found that a lot of Korean's were super racist towards my ethnicity. As I grew up most my life in Australia, I naturally have a very Australian accent, and on more than one occasion I have had clients ask me if I was a 'Bogan'. I didn't take much offense to it, however whenever I met with clients, they would either become highly uncomfortable and would change to a different staff member or they would make a joke that went something like "I didn't know you were a redskin" or "Oh you're a Curry-Muncher?". And don't even get me started with dating or going out in public. Korea is unfortunately a super vain country and most of the people there believe that they're a superior race compared to others. I've literally been judged on the fact that my background comes for a "poor country". It's really tough there and unfortunealy you either get used to it or you leave.
@Ella I'm so sorry to hear that. As someone who's lived basically my whole life in Australia, I've never seen any sort of racism towards other ethnicities. I've always thought that Australia is a super multicultural country and the people are super respectful. It's sad that you didn't get to see that side of Australia. But I think your logic is a bit flawed. by being racist towards someone just because they were to you means you're becoming a part of the problem, so I suggest you don't do that :)
I'm so glad you covered this because some people act like racism doesn't exist in Korea at all and that is NOT okay. Palesa was so respectful I wouldn't have been as nice lol. The downside to Korea is definitely the sexism, xenophobia, and racism/discrimination. Racism happens a lot to foreigners/minorities in Korea unfortunately very few Koreans are actually nice to us. There is discrimination against being a foreigner, a different type of Asian race, and for being a woman it's ridiculous but not surprising if you look at how judgmental the Korean culture is.
I literally live around the corner from a venue with a “no foreigner” sign. It’s here and legal. The pandemic really brought out a lot of the discriminatory practices here and racial fears/biases.
She did not lie, I am a Zulu person and we kinda expect people to know Zulu, I dont impose it on others but subconsciously I do it, only because its statistically the most spoken language in SA.
Wow! Someone snatched his sunglasses off!!! Tantamount to assault. And what if he was blind. That salesperson didn't know, lawsuit right there Adidas$$$
Love the talk! I really hope we can all evolve to the point where things like color, nationatily, ethnicity will brings us closer because that's beautiful (we have so much to learn form people that are different from us) instead of keeping old and stupid concepts.
I want to go to Korea to find my twin sisters. My father had a set of twins, but passed away before we could find them. I wonder about them and the family I may have.
Canada has racism. I experienced it. I remember crying. It’s not something you see a lot of physically. But, go on the comment sections on Facebook, it’s shocking. People being blatantly racist hiding behind their phones. Makes me very cautious. I get worried about what my colleagues really think about me. But they all seem like great people.
So beautiful and he has chemistry with every one of these beautiful black young ladies he has an interview with. The comfort in which people open 👐 up with him speak of his personality. Gorgeous
I have been there (korea) before. In my opinion, older generation people are more rude and racist yet the younger generation is more polite and friendly due to exposure. But if you think about it, it's maybe due to "as one race country". Its understandable for them not to welcome foreigners, no matter what colour their skin is (including people from China, Philippines, Africa , etc as long they are not korean). And this thing happened in Japan too. But for the youngest generation, they seem happy to see foreigners, their friendly too and sometimes they try to make conversations with me and my family. I'm born and raised in the multiracial and rich country, yes, racist exist and happen everywhere, but see the people who are open criticise and show their racist minds, is cultural shock to me.
I was born and live in the UK and as a black person I can’t even imagine how that would feel, I’m kinda used to it now but as a foreigner...I’m so sorry.
Hi Palesa, fellow South African here. I'm actually going to be traveling to Seoul, South Korea in a couple of weeks to compete in the Mrs Universe pageant. Thank you for the honesty
Honestly, I'm so proud to be African!!! We are extremely diverse and yet we find a way to blend our cultures such that nothing seems weird to understand.
Your sawubona, unjani was spot on. Actually the Korean language has some similarities with Zulu, like you aaaygoooh (spelling?) is exactly the same as our hayboh! Both express dismay, shock, irritation, joy etc. Omana is like our wemana or awe mana (disbelief) I have noticed a number of words that have similar usage.

Not everyone gonna experience the same thing . Those people but holes .

Exactly!!
My sister's friend live in Canada and she told my sister a story about a yt girl at work who was crying and saying that she's scared of her African co-worker... For no reason at all.
Canada is much more intolerant then the US don't believe the media I have seen it with my own eyes. Canada has a long history of racism and mass murder when it comes to minorities it is a sickness that needs to be excised.

It also has a lot to do with their culture

there's so much discriminstion and bullying in South Korea. I have been here for almost 7 months now, and all I wanted was to make friends with some Koreans, even just 1 Korean friend would make me so happy, but I guess that is too much to ask for here and I just don't know what to do anymore :(
Your editing skills are outstanding, it’s a shame that most of your videos are so under appreciated
Thank you for representing us girl 🇿🇦❤️
I literally live around the corner from a venue with a “no foreigner” sign. It’s here and legal. The pandemic really brought out a lot of the discriminatory practices here and racial fears/biases.

Honestly, I'm so proud to be African!!! We are extremely diverse and yet we find a way to blend our cultures such that nothing seems weird to understand.
I love your channel and now seeing Palesa here makes me feel at home. Proudly South African🇿🇦.
From South Africa and love you girl for representing us ❤
Your sawubona, unjani was spot on.
Actually the Korean language has some similarities with Zulu, like you aaaygoooh (spelling?) is exactly the same as our hayboh! Both express dismay, shock, irritation, joy etc.
Omana is like our wemana or awe mana (disbelief)
I have noticed a number of words that have similar usage.
so many told me that i have south african accent when i've never been there even so hearing her accent is interesting. alright so i sound like her...
Where are you from if I may ask?
Wwwaaaahhhh joonkik is back !!! With new friend Palesa :D
