  • So the storm has passed, and had left us with cool winter nights and frosty mornings, which on the plus side gave us mild sunny days.. We had lots to do around the homestead, having only just managed to get unpacked before our power was cut. But none more important than the raising of our growing Boy, Scout.

What a beautiful peace of land you have and the birds are wonderful, just watching the wildlife should keep the baby happy. The house looks great after the scrubbing as you said not perfect but I think there is a certain charm about the rustic look. Thank you for the post. 🐦😀

I had been enjoying your gold mining videos until I discovered your homestead site. What a beautiful home you have found in the country. I can tell by your family'endeavors, you are on the right track. I live in Florida USA and the forests here resemble your local environment. That is why I started watching you. I enjoy observing different cultures . Keep up the good work.

Nice video. You two are making a wonderful place to call home. Rob the greatest adventure is one right at home. Watching your son grow and being a part of the growth. It's the best part of life. 32 years ago my wife brought a baby into our lives. We did our best and now he's a man with his own life and lady. It has been the greatest blessing I've ever experienced. Enjoy every second. I can't wait to see what more you and Erin build in the future. Thx for sharing.

A little trick we used was to keep a large barrel outside to fill with rainwater when it rains. Then during blackouts we would get buckets of water from it to use for flushing the toilet and to warm on the wood stove to have a wash. We also kept a large 10 litre container on the kitchen counter with water so we could make a cup of tea. 😊

Have a ton of kids. Kids are fun. Farms are awesome places for kids. Large families teach kids that it takes team work to run a house and a farm. Things that are missing in today's world. It enriches lives and communities. Love how you are teaching your son to explore and learn with supervision. Encouragement and love every step of the way. Looking forward to the next episode. You guys are young and forward thinkers realising the modern world is full of things that remove people from what is rich and meaningful in life's building a family and teaching your children how to survive in the pursuits of the basics of owning your own home and growing your own food free from chemicals.

I had chooks for years. Great manure mixed with hay for the garden. We bought a lovely shed and made it so good for the chooks. If I didn't shut them up over night they would fly into the feijoa trees and roost there. I don't think they get very cold. They are like birds with very fast metabolism. I shut them in as didn't want to hunt for the eggs. Lovely place you have and great progress.

Just stumbled across this video Rob, as I always watch your epic adventures in the wilderness. What a great storyline leading to your new adventure with the family, and I can only see success to your futures. You have actually helped change my life somewhat as I didn't realise how much I missed Tassie until I started watching your adventures. I moved to Queensland 24 years ago, but life changed when I lost my wife to cancer last year . The opportunity rose for me to move back, and I packed up and drove all the way five weeks ago. Yes, it's cold but the fresh air and scenery is second to none and I feel refreshed.

I approve of the stair philosophy. I remember nailing a few pieces of wood to a biggish wattle tree for a makeshift ladder to the bottom branch. It took years for my daughter to reach scary places. "Yes. that's very good. Could you please come down now you have me worried."

I can't believe how close the birds come up to you! The wild birds up our way are so wary/wild, they keep their distance! Great job cleaning off the lichen! Research Deep Litter Method for your chicken coup and see if that appeals to you. You don't have to clean it as often and, when you do, all of the stuff you shovel up goes straight into the compost bin (rather than a liquid stinky concoction). Well done getting Scout to exercise those climbing muscles. The joy your family is experiencing simply radiates, from all directions!

Dilute that liquid from the bin before putting on your plants. Try the easy to grow stuff like the silverbeet before adding to everything. You might find it full of Nitrogen. Add to your compost, clean out drum and start your own mix.

Another tip with lichen and mould on walls and veranda's. Wet them thoroughly before trying to water blast them , it "loosens" up the mould, lichen, or what eve is staining them, then water blast it clean. You probably worked this out while you were water blasting the veranda, but I thought I'd just leave this here to make things easier just in case...!! I love the area where you've bought, not the suburb, the locality, it looks amazing, love the wildlife and tranquillity of the place... You've done well...! PS, a million bonus points for the guitar and the "risk assessment" with the little fella....👍

Thanks for sharing the joy, Rob, Erin and little Scout! It's so enjoyable seeing the excitement and fun you derive from achieving the necessary, and in the evolving homestead, and charmed to the eyebrows the multitude delights you and Erin have shared of the family.
Looking forward to seeing more of the gardens and grounds, and environs, the local creek is at the boundary you say? Any finds of history, by ground archaeology, chook shed stash, roof insulation newspapers and magazines? Although it seems a seventies or eighties open plan design, the lichen-covered angular cladding, the bones may be older, I don't know, but know you'd share whatever may be interesting you come by. May you all be safe and continued happiness and sharing in the journey.
Cheers from Gabi of Narre Warren, Vic.

To get rid of the lichen moss or any mould fungal matter ect use a product called "Wet & Forget" spray it on with a pump up garden sprayer and like the name suggests you forget it. I use it on clients roofs, paths and all sorts. it kills the spores and stops it from coming back or I should say takes fives times longer to come back than any other product of used.
It is not an instant visual difference and if just left can take a few months before all the moss has fallen off but after its been on for a few days you can speed up the process and hit it with the pressure washer or even just the hose, the best thing is because everything has died it wont come back like it will with just a pressure wash alone . you can use it on the deck, brickworks, sandstone ect .
Not sure who stocks it in Tassie but you could get it delivered I recon google Wet & Forget

    • @miszced
      @miszced 7 місяців тому

"Wet & Forget" is great product but expensive. We get it in concentrate form, usually mix 5:1 (5 parts H2O). Can last up to some 6 months after application. Rain water reactivate the enzymes. Great on green slippery Alge walkways. We use it once every 6 months on the concrete drive way & walkways here in tropical Florida.
