You are speaking the truth 100%. I got into gospel bass when I learned bass and returned to the church in the early part of this year. I drummed to these songs before, but now I had to listen to the music a bit differently now. I had a nice ear for music, and being musically inclined helped. I pretty much learned a LOT of the things you're talking about by just playing whatever songs they told me to play. 😂😂😂😂😂 For the gospel quartet examples, my mind went STRAIGHT back to Power by the one bishop guy (I forgot his name). 😂😂😂😂😂 And I was like, "Yep. You definitely gotta know how to drive a song, and that's exactly how. Riding the 1 is your best friend." Thanks for the lesson!
You definitely need to make this a series, I'll be waiting for how to drive on CCM, hillsong/elevation kind of music, African gospel music and in 6/8 and 3/4 time signatures as well 🙏🏽
Been playing bass for 0ver 45 years with a small break now and then! I have always wanted to learn the feel and playability of southern gospel! Just this short lesson explains a lot to me! As soon as I get the money I will be ordering this lesson from your site! I am a self taught bass player and I know I have some bad habits and also wrong habits! But I’ve been trying to correct these. I am the bassist for our church and would really like to stir the “settled” souls in church and to get them moving for the Lord again! I’ve played modern blues and country rock just about all my life, not much in the walking bass style! Hopefully not too old to teach an old dog new tricks! Thanks again, Brothers in Christ!
Ive been playing bass since January, 2023, I am excessively obsessed with gospel bass, I am so glad I follow you and subscribed to your videos! I love your helpful videos! If anyone teaches, please let me know. I really want to perfect the craft!
i came up playing quartet also .here in Bahamas . listening to Groups like Keynotes and Jackson Southerners . this will enhance what i do..thank for helping. waiting for part 2
Jermaine I just came across this video. I just got started playing bass again and I now play with my church worship team. I am so very grateful to you for these lessons and for helping me grow. Your method of teaching is great. Thanks very much.
Thx. Jermaine I understand the concept I'm sharing w musicians, not to give up ething at once and u won't have much to give later in the middle to the end. I'm seeing where I need more development of skills to execute what u r saying. I've watched u grow Jermaine, God bless U my bro n Christ.
Jermaine, I love your videos, especially this one, because I was a part of a contemporary gospel quartet group. Our group came to Louin, Mississippi, and we had a great time playing with some of the home groups. I need some more instructions since I hadn't played in a while.
Love this information. Thank you so much. I just play the smaller Church - 200-300 per service, 3 services. We rotate so I play 1-2x per month. Had a drummer tell me I need to do walk ups and walk downs. I originally took it as a criticism but have accepted that I need to get out of that pocket. lol. Awesome video
You also have to know when to use those low notes. Sometimes it drives better playing the middle c up the neck. Sounds more warm, round and “bouncy”. Don’t over use the 5th string just because you have it
@@ballin565 For sure. Unless youre already super professional and disciplined, I feel like for most average/semi pro players, a 5 string actually hinders their playing and and overall progress as a bass player
@@ballin565that’s why I recommend starting off with a 4 string it forces you to use the higher register of the bass and gets you more comfortable in that range so when you get a 5 you can even things out in your sound.
I like your content. I am a beginner female bassist and I've been pulled to play for different services due to my progression. I would love more drive vids. My church is HEAVY on quartet and I'm a quarter lover myself and want be coldblooded on the bass . I'm learning how to endure long songs and staying clean during the process. Thanks for the advice about slowing down and practicing! My chief musican says the same thing to me.
Dude! You were born to do this! (If I may Quote the Great KRS-1), 'Teachers teach and do the world good' ... 😆 the amount of knowledge and insight you provide is incredible and the fact that it's FREE 😮 Wow Dude, You Rock Bro', Thank You, Much Appreciated. Happy Holidays to you and the Family. 👊🏾
Bass guitar amplification is essential for proper sound. I have been a female bass guitar player for over 60 years. In my situation, I need a compact, lightweight system and have using Gallien Krueger (GK) for the past 35 plus years. They design and manufacture their amps, speaker boxes, covers etc in Stockton, California. I use a 500 watt Fusion amplifier with a 12” GK NEO speaker. I also use a 200 watt GK amp for church. The amp weighs five pounds and produces a powerful punch. Look them up online…last but not least, my guitar of choice is a Fender Elite series 5 string Jazz Bass guitar. The church I play in recently upgraded their sound system and now I can patch the bass through the soundboard, huge improvement in the sound. I also play with a Country/ Irish/ Folk group almost every Sunday afternoon, weather permitting…almost forgot to mention that I play by ear, can’t read music…
Thank you for the lesson Jermaine. I love everyone of your videos. What are the tracks you are playing on. Where can I put my hands on it ? I would be so cool to have in order to work on my drive. You da best. One love ❤

Higher register is definitely is not used enough in drives when bass players have low B

4 or 5 string bass for beginners learning to play bass guitar for gospel music?
Either one will work. Realistically the 5 string would probably be more useful because of the versatility
