It makes sense to me why job applications have such long forms now - annoying that they usually still ask for your CV too, like bro I just entered all of the information separately
It's largely based on research (Danielle Gaucher, Justin Friesen, and Aaron C. Kay (2011), Evidence That Gendered Wording in Job Advertisements Exists and Sustains Gender Inequality (Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, July 2011, Vol 101(1), p109-28).), but I think it's perhaps more of a guide - something to make you think. I can see why 'kill/killer' is seen as more of a male think - these are generalisations.
Some jobs require masculine tendencies, whereas others require feminine tendencies. Using gender neutral culture where it's not wanted makes you less competitive. A female boxer is unlikely to be interested in nurturing and in fact wants to dominate her opponent, the same way a male boxer would. On diversity....building a tribe of like minded people is the key to having a cohesive team. There exists a "diversity" tribe who identifies as all inclusive and gender neutral, and that's fine but there are also other tribes that exist and will continue to. The tribe you have is dependant on the market you operate in, not on the offense an outsider has because your tribe doesn't include people like them. I have 3 business that exhibit 3 different cultures. 1 is diverse / all inclusive, the other is UK male dominant and the 3rd is all Eastern European (Polish) women. Introducing an English male into my female dominated business would disrupt productivity as they all converse in Polish. Even if he spoke Polish, he would still be considered an outsider by the other staff. It's not my job (or right) to change the perceptions or thought processes of that tribe. It is my job to ensure productivity is high so that wages can also be high. Having a cohesive team is the key to low stress and high productivity.
Thank you for your comments. I'm not sure you placed them under the right video. They seem to refer more to the content in our Diversity and Inclusion video ua-cam.com/video/LqP6iU3g2eE/v-deo.html This one is about unconscious bias.
I guess the "Today" part of the title is supposed to imply that this is the latest thinking on the subject. Here's a thought: it was a scam yesterday, and nothing's changed.
You'd really need to say why you think something that's said in the video is a scam. If your idea is that it's a scam because of something outside the video, then we wouldn't be able to respond.
@@whatyouneedtoknow If it's unconscious, you don't know about it, and thus can't do anything about it. If it's conscious, then you can, but you may not want to. For instance, I know I'm biased against high crime neighborhoods. That may have a negative effect on who lives there (say, because I won't shop there), but I will retain that bias because I would like to go on living. A Liberal will try to convince me that I'm bad because I'm biased. I say the Liberal is bad because he's willing to put me in danger to promote his ideology.
Choosing not to shop in a dangerous area is not about bias. One of the main points about unconscious bias is that we are not aware of them, but that doesn't mean there aren't things that can't be done to avoid poor decisions based on biases. There are examples in the video.
@@whatyouneedtoknow Every decision we make has bias, because we can never have ALL the facts before we make a decision. What comprises a "poor decision" based on biases seems the real issue here. If your purpose in this video is to correct the thinking of people who would generally be described as "conservative", then YOUR bias is clear.
I don't think the video says anything about 'correcting the way people think' and there's no mention of it. The purpose of the video is to explain what UB is, how it affects the way we think and therefore decisions to make, the suggest ways you can go about reducing bias - by making the invisible visible - and hopefully making better - not perfect - but better decisions because you have more information.
Unconscious cannot be proved is simplistic and often inaccurate, this assumes too much with obvious bias itself. Very handy if you want to SOUND convincing??? We all make very subtle decisions in life many of which are very good however this method is incredibly cherry picked and only applies it's half logic when it fits the narrative. Think!!!

@@whatyouneedtoknow Well, I wasn't wanting a reply unless you think I unconsciously did, dunno, maybe consciously you thought I did. Your claim to unconscious biases is no different to saying prove ghosts don't exist and if you can't then they probably do. How do you argue against a theory that somebody was unaware of a thought that they didn't know they had especially when a discriminative reason is suggested as a possible cause, ie damned if you do, damned if you don't. In my opinion this nonsense is just novel way of pseudo intellectuals trying to convince normal people that they aren't as smart as them and that their student debts were worth it.

The best video I have seen on biases so far.
Thanks Nick. Glad you liked it.

At 4:15 btw, who decides which words are gender coded? I wouldn't have necessarily thought 'killer app' had male connotations

A really informative video. Seems well researched, not too short and covers the topic well.
Great video! Such a clear and concise message. And the voice over is so easy to listen to! Well done.
Thanks so much!
SHOULD HAVE BEEN CALLED SUBCONSCIOUS BIAS. UNCONSCIOUS BIAS IS SO MISLEADING IN EVERY SENSE!!
Thank you for your comment. It would seem to make sense, but the subconscious part of the brain deals with different things.
Assume the worse in yourself and others. Seems like progress.

From what you've said it sounds like you haven't actually watched the video. Is that correct?
