GMTV and Diggit clips (c.March 1998)

  • There's a new show starting on GMTV, and presenters Mr Motivator, Cara, and Craig are on a mission to find out more. This is obviously in the lead-up to the launch of Diggit (or, later, DiGGiT or something), and then I've edited on some short clips from a little bit later on the same tape which may actually be from the very first episode. Presumably all March 1998.
There are plenty of promos and ads to get your teeth into as we go around the likes of Power Rangers and Timon and Pumbaa. They seem to be going big on Extreme Ghostbusters, and even bigger on Barbie and her little sister (apparently) Shelly. Nice to see yo-yos getting some paid screen time in the late 90s, too.
As for the presenters, no doubt you'll recognise Fearne Cotton, but who's that with her? It's Paul "Des" Ballard. And what's Paul doing these days? About 19 years, as a matter of fact. Probably better you don't look him up.
Many thanks to David for sending me this tape.
(If you're a copyright holder and have any objections, please feel free to contact me. Alternatively, I haven't monetised the video, so you're welcome to do so, and that way everybody wins.)

Just found out this evening what's happened to Des... ouch, what the hell went wrong there?
So dissilusioning when you find out people you grew up watching on TV turned out like that.

Thanks for uploading this little bit of history. I didn't know they carried on showing Road Hog on Sunday's after Diggit launched, having looked it up it continued for another month before Diggit started being shown on Sunday's aswell. Guess they had already filmed material to burn through as both were hosted by Des.
As for yo-yos, they became a MASSIVE trend again in the late 90s with the addition of flashy lights, ball bearings and cool tricks. So much so that Recess even did an episode of it that same year, addressing the advent of yo-yo competitions. I wonder if this was the premiere of Recess, i remember that ad with all the voices like yesterday.
And nice to see Ellie Beaven in the studio briefly. I remember her from The Wild House on CBBC at the time.

@@David315842 Oh god yeah. I hated when i woke up before 8 on a Sunday and had to endure the boring Sunday Programme, waiting on Diggit coming on. Nothing on the other 4 channels either.

@@HalfbrickVHS It would have been similar stuff on BBC1, BBC2 may have had some CBBC on leaning toward a children's magazine programme of some kind sometimes. T4 would have been on Channel 4, which had a mixture of children and teen programmes and if you could get it Channel 5 had Milkshake on before going into other programming later in the morning. At least that's what I think was going on at the time.

I have this on tape also. This was the end of an era as Motivator and the gang were gradually phased out of the weekend strands, witrh Power Rangers moving on to CITV, not that it was quite the end though, as Motivator still hosted the school holiday blocks, I recall always holding a bit of a grudge against Diggit for 'disrupting' my Saturday morning rituals at the time, even though I enjoyed Recess and Pepper Ann, and didn't really watch it after the earliest months of 1999 as by that point we'd gotten Sky.

On the plus side: GMTV once aired an episode of Lightspeed Rescue that did NOT air on Fox Kids OR Jetix!

WOW Cara sounded a LOT like Lucy Longhurst to me, DARN my miss-remembering brain! :D (Whacks my head with a Pinky Punky plush as it's Wackaday today LOL) Mattel sure got their money's worth from ITV and so did Toy Options back in the day that handled the British distribution of Trendmasters and Galoob toys before Hasbro brought out Galoob and Trendsmasters by Jakks Pacific. Had the same guy doing the voices for all the ads too. Ah Extreme Ghostbusters, Sony's attempt at reviving the series for the 90's to I assume mixed results. :D Speaking of extreme; 'Extreme Dinosaurs' Mattel's spin off of Street Sharks, that too did fairy well as far as I remember. :) Yep this would be around March 1998 around the time GMTV ended airing Power Rangers and just before they started airing their new weekend co-Disney block Diggit for Saturdays AND Sundays which at the time was impressive. :) After reading up on 'Des' it's a pity that he didn't take April 'Miss Finster' Winchell's advice and just shut up while he did! Just awful. :( At least Fearne has gone unto having a good career on TV. Thanks again. :)

I'm not sure who that Cara is (I think I've got her name right, anyway). Still, I love the hi-tech laptop hacking going on around 20 seconds in.
Thanks for the extra info on the Extreme Dinosaurs - I don't really have any memory of that line of toys, but I enjoyed that ad. Same goes for Toy Options. There's a lot packed into this short video, so thanks very much as always!

@@VideotapeFTW Well Craig gave out his real name, so I can't imagine Cara doing the same, the only one who would go by a different name would be Derek 'Mr. Motivator' Evans, because he's just more well known by that name. :D Toy Options I believe would late become Character Toys and producing British brands of toys like Doctor Who and Peppa Pig. What's funny is that the animated series for Extreme Dinosaurs had 13 more episodes made compared to Street Sharks which only had 40 and some of them was introducing the Extreme Dinosaurs as the 'Dino Vengers", I guess the dinos may have sold a little better perhaps? Extreme Ghostbusyers though did have a reunion two parter with three of the 80's Real Ghostnusters, as Egon was all ready a part of the 'Extreme' team in the show and as seen in the advert had a figure made of him. But not of wheelchair bound ghostbuster; Garrett Miller, I'll bet Trendmasters got some flack from disability groups for that one. :D You're welcome. :)

@@David315842 Interesting. I think this was the era when, so often, the toys were designed first and then the programmes were built around that. One big marketing exercise where the goal is to sell merchandise rather than any sort of artistic vision. Then again, as long as the shows were good, we didn't really notice or care, did we? Funny how obvious it is when you look back.

    • @David315842
      @David315842 Рік тому

@@VideotapeFTW That is most likely true. :) Both shows were made by DiC (AKA Tim Vincent's favourite animation company LOL) and Mattel must have had that whole thing planned during Street Shark's production. The Extreme Dinosaurs show though takes place in it's own timeline and makes no reference to Street Sharks. So much for having a combined brand, but this from the company (Mattel) that gives it's IP's away like giving sweets to a bunch of kids. :D But yeah it's mostly come up with toys, have some writers develop some character traits, history etc. for a Saturday morning and/or syndicated show to use as 22 minute toy ads and there you go. :)
