Ibanez built "The Hydra" for Steve Vai. Five years in development the Hydra's single body is home to a 12-string guitar with a part fretted, part fretless neck, a seven-string guitar with whammy bar and coil tap and a four-string short-scale bass guitar featuring a funky headless neck that's unfretted along the whole of the upper part and fretted below. Oh, and there's also 13-string sympathetic harp at the back. All of the buttons/switches on the guitar are operational. It's held up by a belt strap due to its weight. Next to do - Tender Surrender Live and For the Love of God, a "regular" guitar for those songs. FYI - Steve's last name pronounce Vi like sky.
The Hydra: 1st neck - 12 string, half fretted neck (guitar) 2nd neck - 7 string, full fretted (guitar) 3rd neck - 4 string, half fretted...but in a twisted way... (bass) 4th neck (kinda)- 13 string, no frets (harp) That beast (weights A LOT) was tamed by Mr. Steve Vai! Mr. Steve Vai has been chosen for this task, because of his previous experience with similar beasts with more than 2 necks (e.g. ua-cam.com/video/jY8wyKuLY2k/v-deo.htmlsi=ldaEhaOjIWzKUl4l) - personal favored spot @ 08:55 - and although in that example he had the help of, Billy Sheehan on bass, Tony MacAlpine on guitar and keyboards, Jeremy Colson on drums and Dave Weiner on 7-string guitar (all well known as experienced beast tamers), he performed the legendary "Reverse Riker maneuver" (while in taming process) and for that reason, he received the Master Tamer title, which remains nowadays...🖖 Seriously people, Steve Vai 's most incredible creation is the "Steve Vai Project - Sex & Religion" - Vocals: Devin Townsend - Guitars, Composer, Lyricist: S. Vai - Bass, Vocal: T.M. Stevens a.k.a. Shaka Zulu - Drums, Percussion: Terry Bozzio....listen to this INCREDIBLE album🖖
Steve Vai [ V. EYE} also did some great recent collaborations, one of the greatest video's of 2022 POLYPHIA EGO DEATH feat STEVE VAI , with millions of views on UA-cam. Steve also did a cameo guitar solo with an unbelievable Swedish singer called JONAH NILSSON in a video called Jonah Nilsson diamond ring, the video also has a short cameo from Jonah Nilsson's mentor/ manager the old man of funk Mr QUINCY JONES doing some unusual moves, JONAH NILSSON has Stevie wonder/ Michael Jackson style vocals, Jonah is the singer/keyboard player from the Swedish rock funk jazz fusion trio DIRTY LOOPS, I call their music 'Happy feel good music'. they always perform with a smile on their faces. The other 2 members are one of today's great bass players HENRIK LINDER, and AARON MELLERGARD on drums, they are all classically trained. You've got to start your reaction video's with dirty loops fans favourite [ the studio video's not the live ones]. WORK SHIT OUT, a great all-round performance, you will notice all their video's end suddenly, at the end of work shirt out you've got to watch the funny credits, other studio video's to watch ROCK YOU, WORLD ON FIRE, the 8 minute classic that will take you all the way to church and back with some gospel vocal vibes NEXT TO YOU, same again great bass and drums from HENRIK and AARON. HIT ME!, then great vocals from Jonah the beautiful ballad BREAKDOWN. Speaking of collaborations DIRTY LOOPS did a great studio session with guitar player CORY WONG and his musicians, the video's look like they were shot on one stage, they were recorded in 2 different countries, the DIRTY LOOPS trio recorded their part in Stockholm Sweden, CORY WONG and his horn section recorded their part in Minneapolis.'( The horn section used to be the backing musicians for the late PRINCE.). They recorded an unbelievable version of Michael Jacksons THRILLER, great vocals from Jonah Nilsson, another great song with a HENRIK LINDER bass foot pedal solo and watch the face of sax player Grace Chung Kelly [ who also has a great singing voice] FOLLOW THE LIGHT, and a few song to get you going the amazing instrumental TURBO with great sax playing. 2 more instrumentals with funny names SONGS FOR LOVERS COFFEE BREAK IS OVER, and a duet with just bass and drums Henrik and Aaron SONGS FOR LOVERS OLD ARMANDO HAD A FARM same again great funny credits at the end of OLD ARMANDO. there are cow's pigs sheep ect. Once you've done one dirty loops video you've got to watch another and another, happy feel good music. I nearly forgot, JONAH NILSSON sang Michael Jacksons BILLY JEAN live in Paris for his mentor QUINCY JONES who was sitting on the side of the stage in this video, he was welcoming the guest artists to the stage, the 2 bass players were from back in the Michael Jackson days RICHARD BONA and MARCUS MILLER. Best wishes from the rainy north east coast of England , enjoy the rabbit hole.
It’s actually four instruments. I believe it’s a 12 string guitar with a half fretted neck on top, seven string guitar in the middle and the bass guitar at the bottom. The fourth is the harp at the back of his guitar that he keeps flicking and hitting with his hand. The guy is a master. To train your mind and your hands to play for different instruments at the same time while making a completely awesome song is quite amazing. Fun reaction 👏👏👏👏🤙🤙🤙🤙
More Steve Vai especially STEVE VAI INCREDIBLE GUITAR PERFORMANCE HD video live from the crossroads guitar festival. And also DIRTY LOOPS especially the studio video for WORK SHIT OUT, and read the funny credits at the end of the video, Happy feel good music, once you've watched 1 dirty loops video you've got to watch another and another. Don't forget about the other suggestions from my earlier comments. Best wishes from the still wet and windy north east coast of England.
Steve vai was voted one of the top 10 greatest guitar players of all time. Steve also appeared in a movie from 1986 crossroads in the EPIC GUITAR BATTLE SCENE a guitar duel with RALPH MACCIO remember the karate kid!. Good verses evil who will win Ralph or the devil's champ steve, another great performance to watch STEVE VAI NOW WE RUN, steve playing with 2 violinists and a great drumming performance from long time drummer JEREMY COLSON, it's not the biggest kit in the world but he can certainly play it. Once again best wishes for me.
steve vai is just incredible. You should check out Tender Surrender and For the Love of God with his regular guitar. He does one called I know you are here with a triple neck guitar as well.
That would have been my recommendations too :-) And when you want to see him in a band, try David Lee Roth's "Just Like Paradise" or Whitesnake' "Fool For Your Loving" (the 1990 version).
This guy is one of the few men in history who has been considered the God of the guitar, and for good reason. Beyond his versatility, a guy who built that monstrosity of a stringed instrument is definitely a one of a kind. He, like Thor's hammer, only he is worthy of touching that thing that when you see it makes you think of a mythological object, I feel that Steve had to cross seas, climb mountains, go through enchanted forests and destroy monsters and dragons to reach that holy grail..
If you want to react to steve vai in action, you've got to watch STEVE VAI INCREDIBLE GUITAR PERFORMANCE HD video, live from the crossroads guitar festival with some unusual guitar playing in the middle section of the instrumental, great duelling with guitar / keyboard player TONY MACALPINE. Best wishes from the North east coast of England.
Steve Vai always surprises with his creations, he has a song called "Knappsack" where he plays only with his left hand since he underwent surgery for his tendons, he had a bad posture and hurt his hand, unfortunately it is something chronic , and he lives with that, so every day he wears a sling, I had the pleasure of meeting him in person on June 15, he is an incredible person and a very good guitarist, he has been my musical influence for 10 years
Steve is an absolute legend. He’s played with Frank Zappa, David Lee Roth, as well as Whitesnake. He’s best known for his solo work, though. Check out the songs For the Love of God, Tender Surrender, or Bad Horsie.
Steve is a great rabbit-hole. Some of my favorites are from his DVD From Where The Wild Things Are and include All About Eve, Firewall (w/band intros) and his work in the David Lee Roth band, Yankee Rose to be exact and his solo album Sex and Religion. Hope y'all dive into more Vai.
He played with David Lee Roth after Roth left Van Halen, he was in a movie Crossroads with Ralp Macchio, short git in Whitesnake, started in Frank Zappa, replaced Yngwie Malmsteen in Alcatraz.
Awesome, amazing guitarist . Next check out Joe Satriani . So glad your on to these axe masters . 🤘🏼🤘🏼👍🏼 Yes this thing he created . A 12 string on top, half fretless. 7 string in middle. bottom a bass with top half fretless. and a harp off the tail piece. Yes he plays all at the same time. Truly insane
Steve Vai Is One of many italian american artist , related to It's country Origin . In 2012 Vai in North Italy Region Origin of Vai A Dorno ( Pavia) , honorary citizenship whit Wife ( Pia Maiocco) and 2 sons . Having known Your italian parents. Born in Carle Place (NY) in 6 June 1960.
Steve Vai is an absolute beast on the guitar. Taught for 3 years by another great guitarist.....Joe Satriani...who also gave lessons to Kirk Hammett from metallica and Larry LaLonde who plays in Primus and formerly played in an old school thrash band called possessed.
Its Steve vy like in why Thanks to whoever requested this 1 of the best guitarists of all time. Another song to checkout is Tender Surrender where he literally makes his guitar have an orgasam He is famous for his collection of custom made guitars and theres a great video explaining this one. Its actually 4 instruments the top being a 12 sting the middle a 7 string aand the bottom the bass If you watch carefully you will also notice a little harp behind the pickups Also we need to get you to react with him playing in Frank Zappas band There is no one like Zappa and we need to go there
The Master....I always go to see him live when he tours the UK. Check out Knappsack. He plays the guitar one handed, he had a shoulder op so recorded the track playing with one hand. 🎸🎸🎸🎸
Steve Vai Legendary Guitarist Steve played guitar for David Lee Roth after Roth was fired by Van Halen. Also Steve has a great Video playing Guitar with Female Guitarist Orianthi 🎸🔥🎸🔥😊
I believe his last name is pronounced Vai with an i sound not an a sound. When David Lee Roth (of Van Halen) went solo, Steve was his guitarist for a while. There are some great songs on David's album Eat 'em and smile. Yankee Rose is probably the most famous one. (This is a not-so-subtle hint to react to Yankee Rose.) Steve was also in a movie with Ralph Maccio (Yes, the Karate Kid) called Crossroads in where he (Steve Vai) plays the devil and he and Ralph have a guitar face off at one point. Great reaction as always.
Steve Vai wasn't the Devil. He played Jack Butler, working for the Devil to help him collect souls through cutting heads. Not a great movie, but such a great scene. Ry Cooder's guitar work in that film is also amazing.
Steve's major commercial attention came when he was the guitar player for David Lee Roth after he left Van Halen. He smashed into the hard rock/rock scene then and has played in major bands such as Whitesnake (post DLR), Alcatraz (PRE DLR), Frank Zappa (his real breakout start also pre DLR) and has even popped up on Ozzy Osbourne songs. He also did the guitar work for John Lydon's (Johnny Rotten) post Sex Pistols group PIL Public Image Limited first release Cassette or CD. Those were the actual names based on the format. Also, he's featured as the villain in the movie Crossroads starring Ralph Maccio. Amazing guitarist and musician and a must see live performer no doubt.
Ya know there's cool, then there's Teeth of the Hydra cool! Check out Steve Vai and his time with David Lee Roth from the mid 80's, he did a lot of epic stuff with Diamond Dave.
That is a custom made Steve Vai signature guitar that only he plays.Of course copy of that model maybe available for purchase, but to play it is a whole another level.Did you guys also know that it has extra fine strings on the side too ,which he plays in the song, that are not in line with the 3 frets already visible? 😁.Yeah, he played that all along. If you see his right hand(the plucking hand and not his left fretting hand) you will see he strums those strings in the side (guitar body acctually) . To be able to simply play this instrument is a whole another level, beyond interpretation .its just complete madness. The middle one is also most probably 8 string/7, which is not a normal standard 6 string guitar. Look at the crazy half frets too . Its a monster.🤷🏻♂️ 😅😅😅😅
Really cool to see people discover real guitar players like Steve Vai for the first time! His signature song is For The Love of God…watch a live version. Live he is astonishing. Also watch guys like Eric Johnson, John Petrucci, Michael Angelo Batio, Paul Gilbert…these are “the guitar players’ guitar players”, lol
Check out the CROSSROADS GUITAR DUEL a popular 80s movie with the karate kid playing guitar or cutting heads" against the devil to win back a lost soul that was sold for fortune and fame. Steve Vai and Ry Cooter provided the music for the film, including the duel.
Guitarist videos you must check: John 5 - Black Widow of La Porte live: ua-cam.com/video/KjQ0U8Uk5Hg/v-deo.html Tommy Emmanuel - Classical Gas live: ua-cam.com/video/S33tWZqXhnk/v-deo.html
Check out anything from his Live in Minneapolis concert. I would recommend building the church or for the love of god, tender surrender, actually anything from that concert is an amazing experience.
...Steve Vai long "i"..as in "lie"...Also check out Joe Satriani, Steve's teacher...I suggest 'Satch Boogie" or "Big Bad Moon", great show guys, love your channel
Ppl will tell you to listen to live "Tender Surrender" and live "For the love of God". We discussed live before studio already. Tsk tsk tsk "Tender Surrender" has become internet/reactor popular, but his most famous work is "For the Love of God". The passion and skill on this song will blow you away. (Studio, of course) Steve Vai info... He started with Frank Zappa. Joined a band called Alcatraz. Famously joined with David Lee Roth (from Van Halen) and then filled in with Whitesnake. He made solo instrumental albums all throughout his career.
Tender Surrender and For the Love of God are two must see live videos. Tender Surrender video, I'm surprised the guitar doesn't have a cigarette after the tune. For the Love God, he arranged for orchestra, after originally done without the orchestra. Joe Satriani is another great guitarist who gave Steve lessons. Also a great guitarist in a more heavy traditional roll is Gary Hoey who was really liked by surfers in CA. His music has the kind of movement a GoPro on surfboard or mountain bike has.
V long I . He was Frank Zappa's guitar player. He Also played for David Lee Roth band. So many Solo things, since the 80s Design Ibanez guitars and sponsored. By. Try (For the love of God) next.
You need to (if you haven't already) review some other phenominal Steve Vai music, like Whispering A Prayer, Tender Surrender, For The Love Of God, Blue Powder .. you will be blown away!
Now, if you want to do some more 80's guitar player reactions, you should look up Jason Becker, who incidentally replaced Vai when he left DLR. As well I'd suggest Tony MacAlpine, Vito Bratta, and of course Yngwie Malmstein (who Steve replaced in Alcatraz)
Well, i would actually recommend "Whispering a prayer" live. Or "Blue powder". Or "Junkie". Or "The blood and tears". Or "Touching tongues"........and the list goes on.
I was able to see him play that Hydra live last Nov 2022 in St Louis when he came. It was very cool!! Another song you may want to watch/listen to is Tender Surrender. But you gotta do the live version: ua-cam.com/video/Yw74sDWPH7U/v-deo.html And, as others have said, his last name is pronounced with an 'I' that sounds like: V + I. Not Vey.
Steve Vai..(Sounds like "EYE", Not "Day".) And, 4 instruments. You missed the harp. Brian May (Queen) calls him the master of the space age guitar. Check out For the love of God, and "Tender Surrender". 😉
4:41 Its actually 4. If you look behind the bridge you'll see strings there. Steve Vai is definitely the best. Many can play fast like Malmsteen, Li - Or play as technical as Romeo, Pettruchi, Satriani, Mcalpine. But none of them is as good as Vai in terms of mastery. Its like the guy was born with guitar already in his hands. So..... gooooooooooooooooooooooddddddd.........
Steve started with Frank Zappa and has been one of those absolute guitar Gods! I LOVE his song “The Audience is Listening” and the guest appearance with Polyphia - Ego Death which is a must see! Also his stint with the David Lee Roth band with “Yankee Rose” is awesome. He also played a guy who sold his soul to play and has a guitar battle in hell in the Movie “Criss Roads” with Ralph Macchio (Karate Kid). He plays all the guitar parts in the movie and so battles himself kinda of!
great reaction guys. if like guitars that talk to you... i would highly recommend joe satrarini whom also trained steve vai "always with me, always with you" here: ua-cam.com/video/VI57QHL6ge0/v-deo.html and eric johnson is another good one "cliffs of dover: ua-cam.com/video/5Nd7EZ3k39s/v-deo.html 😎
IF you wanna see him in a more commercial setting, do Yankee Rose ua-cam.com/video/Aae2uyXLnd8/v-deo.html by x-VanHalen front man David Lee Roth where he makes the guitar sound like it's talking, or him as Jack Butler, ua-cam.com/video/tdeZXCYtzeE/v-deo.html the devils guitarist in the move Crossroads.
If you really like top end guitarist, check out Matteo Mancuso. Steve Vai, ( the dude you just reacted to) has suggested Matteo is the next level. Check him out.
Yes, it’s neat, but he does a much better job just with a single guitar. Yes, the shows his dexterity and flexibility, and being able to play three different instruments almost simultaneously, however, just watch them with a natural electric guitar and be amazed.
Next to do - Tender Surrender Live and For the Love of God, a "regular" guitar for those songs. FYI - Steve's last name pronounce Vi like sky.
Thank You for the info, been a fan since mid 80's.
The hydra is currently used on a stand.
yeah man, steve is a god in his own world, i love him!
FYI - His last name is pronounced "VY".
When I saw this on your site here I thought, oh oh.... they don't know what they are about to watch🤣
The Hydra:
1st neck - 12 string, half fretted neck (guitar)
2nd neck - 7 string, full fretted (guitar)
3rd neck - 4 string, half fretted...but in a twisted way... (bass)
4th neck (kinda)- 13 string, no frets (harp)

Oh ya I think you pretty much nailed that. So all I have to add is….. MIC DROPPED!!
Theres a great video on the guitar alone
i watched him play the Hydra live in Budapest, it was crazy.
When Steve was still in school studying music musicians would send him sheet music to proof. He's a musical genius.
Not just any musicians. He was working for Frank Zappa.

I'd add Erotic Nightmares (or anything, for that matter; Sisters?) from Passion and Warfare.
His usual guitar is a 7 string guitar that was designed by him and built by Ibanez

To be able to simply play this instrument is a whole another level, beyond interpretation .its just complete madness.
The middle one is also most probably 8 string/7, which is not a normal standard 6 string guitar.
Look at the crazy half frets too .
Its a monster.🤷🏻♂️
😅😅😅😅
Now you're ready for Polyphia - Ego Death with Steve Vai! BTW it's Vai as in fly. I saw him play this song live--amazing!
I had the privilege of meeting him at a club after a show on his Sex And Religion tour, very nice guy, signed my copy of "Flexable" for me.
The music from the future in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure was from Steve Vai.
Steve Vai (Vai = Vi, sounds like Hi, cry, try. )
Check out the CROSSROADS GUITAR DUEL a popular 80s movie with the karate kid playing guitar or cutting heads" against the devil to win back a lost soul that was sold for fortune and fame. Steve Vai and Ry Cooter provided the music for the film, including the duel.

Here's some fun Steve Vai's tracks with a lot of electric guitar wizardry: Juice, Bad horsie, Die to live, The audience is listening.
You should watch the Steve Vai Documentary. He talks a bit on that guitar.
Ppl will tell you to listen to live "Tender Surrender" and live "For the love of God". We discussed live before studio already. Tsk tsk tsk
"Tender Surrender" has become internet/reactor popular, but his most famous work is "For the Love of God". The passion and skill on this song will blow you away. (Studio, of course)
Steve Vai info...
You should check out "Tender Surrender" also Steve Vai
Check out Now We Run by Steve Vai....The whole band are incredible
You have to do Tender Surrender next, it's a Steve Vai MUST ...also Now We Run (live) and Building the Church
His music was used in a lot of movies and other bands used his talents in a lot of their songs
He played with Frank Zappa for a couple years when he was 20.
Top 3 best guitarist of all time! Check out his video he did with polyphia thats really popular called “ego death”
Checkout Steve Vai playing Knappsack....One handed guitar playing
V long I . He was Frank Zappa's guitar player. He Also played for David Lee Roth band. So many Solo things, since the 80s
Design Ibanez guitars and sponsored.
Wow stunning never seen the like cool ❤❤
Well, i would actually recommend "Whispering a prayer" live. Or "Blue powder". Or "Junkie". Or "The blood and tears". Or "Touching tongues"........and the list goes on.
Your faces says it all:
WTF.
👍👍👍🇸🇪😎💕
💯 😂
He did Steve lukather the guitar player for Toto he's an animal man so we're all the other guys you were saying I just thought I'd throw that
I was able to see him play that Hydra live last Nov 2022 in St Louis when he came. It was very cool!! Another song you may want to watch/listen to is Tender Surrender. But you gotta do the live version: ua-cam.com/video/Yw74sDWPH7U/v-deo.html
And, as others have said, his last name is pronounced with an 'I' that sounds like: V + I. Not Vey.
I also mentioned Tender Surrender you dont need any words with that 1
One man-band
Check Out Michael Angelo Batio Too! He Can Play A Guitar Which Hand At The Same Time
tender surrender urgent , tecnic and soul in the same spot
He played with Frank Zappa, you should check some of his work out.
Hydra a multi headed mythical snake with anywhere from 3-7 heads , see 5:51 Hercules trials
How about some Joe Bonamassa "Mountain Time" live from Royal Albert Hall 🎸🤘
A better example of his soul-type guitar mastery...
Steve Vai - "Tender Surrender"

Heads up! It's a video.
Ever see or hear him and Zappa playing Stevies spanking all they do is trade licks :)
Check out Yankee Rose when he played with Dave Lee Roth
Wrong, Ry Cooder recorded all the Slide guitar for the movie, including the famous duel😮
great reaction guys. if like guitars that talk to you... i would highly recommend joe satrarini whom also trained steve vai "always with me, always with you" here: ua-cam.com/video/VI57QHL6ge0/v-deo.html and eric johnson is another good one "cliffs of dover: ua-cam.com/video/5Nd7EZ3k39s/v-deo.html 😎
😮 I hereby formally apologize for whoever it was that threw you in the deep end of this pool here😅😅😅😅😅
Its pronounced V EYE
Tender Surrender. Bring a towel. 😂
Oy Vey . . . It's Steve Vey . . .
Ordinary guitars suffer the Inferiority complex while being near that beast 😁
Sultans Of Swing Live Alchemy by Dire Straits
Tender Surrender next
Steve has always been way ahead of everyone else. Eddie was great but not on this man's level. No disrespect Eddie God rest your soul brother
If I’m not mistaken, Steve Vai taught Kirk Hammet of Metallica guitar lessons.
His last name is Vai just like apple pie apple vai
Joe Satriani another guitar master lol/ Surfing w/the aliens ;)
Tender Surrender!
Pronounced V eye. the 'ai' is an eye sound. Steve Vai. Almost rhymes with five.
Hydra = three headed monster (Greek mythology)
Yes, it’s neat, but he does a much better job just with a single guitar. Yes, the shows his dexterity and flexibility, and being able to play three different instruments almost simultaneously, however, just watch them with a natural electric guitar and be amazed.
Actually, it is 4 musical instruments at one time
He’s not bad…
His name is pronounced 'VYE' as in HIGH.
His name is pronounced “VY” not VAY.
For your information, of course
