Massive success or not! Did Sonic Frontiers go far enough with how it handled the character of Amy Rose? A more serious story, more ambitious game play, a renewed focus on the characters! But did this new focus work? Is the extended cast any more important by the end of Frontiers than they were after Sonic Forces? Despite spending the last 20 + years in character limbo, Amy Rose is still has a very strong cult following and is one of the most well known characters in the Sonic the Hedgehog series! Becoming the first female hero, and the person destined to have a life-long one-way love affair with Sonic the Hedgehog in Sonic CD all the way back in 1993! Through the Little Planet saga, Perfect Chaos, the Ark incident with Shadow the Hedgehog, Neo Metal Sonic, The Time Eater, Infinite? Amy has been by Sonic's side through a lot of it, but the last decade has been very tough for her character. So how does she fair in Sonic Frontiers? After such a long time of her character yo-yoing between one extreme and another and often being completely inconsequential, is it even possible to raise the character of Amy Rose to the heights she deserves? The Amy that was hinted at during the Adventure era. There is a lot of rebuilding that needs to be done here to return our beloved hammer wielding heroine to her former self! Regardless of any one Sonic the Hedgehog Shipping preference or your opinions on SonAmy. So let's analyze how Amy fits into the story of Sonic Frontiers, and how it might impact her character going forward! Ian Flynn has done a LOT of good for the IDW Sonic series, but does that transfer to his first time writing for the game series? A character analysis of Amy Rose in Sonic Frontiers anyone?

Amy seems to have a certain charm at bringing the compassionate side of not just Sonic, but nearly everyone she interacted with.
Gamma, Shadow and Silver are notable examples of this.
If you ask me, Amy NEEDS to have here own game after Frontiers.
Doesn’t have to be the next $60 game, maybe a downloadable title just about her, along with Cream and Sticks, helping people.

What I think is truly fascinating, is that Sonic and Amy feel like they compliment each other super well. Like the way they're written here makes me want to see more of them together.

This is the year of Amy Rose, and as someone who has loved her for 20 years now, even through the bad characterizations, I couldn't be happier about the newfound respect she is getting from people AND from her fellow characters.
She is a powerhouse, she is feminine, she is loving, she is strong, she is compassionate, she is lively.
She is a friend, she is a companion, she is a sister, she is a leader, she is a partner. She is SO much and I'm thankful they are putting those traits at front for her.
She deserves the love and I seriously hope they keep this progressing going, because it feels like this franchise is finally back on its feet, standing tall and strong.
I like how Amy in this game definitely shows compassion with trying to help others in the best way she can, to the point where maybe a 12-year old monologuing about transcendent love is too much lol. There was almost nothing about her crush on Sonic, though, no comic relief like that as you mentioned.
Adventure 1 already did that, it's nothing new.
I believe they’ve officially de-canonized the ages. To age them up and not have them perpetually children

Amy is way better when her love is only implied and not a comic relief. Now, she comes closer of Sonic but in a way more sympathetic and likeable way. She is still in love with Sonic, we see she implies some things in Frontiers, but now, she doesn't act as a stalker, and that's exactly what it takes, because it was the reason why Amy was badly seen before.
One thing I've seen Amy fans note (and I've noticed this too) is that ONE trait was a bit left out of her portrayal in this game. Her peppyness. People who attached themselves to the best portrayals of Amy usually also see her as this wholesome force of positivity. Now, Ian HAS ackknowleged this and said that its because overall the dev team wanted the somberness that we were sold on for this game to still shine brightest on the first island, with Sonic and Amy not knowing if anything theyre trying to do will work. Some people arent buying that argument, bt myself I just am happy that he knows about this issue people had. Plus we know that this isnt something he forgot about or anything, hes writen her before
That being said I actually think I prefer the way Evan Stanley writes for her character, not sure about it, but I might be scewing in that direction

Just one thing, it isn't just because of Ian Flynn that Amy was portrayed the way she was in Frontiers. Same goes for the other characters. There were other writers, as well as multiple Sonic character supervisors that went into this game. Whatever dialogue Flynn wrote had to go through 4 other people before what we got in the final product. Not to dunk on Flynn but I just think this something to keep in mind. Frontiers isn't an Ian Flynn game. There's more going on there.

I watched this video multiple times, expecting to find something to critique. But you seemed to have nailed every point. All without hammering in her "less than favorable" portrayals in the past.
I had a "discussion" with someone about why Sonic was so dismissive about helping Amy's Koco buddies. For whatever reason, he couldn't except that Sonic's top priority was helping his friends at this point of the story.
If I have one critique, it would be that I had no problems with Amy's voice acting. Not when I was playing the game myself or rewatching clips on UA-cam.
I would love to see that road trip Amy had in mind with Cream and Sticks. The same goes for a potential spin-off game. Maybe a Sonic Adventure 1+2 style game. And her speed would match Sonic's in those games.
In the past, Amy hasn’t been appreciated as a character but then in Frontiers, Amy is shown how she was meant to be in the first place.

God I hope the movies do her justice, I love Amy a lot and I hate when she characterized as just having a crush in sonic she’s got a lot of heart and personality that we don’t get to see a lot
Something worth noting about Amy is that compared to Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, Amy is the equivalent to a "normal person" in Sonic's world. She's not naturally superpowered in any way, and she doesn't have any sort of elevated status. Sonic is renowned as a hero even if he doesn't see himself like that and has an affinity with the Chaos Emeralds, Tails is a genius and the closest person to the hero Sonic, and Knuckles is the last of the echidna and guardian of the Master Emerald. Amy isn't naturally gifted in any way and isn't usually depicted as anything more than a normal girl who happens to hang around with Sonic. Her strength is all something she had to work for (most aptly depicted in Sonic Battle, where she is depicted doing boxercise while wearing extremly heavy weights), and she is only able to keep up with Sonic due to sheer determination. Even stuff like her tarot card reading was supposed to originally depict her as normal, as fortune telling is a typical girl's past time in Japan (while it's viewed as more mystical and strange in the west).
I think with that context in mind, it makes it a bit easier to appreciate her portrayal in Frontiers. Tails and Knuckles are shown to doubt themselves in some way and have something to prove and overcome, but Amy has unrelenting faith in her friends and in her own convictions, so she doesn't need to have any major doubts that Sonic needs to help her with. She didn't need help figuring out what she wanted in life, but Sonic's reassurance that he will be there to listen to her stories when she gets back is enough of a comfort to help her move forward with that. The Koco Amy helps are all spirits of civilian ancients, and the fact she helps them is aptly symbolic of how Amy is a normal civilian who constantly puts herself on the front lines in order to help others through her compassion.
I'll admit I didn't super resonate with Amy at first in this game, but by the third playthrough of this game, I found myself getting more keen on the ideas they presented with her here. I'm looking forward to how the DLC expands on her further.

@@BJSolar02 Well yeah, Sonic Team did confirm that Sonic does have feelings for Amy, but SonAmy not being canon is mainly due to a mandate Sega made about not letting the Sonic characters be in any relationships.
If Amy got a spin-off game, I would like a similar thing from Super Princess Peach in story, but gameplay similar to Sonic Advanced for the GBA
What an awesome video! I do wish Amy had a little more spunk (though not necessarily targeted towards chasing Sonic), but I agree that overall, Amy was done rather well in the game.

Really hope frontiers expands on sage in the future too. This game is like a prologue to a new generation of Sonic stories and the momentum is there.
Especially to start making eggman like king dedede where he has a softer relationship with the protagonist

Well hopefully the Frontiers DLC with Amy as a playable character might show even more of her character, and hopefully it will be that way for Amy and all other characters moving forward with the franchise from now on.
I really do think that she, along with the other characters should have been playable out of the box, as it'd help expand the story greatly. Perhaps the other characters could help Sonic uncover the mysteries of the island in Cyberspace, and then ultimately rally together to bring Sonic back after he succumbed to the cyber corruption, by looking to seek out the Chaos Emeralds to bring him back. Rather than all joining hands and using the Power of Friendship in a poor man's re-run of Sonic's death in 06, but with less steps and even less gameplay.
@@DemonDethchase I agree but considering that they were out of budget and time, the game had to be out either way. I'm still glad the other characters are considered for playable status.

Excellent video as always! Hopefully we get to see that consistency for all characters going forward. I think they've found a good level for each in Frontiers and it would be nice to have a consistent path going forward. Can't wait for your next video!

Before watching: I feel like people equate her energetic, head-strong, gung-ho nature with her Sonic obsession, when really she's just like that and that's okay.
When I see do people praise her depiction in newer media, it seems like it always stems from "its better because shes not a psychotic stalker drone" instead of her actually being a *better written* character. She's now just a different kind of drone - a trope that doesn't make sense for the character ( how can a character go from being the immature naive head-first diver to being the voice of reason that keeps everyone together?? You cant have "off screen character development" for that)
But yeah, Amy taking risks with good intentions is always good for plot purposes, and more realistic than back-tracking/de-growing characters to make them make poor decisions (see Sonic the Hedgehog in Sonic Lost World, Sonic Prime). She can still be herself without Sonic obsession. She doesn't need to go full-on "Morally Sound, Strong, Capable and Kind Female, the character". She can have flaws. Those are what make good characters. And yes- despite popular belief, a "hero" character can have minor moral flaws too. It is okay.
As for her Frontiers character, I thought she was alright, but she felt devoid of something - and for what the feel of the game was at first, it made sense. She doesn't feel necessarily sad or down, but she "sorta" perks up near the end of her arc. But once you experience the rest of the game it feels kind of like an outlier and it starts to feel like she was "just there" (for lack of better words). It wasn't much of a character arc compared to the other arcs - or even her own from Sonic Adventure, however dated you may feel that game is. Maybe if she was placed on a later island in the game it would help since things start to look more rough for Sonic as the story goes on. The writers could have rode the wave of this plot progression to sort of "sync" the tone with the tone of Amy's part. Its "fine" where it already is, but that always felt like it was more due to the mysterious nature of the island and lore snippets we were getting throughout Kronos.
I really do believe her Frontiers writing was a sort of test run to see where she can go. I still believe the IDW decision to make her the leader of the resistance was completely random and poorly thought out - but hey. Maybe they wanted to pay homage or something since they were writers for Archie. But these 180s need to stop. Amy DOES have a character that's plenty strong on its own in terms of plot potential. Let her fill that potential her own way. Not ways forced on her.
After watching: So glad you pointed out Amy putting others before herself. But what I don't really get is how her resolution is something she got from the Koco. She was already doing the thing she decided to do - she was helping people around the world in IDW. It's more of a reminder to herself from what i see
I wouldn't say Amy is terrible in Frontiers (she's far from it), as at least she retains her compassionate side, but now she's become very bland and boring, it feels like they're now trying to make Amy just a good girl so they can please everyone (including haters)They removed other qualities of Amy that made her Interesting, such as her sassy, energetic attitude or how she had funny moments with Sonic, etc. Now Amy is just a nice girl like Cream or Maria.
I guess it's a good thing that she retains that spunk attitude in "The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog" so it was just for setting the tone in the beginning of Frontiers.

@@antrox2346 I personally wouldn't call the maturity fake, she kinda needed that to be open in frontiers considering that she's well put together in IDW and essentially is mentally more wise than she was in the past. I believe her being so down in frontiers is not only for tone, but also to somewhat confirm that she's older now, she's no longer that clingy 12 year. She still loves Sonic but she became more respectful towards him in recent years and I like that. She became her own person with her own goals and that's great. Of course that's just my perspective, you're open to disagree to this.
@@nalaxysketches8519 She was already her own character long before Frontier, I don't know why many repeat that. I just think it's a false maturity, because it just happened without explanation, plus it feels like another character, as if they were trying to erase the past, plus maturing is not about becoming calm and boring, it's about being yourself, and knowing how to cope better. Amy in Frontiers is fine, but it's not the direction her character should take, because they just don't let her be herself, she feels like a flat character in some recent media.
No joke Frontiers actually made me like Amy a lot more then I originally did. I liked her ok before, but she annoyed me a lot at times. Thanks to this game (and your video) however I’ve now seen the true Amy Rose and she becoming one of my favorite characters now. Sega please keep this hype train going the games finally have good writing again.
If she stars in a new game with Sticks and Cream, I bet it'll be some sort of refinement of Sonic Heroes. Amy for speed and Cream for flight like the past, but Sticks for Power instead of Big.
I'd rather not see Sticks in the mainline games. Especially when in the Japanese dub there's no mention of her. Keep Big, along with Cream as part of Team Rose.

I actually did enjoy her character in the game, and I never thought about it before, but yeah, I do agree that this may be the continuing characterization of Amy, moving forward in the series.
I definitely would like a refined Adventure moveset for her, while also including a speed boost lol.
Hopefully in the next game, we'll see a more capable and mature Amy, while seeing how Sticks and Tangle will be represented, if Sega goes forward with making them canon in the mainline games.
I think in her time in Cyberspace, she knew that Sonic won’t love her back. So she’s willing to spread passion and love to others than just Sonic.

Personally I'm OK with this version of Amy, though she could use just a tad more of that Adventure era whimsy/spunk IMO. My biggest fear is that she would've turned out like Boom!Amy but thankfully that wasn't the case.

I love how the writers were like "Hey remember Sonic Adventures? Let's bring those characters from that game back to this game."
It's no secret that that game back then is very beloved because of how the story there took the characters personalities very seriously. They reminisce of their adventures with Sonic back on the Saturn and NES. They realize that Sonic has been carrying them throughout those games and want to repay him by carrying themselves for a change.
Just like with Tails, there's some meta thing going on here where Amy has been very inconsistent as well and her time trapped in cyberspace opened her eyes to what she has become and how she can go back to what she was in Adventure.
I read an article that after Frontiers, a romantic relationship for Sonic is possibly coming.

Amy unfortunately suffers from "Girl" status a lot of the time, going from "boycrazy love freak" to "possible love interest" to "the only one with emotional intelligence." I sort of wish they'd pair her more with Blaze (y'know, if they'd have Blaze show up at all), especially Rush Blaze, because talk about someone with NO emotional intelligence, and it makes a good dynamic. But yes, I like the more mature direction for her in Frontiers, and the fact that her love for Sonic is still a thing, she's just not constantly trying to make him fit her narrative. She loves him, that's not going to change. He can deal with that in whatever way he chooses.

I hate the "girl" status treatment cause it takes things that can be inherent personality traits and treats them like maturity levels (well, fans do this a lot so that may be the cause). I think her spinoff game should be about her journey of spreading love around the world. Maybe you play as Amy and you have to solve... "friendship problems" (I know that sounds cringey but hear me out) and with every friendship problem she solves, she uses her own past experience to help solve it. Like maybe there's a boy that's really obsessed with a girl and she tells him "Hey, you need to chill out cuz being too clingy will push them away. You need to give them space. I know from experience cuz I was once obsessed with someone too."

An evolution in her Adventure gameplay would be interesting. Plenty of slower paced combat platformers have released in the years since that Sonic Team could draw inspiration from for it.
In My Opinion out of all the character's in the Series Amy is starting to become my Most Favorite sure her character development has been back and forth over the Years but it never bothered me and I think she should get more appreciation from Fans sometimes her Obsession for Sonic can be funny to me nowadays the Game Frontiers found the right balance for her

I wasn't very impressed with Amy, along with sounding like old woman who is a Karen in places with her English dub, like when confronting Sage. I feel Ian Flynn pretty much turns her into Mr. Burns high on painkillers, with her expressing a desire to go out into the world and spread the love, even though she already does that. And I don't think we needed to be told the explicitly obvious of what she's about. Especially when in the Japanese version...

Amy: Yeah... she was just like me now... Going straight for someone without looking aside to tell them you love them... that's nice and all, but it's not enough. I was only thinking about the immediate future... To figure out what I need to do now, I need to find myself to be more refined.
Sonic: Finding out who you want to be? That's kind of dazzling.
It feels more like being in line with her looking to be a charming lady, like at the end of her story in SA1, who would turn Sonic's head and make him wonder what he'd been missing.

I think that after seeing how she was written in Sonic Boom and took that inspiration with the later games, I am liking this version of Amy that we have seen in the IDW comics and Frontiers. She isn't seeking attention from Sonic anymore and she's a part of the team that makes Sonic have that mutual relationship better as opposed "OH MY GOD SONIC! that we saw in Heroes.

Sharing love and compassion for others and for the world is something that amy had always done before the meta era.
Unfortunately, sonic doesn't tell amy that it's what she'd been doing that before. As if this is something new that she has never done before.

It's great to see how much love and time in the spotlight Amy has gotten recently! Always been a fan of her, and I did like her moments in Frontiers. I'm interested in seeing where they take her character from here on out, and whether or not they are going to develop her relationship with Sonic. To me it looks like they are nudging Sonic and Amy in that direction in Frontiers, because of the romantic tension they seemed to have in the game.

If there is a continuation to Amy's journey, I hope she grows closer to Shadow. Amy is pretty much the reason Shadow became a good guy in SA2 and there have already been canon details that show a potential romantic bonding between the two. Sonic saving Amy isn't special to Sonic since he saves everyone and he really hasn't shown that much interest in her. Shadow on the other hand, being somewhere on the same physical level as Sonic has been saved spiritually by Amy and unlike Sonic reciprocates by doing something akin to a first date: taking Amy out to a concert for her birthday. I don't want to see a love triangle between these three characters, but it be nice to see a growth in interpersonal relationships with the other characters instead of how everyone always relates to Sonic.

Frontiers Amy is, in my humble opinion, the best Amy we have ever seen. Not to mention, she is the cause of BY FAR my favourite scene in the entire game so far (I have only just begun tails' island, so could still change), being the scene right after the 2 lover Koco reuinite and then die. Where it starts of with her, after having finally helped everyone else, realizing the state she is in by being unable to grab the flowers. Which then fluently flows into the most touching interactions in any sonic game ever, where Amy shows both her love for sonic, while also showing her own motivation and personality goals. Which results in something we haven't seen... ever, really; Sonic comforting Amy, effectively telling her that he will wait for her.
as for the 'lack of comic relieve' for amy... I think that's a good thing. Knuckles is thé comic relieve character in the sonic group. Amy doesn't work as comic relieve character. She works best as the supportive background player, with only the occasionaly comedy to her.

It's somewhat motivating that Amy isn't too Lazer focused on Sonic and can be around her hobbies and other clubs rather than just Sonic. Though it's a second or below third driving force, it's not something that's completely central for Amy

What a great video! Pretty crazy that you did analyze Amy’s character like this. I like Amy in this game, but man, the voice direction thing you talked about only makes me irrationally angry. The fact that they didn’t give her a sort of arc and better direction just seems like SEGA and Sonic Team hate her. Again. But hey, there is still hope for her in the DLC, although I am expecting the best and worst.
Glad you enjoyed it! I don’t think it’s necessarily that they hate Amy, I think it’s far more likely that during global events that recording was done differently, and then being pushed for time meant that they couldn’t fix it. That’s just my own theory though.

Given her new level of maturity and strong sense of morality, I’ve been starting to wonder lately if Amy would have made a good cop in the Sonic world. There have been a few fanfics with her joining G.U.N., and while I don’t think that would be possible given they’re more a military faction, I can’t say her joining an organization to protect lives and stop villains like Eggman isn’t something she would do.

Amy is lile the aries zodiac, we are complicated when people don't understand use but when u do u find out that we are simple, we get annoyed easily but it's for a reason, idw amy is a calm version, the extreme version of amy is our anger and dedication, i think because her writting was all over the place she became confusing but she isn't really that confusing. As someone who has Amy as their favorite character, both her and Knuckles were done the dirtiest over the years and to be quite frank I always felt people overreacted to her previous character and always put context that wasn't there because of it. And unpopular opinion, I wouldn't even call her a stalker most of the time, if you discount her Rush, 06, Generations or Battle appearances nothing she does I would consider being a stalker really. I still say Adventure, Adventure 2, Heroes and Prime are my favorite versions of Amy if you don't count the Archie and IDW comics, which bring out the best in the character. I also disagree with saying Amy shouldn't like Sonic anymore because that was literally supposed to be the point of her character, that's like saying Tails shouldn't be a tech genius because the meta era overrefined that aspect of him, or Knuckles shouldn't guard the master emerald because he was made stupid. I do like what Frontiers attempts to do with Amy, as far as emphasizing her being the heart of the crew. My issue is that this change of character does not feel authentic, it feels like Sonic Team's continual response to negative fan feedback by just giving fans a version of the character they think is good, regardless of if it feels like a reboot. And that's not how you improve a character, in a writing sense it doesn't work that way, you don't suddenly shift a character in a completely different direction to say they've grown. That's like if Nintendo responded to the criticism of Princess Peach being a Damsel in Distress by making her Samus Aran or Bayonetta, she goes from being kidnapped to never needing a man to save her and is all of a sudden the big ass kicker of the group, and changing her personality to barely resemble her just to say she isn't a damsel, rather than just deemphasize that aspect about her, and emphasizing her positives. Sure, Amy isn't to that extreme, but my point is that they just went into another direction, and it feels as if she isn't allowed to like Sonic anymore because 'people wouldn't like that' even though Frontiers isn't afraid to reference Tails lowest points in a way to emphasize his character arc.
Amy Rose character traits like her being a bubbly, silly energetic girl, who is not afraid to spoke abt her crush for Sonic, shouldn't be changed just because majority of fans who keep asking to eliminate it dislike or even hate Amy's character. Like, why would you only hear the opinions of fans who dislike Amy as a reference to what the character needs? That doesn't make sense. Like, why would you listen to that group of fans who expresses their disgust for Amy's character and majority of times don't offer a solution, just complain about her existence. I also don't mind Amy having a temper, it should be how it was in Adventure though, where she brings out the temper and hammer when it is needed to put someone in their place or if they mess with her or her friends. Because it gives Amy a character flaw, she's compassionate and expresses more emotional insight better than Sonic but can also be just as shorttempered. Since I feel Amy lacks any flaws really. I guess I like it better when Amy is allowed to showcase her range of emotion, rather than one or the other. I personally feel it would've been better if the game had acknowledged her past with Sonic, allowing her to reflect on who she was then compared to now, or even a suble nod, but in a more 'I'm kidding' context. Showcasing while she wants her own goals, she can still be playful with Sonic.
Because of this, Amy now lacks any distinct characteristics other than her being calm and motherly, who exactly is she as a person because at least Amy before had a distinct personality. Even if you described her as annoying fangirl that's still describing a character. I feel in showcasing one side of her, they abandoned other parts of her too, the only difference is she isn't defined by Sonic, which is good, she shouldn't be. But she also lost her personality traits too. I do feel Cindy's performance plays a part in that. Cindy just gives Amy the same blank emotion, her range never changes. Even in IDW Amy showcases range of emotions while keeping her more mature persona. Amy doesn't need to go back to who she was, but just striking the right balance, since I don't feel her character change in the video games is natural, just more of a play it safe approach to appeal to people who didn't like her before. She now comes off as just a diet version of her Boom persona, which makes her character less distinct on both ends since the whole point was that Boom Amy was supposed to be a different version of her, now they are similar, except Boom Amy had more personality and emotion. she could even be immature or short tempered as well. It's still better than the Meta era giving her no character though.

In any case, yeah, the base of her character was erased for no reason - she can still be naive risk taker that acts first and thinks later, and be a little hotheaded, WHILE caring about the people around her
Thank you for the amazing in thoughtful comment, for me Amy was the weakest character in this game as far as characterization goes. I knew something was wrong with her but I couldn't put it into words, I just thought of it as weak dialogue being the issue.

I tried editing my previous comment several times and even still I sounded like an asshole on my previous changes, I'm sorry, what I said still stands, that is Flynn sucks at writing Amy and that he left her side of the story as an afterthought, reason why I don't like it. I just... wish that her DLC doesn't have Flynn writing for it, leave that to Evan Stanley or Tyson Heese, two writers that already know how to write her without any contradiction or biases to her characterization.
A last tip is to please analize Amy correctly and not use the already burnt out words this bullshit fandom associates with this character, you are right that she always puts the needs of others above her own but please don't call this portrayal mature when it's anything but that, the fact she's less expressive about her feelings and more chill is not maturity, being dishonest with what you feel is not maturity, it's at best positive discrimination when the JP dub have her character intact with no changes.

@@rickyrackey7930 I know but why is her objective to spread the word of love? Didn't she do that ever since 1999? Compared to the JP dub it makes no sense for me. In the JP dub, Amy realized that the Koco's story is a reflection of her story with Sonic, someone who never turned back to say they love someone. While Amy loves Sonic, she also had to think of herself as a person, reason why she takes on the journey, it's still Amy who realized that and as a hard worker, it hits more.
The context of the Koco also changes, it was never explicitely said that they were lovers, Amy first assumed that they were friends and after seeing what happened, she understood everything.
At the end she even says "next time you see me, you'll be sorry", a reference to her promise in SA1 that whenever Sonic realizes the wonderful person she is, he'll be late to go back to the way it was.
For so much praise this version recives for artificial maturity, the way Amy actually had her revelation and what she wants to do afterwards feels much more mature and in character than wanting to do something she did and never stopped doing ever since her redesign because it's Amy's story and she's all about love. And without an actual hint or something in game that tells us she stopped doing that, I don't buy it, I'm sorry but Flynn has to do better with this character and it disappoints me that with how much Kronos has been divided into 3 islands, the japanese suceeded where he failed.

Sonic Frontiers made Amy Rose even special as before. She's more mature as her counterpart in Sonic Boom plus she is willing to give Sonic advice when she needs to plus her love for creatures still remains as she is caring and protective of the Kocos. Even though Sonic saved her, she at least immediately asked if he's okay which means she has grown as a character after so many years. Plus seeing Sonic and Amy actually talking to each other without Sonic running away is very nice.😊💕

Throught Sonic Frontiers, Amy felt boring, flanderised and gloomy. People want to talk about how the tone of the game is a valid reason for Amy being out of character but forget that Sonic Unleashed also had an end of the world event which saw Amy retained her bubbly, energetic, optimistic personality. Even worse is, Sonic Frontiers had her only show compassion and not a single romantic remark towards Sonic unlike SU. The real Amy Rose would be overjoyed to spend time on an island alone with Sonic.

Even in Frontiers, the only time she's had an actual character since like Chronicles her main defining aspect outside of the fact she's caring is that she is female. I like how Frontiers reignites Amy's caring nature and emotional intelligence, but it is at the expense of her other characteristics. Because fans didn't like them.
She basically has the same problem she did before only in reverse, instead of just focusing on Sonic, she now is not focusing on him and her only worthwhile trait is being calm and caring, which is just the same problem as her being overly focused on Sonic, since in both instances her other traits are completely ignored. The game also depicts her maturity by just making her subdued and monotone. Which isn't mature, I also find people use the 'Amy's mature" thing as a buzzword since there are different ways to be mature as there is immature. There's no emotional weight to it, she just shows an angry expression, but is slightly annoyed in her tone of voice.

you know , i think that there is some kind of an issue with amy that , while it might seem minor at first but i'm going to do the best i can to describe it
back at her introduction in sonic CD, it is pretty much apparent that her character is one that is facsinated with sonic , thinking of him as her love as shown in beggening of that game which is because fortune telling's cards she have, but when metal kidnap her , some thing that need to take n into consideration is that this show us some thing about her character which is very obvious after defeating metal and saying how she is before sonic save her immediately after the race , even though he do that in ending scene , and that is that she is not supposed to be a physically very strong character , she is not supposed to be like sonic , tails , or knuckles in terms of how strong they are when facing eggman and his robots , nor she is capable of doing what ever those character would do like destroying eggman robots , or being able to run so fast to keep up with sonic when running in zones but not with his speed of sound , that's why they give her a hammer in sonic the fighters , as she is not supposed to be strong enough to fight with out some kind of a weapon , or why they give her a car in sonic R as she is not supposed to run so fast , even though she is slower than other characters with it , and it's why it makes no sense that she would be able to run so fast in sonic heroes with the same speed of other speed characters despite how she was established in sonic adventure as being some type of slow character that is not capable of running with that speed of other characters , let alone being strong enough to fight boss fights and finish them with her hammer ,

BREAKING NEWS: Sonic is in secret love with Amy Rose. The usually aloof hero has been hiding his true feelings for Amy for years. I think Amy love for Sonic Is dead I'm just not seeing any indication of it, Amy's not the type to hide her feelings.
I don't get that impression, personally. My impression is that it's _changed_ and _matured_, but not that it's _died_. Amy's entire story in Frontiers is about love, her Memory Tokens are all hearts that you have to give to her. Hell, both IDW and Sega of Japan in general still push Sonamy and show Amy having a thing for Sonic pretty evidently. They even hint at reciprocation in Unleashed and Frontiers.
It's just no longer the "leap on Sonic out of nowhere and loudly proclaim she'll make him marry her or she'll whack him" kind of dynamic that proved so problematic to the characters of both Sonic and Amy, but instead more of a mutual crush where Amy wants to wait for Sonic to be ready for that kind of relationship.
Amy shows her feelings in different ways, that's really all it is; she pushes him to be his best, they banter and joke and they each show deep concern for each other.

Even in Frontiers, the only time she's had an actual character since like Chronicles her main defining aspect outside of the fact she's caring is that she is female. I like how Frontiers reignites Amy's caring nature and emotional intelligence, but it is at the expense of her other characteristics. Because fans didn't like them.
She basically has the same problem she did before only in reverse, instead of just focusing on Sonic, she now is not focusing on him and her only worthwhile trait is being calm and caring, which is just the same problem as her being overly focused on Sonic, since in both instances her other traits are completely ignored. The game also depicts her maturity by just making her subdued and monotone. Which isn't mature, I also find people use the 'Amy's mature" thing as a buzzword since there are different ways to be mature as there is immature. I hate the excuse 'it's because she is mature" when mature people have different emotions. IDW and Prime have no problem giving Amy a balance with her mature persona, and in the former's, case balance her love for Sonic with other qualities. Amy's expressive in IDW, she can be happy, angry, anxious, sad, energetic etc. In Frontiers? She's just subdued with a monotone tone in her voice, as her emotions are all just said with the same expression. And even the one time she gets mad? There's no emotional weight to it, she just shows an angry expression, but is slightly annoyed in her tone of voice.
The fact people's response to improve Amy is often just to remove her crush on Sonic shows they don't want her to improve, but rather become what they think she should be. By this logic, that's like me saying Tails shouldn't focus on being a mechanic since that was his defining characteristic in the Meta era, only it was just because it was at the expense of his competence that it was the problem or Knuckles shouldn't guard the master emerald because he was made stupid. Even though that's the main characteristic of Tails, Amy's crush on Sonic was NEVER the problem, just how certain depictions would write it. Since it was both a good and bad thing on Amy's part. To me it feels sexist to say that it makes her better by removing that, because its implying she's only better based around what THEY think makes her better. Which is the case for most fans, they only Think she is good because she was made to fit what they think is good about her. Amy Rose character traits like her being a bubbly, silly energetic girl with a temper, who is not afraid to spoke abt her crush for Sonic, shouldn't be changed just because majority of fans who keep asking to eliminate it dislike or even hate Amy's character. Like, why would you only hear the opinions of fans who dislike Amy as a reference to what the character needs? That doesn't make sense. Like, why would you listen to that group of fans who expresses their disgust for Amy's character and majority of times don't offer a solution, just complain about her existence.

I honestly have issues with the way Amy and even Sonic and Knuckles are handled in Frontiers. But it's hard to put into words. But I do know a BIG reason why I feel this way is because the game was penned by a western writer. Something just feels off but with me saying things like this, I get many people going after saying I'm complaining just to complain. I can't help not enjoying what Frontiers gave us. I will say that I'm at least happen that more story focus games are coming back, I just don't want Ian or western writers at all writing the series. I would explain a bit more but I'm lazy and I'd rather speak to get my points across better
I kinda get what your saying and where you're coming from, I think it chalks up to the writing/dialogue. Some moments don't quite hit the mark.
I understand being apprehensive of Western writers after pontac and graff but Ian's track record speaks for himself and I'm more willing to put my trust in him for the foreseeable future

I think Amy having a strong characterization like this is great, as I've always been an Amy fan (SA1 is my favorite Sonic game) and admired her capacity for empathy, kindness, and her confidence. But it feels like a point of maturation that hasn't been earned yet. If Adventure era up until Heroes was her Act 1, this is like an Act 3. We never got to see Amy "get over" her obsession with Sonic. Obviously her character was not in an ideal position for many games in a row now, but it would've been nice to say, have a game where she plays a large role and in one of the cutscenes maybe she has a heart-to-heart conversation with Sonic. Maybe she could apologize for coming on strongly so often, for making him uncomfortable sometimes, while Sonic reassures her that he does care about her a whole lot as well with Amy being one of his best friends and all. That's just an example, as it stands it feels like Amy got Flanderized for a decade plus and then all of a sudden that obnoxiously handled, yet still legitimate, part of her is just gone now.
In my opinion, Amy is at her best when she annoys Sonic but not the audience. I can't help but smile whenever she enters the scene and her theme song My Sweet Passion starts playing WAY too loudly in the background, and her presence immediately commands attention. It would be cool to at least see how she grew from just after those games, into where she is now. Though, I would prefer she have some comic relief moments still. A funny character with a good heart is always a winning combo!

@@AceCardGaming It was never an obsession, the fanbase it so, and now Amy can't express love because people that never liked the character complain about it.
While a level of obsession can come down to perspective. Maybe many people believe Amy was obsessed because that’s what it seems like to them? You may not think so, and that’s ok. But you can’t really argue that so many people are flat out wrong just because they disagree with your own take and preferences. Is a subjective topic about a fictional person. We won’t always agree.

The interactions Sonic and Amy have: being more mature, open, and respectful to each other… you can tell, just with the callbacks of past games, that these are still our heroes, just more experienced and mature. They’re seasoned heroes, Sonic and his friends are like family. So it makes sense Amy, and her love for Sonic, has matured as well. She no longer chases after him constantly, but has instead learned to love him from afar. Because she’s known him long enough now to know he does lover her deep down. He’s just not the type to show it so intenmeantly, and emotionally. Sonic is free, cool, and selfless. She knows Sonic won’t flat out do something super romantic for her, because that’s not who he is, she’s accepted his love for her may not be traditional, or that he may not quite feel the same way, but her love is strong enough to reach him no matter how far Sonic and she is.

The Sonic and Amy we see from Forces and IDW onward, is certainly a much more emotionally mature version of the pair. While I prefer the voice of Jason or Ryan as Sonic, I came to realize that their performances purposefully reflected a more cocky, laid back, teen version of the iconic blue hedgehog, as his type of attitude then was resonated greatly to players of that demographic from the late 90s to the early 2010s. The last decade has had the Sonic characters change direction slightly. I wasn’t a fan at first of the newest, and current, Sonic voice actor, but realizing the writing since Forces is going more towards a slightly mature take for the characters, it makes since that the characters voices, like Sonic’s would be a bit deeper to reflect that. Don’t get me wrong, certain traits of the characters and elements of the franchise’s writing is still there. But, as with Forces, and games like Sonic Adventure, I’ve got a feeling Frontiers is setting up another shake-up for the storytelling and characters’ personalities/writing in the franchise. The game is certainly a good foundation for the seemingly new direction. With Ian Flynn involved in the writing, I’ve no doubt the next game, and Frontiers DLC, will be great.
