Should you ride 24 or 32 spokes? Well, it might depend on your frame!

    I’ve been riding the Industry Nine Enduro 315 wheels for a couple years now. I’ve had the 32 spoke variant for two years, and mounted to a few different bikes, and I’ve had the 24 spoke wheels on my Yeti SB130LR and Ibis Ripley AF. I went ahead and swapped the wheels a couple months back, and this has put my in the unique position of being able to A-B compare these wheels on 2 different bikes!
    Check out all the Industry Nine wheels available at Jenson USA via my affiliate link here: bit.ly/IndustryNineJKW
    Learn more about the Yeti SB130 here: bit.ly/YetiSB130CLR2022JKW
    Learn more about the Ripley here: bit.ly/RipmoAF2022gxJKW
    In short, I’ve found a balanced bike works best. A stiff frame (like the Ripley AF) will make a softer wheelset feel a little off kilter for bigger impacts, and a flexible frame will feel odd with a super stiff wheelset. I fell in love with the Yeti with the 24 hole wheels- a great balance that worked awesome for real life trail riding scenarios. The Ripley AF worked best with the 32 spoke wheels.
    Changing it up and swapping the wheels was a great experience- and while both bikes ride just fine with the “wrong” spoke counts, the overall experience was slightly better when taking overall bike feel into account when selecting the spoke count.

    Great Video!
    I ride a gravel bike. I have a 24h Dt swiss 460 to replace the 32h fulcrum wheels. Takeaways.
    1. Weight is not as important as overall features
    2. Wheel dimensions are also important to consider
    3. Ride feel is more comfortable on 24h, better acceleration, better climbing
    4. 32h feels like a faster top speed. Stiffer.
    5. PR were so far faster on heavier 32h stock wheels.
    6. Tires are very important, finding a good match for your riding may take time.
    If I was Riding open and able to maintain high speed without braking a lot 32h
    In city start and stop, climbing 24h.

    I can definitely see how both have their advantages (and I can also see why some brands go for a middle-of-the-road 28h rim), but as a big and heavy rider I'll always pick a 32h for its higher weight limit. If you're 250lb+ there's a decent chance 32h is your only option.

    • @JeffKendallWeed
      @JeffKendallWeed  2 роки тому

      More crosses would mean a longer spoke, which in theory should be more forgiving too. But I don't think thats nearly as noticeable as the overall spoke count. We're talking about 25% fewer spokes here.

  • @Bonky-wonky
    @Bonky-wonky Рік тому

    Admittedly I’ve never tried a 24h wheel but for me 28h is the best compromise, being stiff enough for berm slapping, while being compliant enough for rooty trails. One thing I would like to add is that less spokes don’t just add compliance but the added flex also makes the bike feel more alive. I went from a 32h 4x laced wheelset to the DT EX1501 (previous rims were EX471s), what I noticed right away was the bike feeling lighter (weight difference in reality was negligable and in the centre of the wheel, Hope hubs vs 240s) and just more playful. Felt like the bike loaded in turns, rollers, undulations etc then gave that energy back in a nice and controlled way. On another bike I run RF Arc wheels, which feel very stiff but ‘pingy’ out of corners, like they flex and rebound in a more explosive way.
    Cool to see that mtbers are finally realising that wheels are also quite important in terms of handling.

    As a heavy rider, I've used 32 hole for all my wheels, even on the road bike. I'd consider fewer than 32 on Berd's UHMWPE spokes or Industry Nine's aluminum spokes, but for most conventional wheels I want to stick with 32. I recently acquired a 28 spoke set of DT M1700 wheels, and if those blow up, the hubs are going into a Berd build or going to a friend.

Of course, they need little bit truing after the first kms, because as i have read every machined made wheel (pretty much all budget wheels) have some uneven spoke tension, and needs to be fixed. I think that after truing, they will hold pretty well. The rims is general are fatter and seem to be stronger than those you can find on budget MTB' s.

  • @roccopietrofesa7914
    @roccopietrofesa7914 2 роки тому +4

    24 is ridiculous; you will have to re-true that wheel frequently and it will break spokes for sure. If you are a heavy aggressive rider you will smash that wheel. Run 32 spokes and you can use a thinner diameter spoke (1.8mm) to compensate for the weight. I build my wheelsets and I like to run a 28 up front and a 32 on the rear(rear takes the majority of the weight/impact). Having to constantly repair wheels to shave off grams is crazy.

    • @JeffKendallWeed

      I had to tension the 24h wheel once after absolutely sending it for over 6 months. That's the benefit of a carbon rim- a ton stronger than aluminum. 24 and 32 spoke build up to be nearly the same weight anyhow. 8 spokes doesn't weigh much at all.

    I would put good money up for a bet that what you "feel" and what is measured using torsional force on a press would not correlate. I'm a mechanical engineer, and the extra stiffness provided by 8 extra spokes does not contribute enough to the total to make be believe you can feel it. I think what you're actually feeling is more related to the weight and a predetermined inclination based on you expectations. id like to see some real measurements. if this was a blind test, I bet you'd not be able to tell the difference.

    Anyone remember 20 years ago people running 24 steel spoked radial laced wheels? Talk about dumb trends.

      LOL but radial lacing looks SWEET! Hahaha! I didn't mind the radially laced wheels with V-brakes. The old Bontrager Maverick Asym rims lasted me a long time.

    36 spokes is for a 29er, what 32 spokes are for 26'' rims.
    If you don't like skinny alloy, but overbuilt carbon hoops, you can save on spokes instead.
