    Jeff, thank you for these in depth reviews. I recently bought this frame used based on your videos, and snagged a Z1 fork using your Jensen link. Saving up for wheels and I will be on the trail! I threw the mullet link on, run a 2.8 in the back, 2.6 in the front moto style with the neutral head angle/High BB setting to make up for slight mullet drop. I ride everything comfortably like this. Slays corners, good for trail riding, feels great in the bike parks, jumps, and flow trails. *Low setting noticed too many pedal strikes on tech climbs. Love this thing.

    StumpyEvo alloy owner of a year here, the missing LSC knob on the float X makes a big difference, you can add the knob to that shock as the shock is the se as the performance elite, just has a missing knob. Adding it gives it a more composure and allows you to settle it down when climbing.
    The geo adjust makes a huge difference, I run my high and slack with a 160 mullet (WRP yoke) and it feels great everywhere.

    • @colincoulthard3021
      @colincoulthard3021 Рік тому +1

      Another vote for the geo adjust, it makes a significant difference to how the bike handles. High and steep for trail riding, low and slack for bike park, high and middle for enduro, low and steep for jump lines.

    What you are feeling while cornering is the 170 fork. I have had 3 SJ Evos and tried over forking them to 170 several times. HATED it every time. Bike does not want to initiate turns and once you get into the turn it wants to stand up.
    Drop the fork to 160 and then try the low BB/long CS setting. That with the 64 HA/mid up front was one of the best handling bikes I have ever ridden.

    There's an aftermarket link by Cascade Components available. It's supposed to increase progression and also travel to 158 mm. Might help with the bottom-outs and should also make for a better balance with the 170 mm fork. Would be great seeing you try out, if it actually makes a noticeable difference.

    The Evo is an amazing cornering bike, back end felt just as linear if not more so than the Ripmo and doesn't pedal anywhere near as good as the Ripmo, but where the Ripmo is a tad vague in corners the Evo corners like it's on rails. I personally didn't find it any more or less poppy off jumps than the Ripmo, honestly felt a lot like the Ripmo off a jump. I didn't get a chance to take it on any high speed tech, but it's a low bike even lower than the already low Ripmo so I think you'd need to watch out for pedal strikes more than other bikes

    I have two carbon EVOs and agree that the horst suspension platform is ideal for PNW trails. Setup advice: 1) Don't put a coil/linear rear shock on an OEM horst/linear suspension platform because it will bottom-out too easily, 2) That Dissector rear tire is a good tire, but it doesn't have enough purchase for those trail conditions, 3) That 170mm front-end is writing checks the 150mm back-end cannot cash, 4) Consider a rear shock that has compression dampening so not relying only on PSI/spacers, 5) Consider a fork that has high-speed rebound dampening to better manage those bigger/faster impacts.

    I have been running the stumpy evo for a few months now, and I absolutely love this bike. I have been running it as a mullet with coil front and rear. It is so agile and quick in the narrow trails that I ride in south florida. I have not had many issues with bottom outs once I moved to stiffer coils (600lbs R, Firm F). I have not been able to bring it up to highspeed so far due to the lack of mountains in florida, but it has quickly become my new favorite bike. I hope to make a trip after winter to the Carolina's to give it a shot in steeper terrain. Thank you for your wonderful content. I look forward to watching more in the future.

    Great video. I’ve owned a stumpy evo and have about a dozen rides on it. I too noticed i was blowing through the travel too easily in the rear so installed more volume reduction in the Fox Float X shock and increased low speed compression. That helped a lot. I’m 6’3” 175lb. Specialized would recommend i go with size S5 but i chose the S6 because it suits my style. High speed is no problem at all. Plenty stable for me. That’s in the middle head tube and the high BB setting. Running a 160mm Lyric fork which is mighty fine.

    Hey Jeff, I was reading in a forum that the float x actually does have hidden compression damping. On the front there is a little plastic cap that pops off where the knob usual is. You can get your local bike shop to order the dial, and install it. Basically fox left the ability, but hid it on the float x performance.

    I built a 140 Status this winter and only have a couple of rides on it. I’m in a similar boat as you, where the bike feels off in a sense. I’m used to a Reign with Cascade link / coil, which has a good amount of progression. Despite having the second largest volume reducer in the DPX2 on the Status, I feel like a bit more support is needed. The Status has the 2019 Enduro rear triangle

    Idk if there are any left on Jenson but I feel like this would be a great bike to compare to the 2020/2021 GT Force 29. Both are alloy frames with 150mm of rear travel, Horst link suspension, and 29in wheels. Both are in that trail/all mountain/enduro family depending on your persuasion. As a do it all bike the Stumpy Evo definitely wins but there’s a sizable price gap between the two.

    • @michaelmichaelagnew8503
      @michaelmichaelagnew8503 Рік тому

      I see this mainly as an Enduro bike, has too much travel for an all mountain bike. Like that Enduro bike that just almost isn't good enough to be an Enduro bike. Think the Evo should have stayed 140 rear and 150 fork. That's about as far an all mountain should go. Its the perfect in between from an XC bike to a downhill bike. If the stumpjumper evo Alloy was still 140/150 then I would have gotten one over a Trek EX 8 gen 6 probably. But the evo is no longer in the category I'm looking for which is a very good all mountain bike.

    Didn't love my alloy Evo for high speed trails until I added a Cascade Components link. Vastly prefer this setup to the stock link + volume spacers. @joshua_802 Рік тому

      @@sisufitness659 I haven’t. CC’s links lower the BB and slacken the static geometry on some bikes (this is true for most Santa Cruz bikes). Their Stumpy Evo’s link is one that does not impact the bike’s static geometry. The downsides are: 1) less resistance to pedal bob; 2) the frame’s warranty is likely to be voided by the link.
