The GOLD STATE COACH | How the monarch travels | Britain’s fairy-tale coach |

  • The history of the GOLD STATE COACH stretches back to the reign of King George III. Created in 1762, it wasn’t ready in time for his coronation, but has been used to transport the monarch to and/or from Westminster Abbey in every coronation procession since that of King William IV in 1831, including most recently, that of King Charles and Queen Camilla. It has also been used for many state openings of parliament and at Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee Pageant in 2022. Designed by William Chambers, made by Samuel Butler and with panels by Florentine artist Giovanni Battista Cipriani, you may wonder is the gold state coach made of real gold? Sadly it isn’t, though the effect of the gold leaf on its wooden frame is so spectacular you could be forgiven for thinking that it is. In this week’s video from History Calling we’ll look at this astonishing fairy-tale coach and at what it’s like to travel like a monarch by riding in it. You’ll hear about its incredible size and weight, the symbolism behind its classically inspired decoration, what sovereigns from Queen Victoria to Queen Elizabeth II thought about using it, who called it ‘horrible’ and who had a hot water bottle strapped onto it to make it a more comfortable ride. You’ll also hear the dramatic story of the day in 1795 that the King was attacked whilst riding in it, learn where it moved to during World War Two to protect it from Nazi bombs and see pictures of it in its current home in the Royal Mews at Buckingham Palace.

Um... none of it, I'm afraid! I appreciate how grand it is, & it's absolutely appropriate for its purpose, but for me it's like Versailles: WAY too much gold, too fancy, too over-the-top. A traditional Roma wagon is much more my style.

Many years ago, when security was far less of a concern and terrorism was unheard of, the coach used to be stored in the warehouse of one of London's main breweries. My father worked for the brewery and when I was about 8 years old I was able to go to see the coach and to touch it. It was being renovated as the leather straps were perished and much of the gesso was flaking off the sea gods at the corners. We were not allowed to go inside but it was quite an experience to be so close.

The concept of guerilla or inequal warfare is not new, even if the modern concept of terrorism didn't exist. Security was just as much of a concern for a monarch in the middle ages, which is why these coaches were surrounded by knights and other dudes with lots of pointy swords and sticks.

During our High School trip from Texas to London I decided to go out on my own and visit the Royal Mews. It was closed for Monday, however two officers walked out and I explained my plight. Eventually I was allowed in, and wandered about to see the various carriages including the Gold State Coach! To this day I haven't forgotten about it!
I also was able to see the horses and other vehicles.
Very kind of the palace mews to allow me to visit and learn, and a big Thank You for this video teaching me more!

My grandma's cousin's son drove this coach at the Queen's coronation. He was the head postillion rider and can be seen in all the clips. He also was an outrider at the Queen's wedding to Prince Philip. His name was Jim Parkes. He is my 2nd cousin once removed. He was born in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire in 1907 and passed near Brighton, Sussex in 1984. He lived at Buckingham Palace Mews. He does appear on a black and video on youtube about the Mews. I got to see all this in the Summer at the special mews tour. I told the staff there about him but they didn't see to know much and I couldn't see any photos of him about. I must get in touch with Buckingham Palace archives. My grandma was very proud of him. She was born in 1904 in the same town as was my mum in 1934. They would have gone to the same school.

Being American, I had no clue about this. I have come to love learning about British history (being less than 250 years-old we just don't have as much or go back so far). I love tradition & think keeping it for as long as it is sensibly possible is wonderful. Sounds like this "little" piece is one of the "price you have to pay" for being King/Queen. I'm glad they tough through it once in a while to show it off.

Why even *be* a royal, if you can't fairy-tale it once in a while? 😂Incidentally, I had heard that the beloved majesty, QEII allowed the Obama girls to have a ride in it, on the royal grounds. If so, then she truly understood the hearts of little girls. Thank you for your videos, HC, and a have a very merry Christmas, indeed!

Something I noted--I think the "tridents" held by the gods on the back of the coach are actually fasces, in this case replacing the axe blade with a trident. Historically, these were of course used as a symbol of imperial Roman authority and ultimate military might. That suggested to me that, despite all the peaceful imagery in the panels, there was still very much the message that the Great British Empire is the absolute power over all else and would roundly defeat and subjugate its foreign enemies, and would do so with divine support. Thank you for another great video, and happy holidays!!

The State Coach has recently been "Done Up" . Given decent springing, and re-upholstered. Not just for the sake of the royal posteriors, but so they can look rather happier when they get out. We, the British populace were told this before the coronation.

Thw trident 🔱 is a Khazarian tamga (modern day Ukraine ) . When then khazar Jews funded Britain in the war the took over breeding rights of the royals as part of their deal . History is a lot more colourful than we think , and a lot more complicated than we want to admit .

    • @vylbird8014
      @vylbird8014 5 місяців тому +4

Those are indeed fasces. The iconography appears in America too. It's represented many things over the centuries, but always authority. Most commonly it represents the power of government to enforce its laws and judgements. The bound sticks represent corporal punishment, the axe represents capital punishment. The statement can be summed up as "I hold the lawful authority to have you beaten or killed if you do not follow the laws I establish." It's not so much a threat as it is a statement of fact. An acknowledgement of the truth, however uncomfortable, that all codes of law rest upon a foundation of violence.
It makes perfect sense to put them on a royal coach. The monarch is, if only in the most traditional sense today, the foundational authority of British law. When we say someone is detained 'at His Majesty's pleasure' that is not just empty words: It is literally imprisonment under the authorisation of the king. That's why the monarch still has to personally sign a law before it can come in to force. They may function as only a rubber-stamp for Parliament today, but the coach is all about tradition, and the fasces are a reminder that traditionally the person within is the centerpiece upon which all government authority rests.

The reference to Queen Charlotte struck a personal note with me. Thanks to her recent popularity, my Four Times Great Grandfather is gaining some recognition in the art world. His name was Johann Zoffany, and he was originally from Frankfurt, Germany. The Keiser made him a Baron. He was popular amongst the European royals at the time. There was some excitement over a painting the owners thought was of a young Jane Austin by him. Only it turned out to be of some other lady, and Grandpa Johann hadn't painted it. His family also has become known for his daughter/my Three Times Great Grandmother Cecilia's custody battle to keep her children during a divorce. It caused quite a scandal. Grandpa Johann and Grandma Cecilia even tried fleeing to Australia in order for her to try retaining custody of her daughter. Unfortunately, it didn't work, and her ex-husband gained custody of all of their children. The law certainly wasn't kind to ex-wives back then. Grandpa Johann, on the other hand, waited for his estranged wife who abandoned him to die. Before marrying his long-time English girlfriend and mother of some of his children, including Italian born Cecilia. Her name was Mary Thomas. In the end, Grandma Cecilia lived with her father Grandpa Johann until he died in 1810.

Thank you for this great video on the State Coach. I can't say I have a particularly favorite decoration as it is all fantastic.
FYI, the high end American stage coaches were also sprung using leather. If they were as uncomfortable to ride in as the State Coach, I shudder to think what it was like in the low end coaches. Of course, they didn't have glass windows. They did have leather curtains that could be rolled down to keep out the dust coming up from 24 hooves pounding the dirt. This would have made it somewhat dark inside and, in the hot climate of the American west, very uncomfortable indeed.

I have never seen the Gold Coach but it certainly looks the part. My own "state coach" is a Ford Focus. No gold leaf on mine. It is a shame the suspension is somewhat lacking, but my goodness, people are going to look at you inside this incredible coach. It really did stand out when King Charles was in it last May. I find it really interesting that it wasn't used for the coronation of George IV, or was there some circumstance due to the fact that he had served as Regent prior to his reign that had an effect on his coronation? Lovely report! Have you ever heard of why the coach hasn't had it's suspension updated to make the ride more comfortable, or perhaps that's not possible.

Although I’ve never seen the coach in person, I’ve seen it so many times on TV and in photos and never noticed the palm trees. That seems a rather odd choice for an English coach. I think my favourite decoration would be the statues of the Sea Gods, how grand to have Neptune and Poseidon announcing your arrival with conch shells.
It does seem rather strange that there’s disagreements on the exact size of it, it shouldn’t be a difficult object to measure.

As an island nation with a large powerful navy and merchant vessels which would bring unique goods, spices, flora and fauna from a far flung empire that were largely unknown in Europe, the palm trees would make sense in that context. There are palm trees on the Isle of Wight since from around that time.

History shows one thing very clearly above all: change is normal. We can hope that royalty comes to truly know this and apply modern technology to create a smooth ride for all passengers in the coach. It certainly must be fixable. To insist it must stay as it was created means it, and those inside it belong in a museum not in real life.

@@RagdollcatloverIt has gone to the dogs. But that's because of a government run by single issue focus groups, quangos, pressured by big coporations and not by parliament. Stopping the economy for too long because of lockdowns etc. Gordon Brown selling our gold reserves. And an entirely London, service based economy and no heavy industry left. The contrast of monarchy might highlight that. But not the cause of it. The fact that Elizabeth's coronation was 3 times as lavish as the King's highlights that even more that we aren't what we once were. Despite the 50s still recovering from the war. The monarchy is the inheritance of the confidence we once had. We were the first industrialised nation...logically it makes sense that once we hit our peak the only way is down. Personally I think the priority for any country should be to produce good agriculture. Not stripping the soil etc.

I thought glass at that time was still very similar to what was available in the 1500s. Really unexpected and very cool, especially that it was strong enough to enable to withstand the beating it takes when being drawn.

Poseidon/Neptune and Amphitrite/Salacia are carrying their tridents in a bundle of fasces a powerful Roman symbol of imperium. This would be consonant with Cipriani's use of Roman symbols.
