It is a very beautiful and sad story that goes so incredibly far beyond simply "2 boys on a train"...I cry every time I see it. And the animation is just unreal. The best I can tell people is to read the book that has been translated into english. I can understand the movie but unfortunately have zero translation skills.
It's the same as the book, pretty much, so if you read that, you'll know what each scene is. Giovanni's scream at the end when he learns what happened to Campanella absolutely breaks my heart...
A very interesting little film. I'd love to see a version with English subtitles so I could understand the full symbolism at play here. My only regret, as a railway pedantic, is that they used American-built, squeaky-whistled Bisai Railway #1 as the basis for their engine instead of the superior British-built #12, an 1874 veteran of some of Japan's 1st railways. Both are housed in operational condition at the Meiji Mura architecture museum in Inuyama.
The actual steam locomotive which Kenji saw and loved was an american build Baldwin C type loco with narrow gauge which was used in Hanamaki railway at that time and this loco in the anime is a quite realistic rendition of that small pretty loco! It was in the photograph of the Hanamaki railway in the Kenji museum. sampei takayma
This came to the US once, and i missed it, I have always been a fan of Kenji Miyazawa, living in the US kind of sucks because I don't think this will ever return here T_T
Good Lord, I wish I could understand what they're talking about! But even if I don't understand it, the film is just wonderfull! Thank you so much for sharing! Greetings from Switzerland!
@ZizziHorrorshow Good guess! This short movie is a planetarium version of "Night on the Galactic Railroad" by Kenji Miyazawa. (/watch?v=H6rP-IzWpZ8&feature=related) It was translated in English, too. The story is too long for a planetarium show so that they just go over summary of it. It is great to watch this on the planetarium screen, and there're some planetariums still show this movie in Japan. It is in Japanese, though....
+Moon Hitsearth Pls take a look at Kenji Miyazawa's book named Night at the Galactic Railway : Ginga Tetudou noYoru which is translated into English which is quite a story containing Scorpion Fire, giovanni and Campnerla etc and this beautiful movie could detect only about a portion of that magnificent story. I wish you enjoy the original story!
***** I'm not a big reader, I read well, but my life is so action packed, I just don't find the time, yeah right? Actually I'm a big fan of truth, hidden inside the story. Like Sailor Moon, where they tell you the truth of the moon, and the earth, in a story that is easy to get, once you get it. This is best in the musicals, and the live action series. Phrases like " I come from a family burned by the ashes of the white moon" or "the sea is a blue burning mirror" there are so many. I do appreciate the recommendation. I don't think that most people that are Sailor Moon fans, have any idea how true the story is? The end of life on earth made beautiful, total genius. It's been like my bible, because of it's ease of understanding. Although I probably wouldn't have caught it, if I hadn't already known some of the truth. I've only known for almost 5 years now, they have known for much longer, well over 20 years, minimum. So I learned very much from Sailor Moon, it's been beautiful confirmation for me, for which I am forever grateful. Yep I'm 48, and Sailor Moon has changed my life, at least the way I think about it. Thanks again.
This is a Chinese subbed version. I can understand the whole film but /spoiler/ I don't know where Campanella went. I wonder if they showed this in Sunshine City Planetarium in Japan. I went there last year and watched another film.
@hayate2011ify That's what I thought , thanks for clarifying it for me :) I think It would completely awe-inspiring to see this at a planetarium, even if it is in Japanese. Maybe I'll travel to Japan someday and see if I can catch a screening of it! :D Have you seen it at a planetarium yourself? I need to find the English form too. I couldn't click on the link you sent me by the way, was it a link to the translated version?
I can understand what they were talking about...cause i'm a Chinese......it basically talked that two kids were friends. they were on the train going through the milky way ... i guess the story of Scorpio is the theme...even though i don't agree this story in the movie...
Please, somebody translate this with English subtitles, thank you for sharing. I feel I missed something important when they showed the cross? Can someone please explain this part to me, what are they talking about?
If you want to read the story you can find it on Amazon under Milky Way Railroad by Kenji Miyazawa. That's where I got it. But if not, at the part with the cross, one of the characters Campanella was talking about how no matter who you are, if you do good things, you're the happiest person in the world. He was talking to his friend Giovanni, who was also on the train.

It's beautiful isent it

by Kenji Miyazawa (27 August 1896 - 21 September 1933))

Thanks for sharing
