    How can you say it was "partially" the pedestrians fault for not stepping out of the way. You are suppose to yield to pedestrians, especially on sidewalks. They cannot react fast enough with a bike traveling at them in the dark going 12-15 mph with a bright light shining in their eyes. This is why a lot of places don't allow bicycles to be ridden on sidewalks. In my city, so many people are being hit by e-bikes on the sidewalk, someone even died. You need to ride more safer man.

      And I have changed how I ride, I am more carefull. But also keep in mind there where many things that caused this accident to happen. Some not in my controll. Biggest one being it was very dark. It was an accident. He's OK, I'm OK, and we both learned from it. I don't ride on the sidewalks alot, just when I come up to an intersection. I see alot of ebikers here that only ride on the sidewalks because it's safer, there are no bike lanes, and motorist don't care about bikes of any kind. I don't ride on the sidewalk very often, I try to avoid that but sometimes it's safer. So it's different in every city. But I am more aware now when I ride, and I will do what I feel is safe for me. And I will still get up on the sidewalk out of the road at an intersection. Once I cross the street I'm back on the road again and taking my chances, traffic laws here are merely a suggestion, there is no respect of any kind. Drivers don't care about you. So sometimes it's safer to be on the sidewalk. I never have any issues during the daytime, darkness changes everything and I am much more carefull when it's dark now. Live and learn.

    Just adding some context to the conversation....
    Must a bicyclist ride on the sidewalk? Is it legal? What about crosswalks?
    State law does not require bicyclists to ride on the sidewalk. State law also does not prohibit sidewalk riding, but does offer a provision to allow it to be regulated locally through ordinance and posted signs. MCL 257.660c states (Michigan Compiled Laws):
    (1) An individual operating a bicycle upon a sidewalk or a pedestrian crosswalk shall yield the right-of-way to pedestrians and shall give an audible signal before overtaking and passing a pedestrian.
    (2) An individual shall not operate a bicycle upon a sidewalk or a pedestrian crosswalk if that operation is prohibited by an official traffic control device.
    (3) An individual lawfully operating a bicycle upon a sidewalk or a pedestrian crosswalk has all of the rights and responsibilities applicable to a pedestrian using that sidewalk or crosswalk.

    I had a crash on my X-Class last year riding home from work at night. Instead of waiting to cross I decided to turn right and go up a ways to another intersection I could use to get back to my normal route. I was on the sidewalk almost to the next intersection I was going to turn. I got to a spot where some cables to a power poll came down and they had the sidewalk make a sudden move to get around it. I didn't see that until I was close tried to maneuver around and caught my right handlebar throwing me off the bike. Luckily felt like barely anything happened to me.
    My left side mirror was broken off and scratches to the break lever. The right crank arm and pedal was bent, some paint damage near the rear light. Had to go throttle only to get home. It made me realize I had my headlight pointing too far down.

    I hit someone before on a regular bike (not ebike) and nearly hit like 3 other people. All of these were at night/early morning and they were all blending in. This was back when I never really road with lights and relied on street lamps. Even then, sometimes people just blend in. I stopped riding on sidewalks when it's dark because of that lol

    He had to of seen your headlights? Another reason I get on the sidewalk at intersections is because if you're the only one there the light will never change , because the bike will never trip the sensors and you're stuck there. Glad you're ok.

    Hey buddy sorry to hear about your accident I’m glad your doing ok and I hope the other guy is doing ok cause I know getting hit by your bike had to hurt. But I’m sure he’ll be ok in a few days. I’m sure he’s sore also. I hope you wear gloves also besides a helmet. I’ve been riding for a very long time and I never ride without my gloves I can’t ride without them because I’ve been wear gloves my whole life riding and the rest of my riding gear. I live in Clinton Twp.. Michigan. I don’t know where you live in Michigan but some of your other videos show the Gratiot cruse. I didn’t go this year but I will next year. Please ride safe and be careful.

He's OK I saw him the next day and he was wearing lighter colored clothes and he stepped to the side and we let each other pass. And the bike is repaired. So life goes on and I'll always have this incident on my mind when riding in the dark.

    Yeah visibility is a big thing. I make the point of never riding the bike without putting on all lights - front and back. That might seem an overkill for a sunny summer's day but it's about me being seen. If a guy in a car is coming out of a side street with the sun in his eyes he might not see you. I have seen plenty of that in the past. Also that big box in the back might give some advantage if the bike falls over on it's side as it could prevent it scraping the paintwork on the frame. A while back I had a new bike roll off down a slope and tumble down concrete steps. The side of it was ruined. Manufacturers should put a catch bracket near the brake lever to stop this happening. I never dreamed of such a thing until the disaster happened to me. So I use a velcro strap to act as a catch for the brake lever for a case like this.

      @woodtickgreg6926  Рік тому

      It's possible, maybe like a moped license, dunno. Would be kind of a shame if that happened though because it would force all the ebikes out onto the road where the motorist don't want us, that would be unsafe for all.

      @@woodtickgreg6926…. E-bikes can go 40-50mph these days. They belong on the street with motorcycles. I ride a motorcycle and I would never ever expect acceptance to drive on the sidewalk even at 15mph.
      If you’re too afraid to ride in the street. Quit riding it. Stay on your motorcycle. It’s not fair to sidewalk pedestrians

    • @woodtickgreg6926
      @woodtickgreg6926  Рік тому

      @WilliamWBG ebikes that can go 40 to 50 mph are electric motorcycles, not ebikes. My ebike doesn't go anywhere near that fast. And most every ebike rider here rides on the sidewalks because it's safer. There are no bike lanes here and we are to slow to ride in traffic. Ebikes have become extremely popular here and everyone rides on the sidewalk, it's the norm here. Most riders including myself slow down and pedal on the sidewalks and are not riding the bikes at high speeds. It's not a matter of being afraid to ride in the street. I ride motorcycles too. But the drivers here are not tolerant of slow ebikes in the street.

    you need to get comfortable riding in traffic I do I will not get on a sidewalk illegal in Missouri but to many folks stay on the road where you belong. sometimes you got to take the lane specially at lights get in line like everybody else I do daily.

    • @woodtickgreg6926
      @woodtickgreg6926  Рік тому

      I hear what your saying brother. But bikes are just not accepted here in traffic, motorist here do not care. It's not worth dying over. Side roads I will ride in. Here most ebikers ride the sidewalks, it's just safer. I'm comfortable riding in traffic, I ride motorcycles in traffic. But it's just different here for ebikers. As more and more people start riding them it may change, hopefully. But right now you just can't ride in traffic, motorist road rage and don't really care about you. Here it's legal to be on the sidewalks, so I just ride a little slower when I have to be on a sidewalk. Most of my commute is on a 30 mph residential road that is wide enough to share with the motorist. Other roads here are not like that.

    I’m not exaggerating when I tell you that you are extremely lucky he only called you an asshole.
    You need to make sure you have insurance to cover situations like this on your e-bike.
    Many states are requiring the same laws for e-bikes as full blown motorcycles.
    If someone crashed into you and hurt you, you would expect them to pay for all damages and future potential losses and pain and suffering.

Give me a break and quit preaching, it was a minor incident and everyone is OK. I still see him walking and he sees me. It was just a bunch of circumstances that all came together at the right time to cause the incident. I posted this video so that it would make people think about it and maybe it wouldn't happen to them. Not point fingers at anyone or blame anyone. Have you never been in an accident? No one was seriously hurt thankfully. No need for anyone to be sued, get real. He went on his way and went to work and so did I.
