  • The Mop Fly, aka Dust Mop Fly or Wotsit Fly is really simple but can catch a ton of trout, bass, and panfish in a short period of time. The fly is quick and easy to tie and incredibly customizable. Just change up the color of bead, dubbing, or mop chenille and you have hundreds of variations at your disposal. Check out the $$ store in your area for rugs or wash mitts with the chenille whosits.

Thanks a million, Hughie Graves. I only started using these the past season, but they worked so well for me that I tied a couple of boxes in different colors. All the best!

Thanks a million, Hardy. It's a really simple fly but it works on a ton of species. I think those bass you have out east might like them too. All the best!

Hi Darren, here in the UK we call this fly the”Wotsit” as it resembles a snack of the same name, it is tied to the same spec. as your dressing and is deadly on rainbows and blue trout, it’s particularly good in the spring. Thanks for sharing, regards Jimf

Thanks for stopping in, Jim. That makes things clear now as to the name Wotsit. I looked them up and I think they are similar to what we call a Cheesie here in Canada. Cheers and Keep a hook in your vise!

I love this fly! I think I would have that Super Glue all over my fingers though. One question-- do you fish this in tandem with anything else? I would envision fishing this as a single fly on a tight line... like I usually do with perdigons. One more question I guess-- have you ever tied this with weight or a tungsten bead? Nice tie my friend. Thanks for the video!

Hey Matt, thanks for stopping by. Yes, I do get a bit of glue on my finger from time to time, but it's not too bad. I've also used some gel superglue, but I find the brush on soaks the threads and you can completely hide the thread wraps in the mop. I do tie them with tungsten, but I haven't added any shank weight. If I need it, I'll add some spit shot to the leader. I don't fish multiple fly rigs too often but I think this would work well as a point fly with a smaller perdigon tied above. Cheers

Hey Darren! Nice fly - how many years will have to pass before this is called a "classic"? LOL! Love these flies, quick and easy to make and soooo effective! I tie mine on jig hooks with a bead as well (when I want a jigging action) but I often weight the body (lightly, with copper wire) and use bead-chain eyes - find that they sink slower and in more of a horizonal orientation. For fishing "on the drop" in shallow water I use bead-chain eyes and add a turn or two of long webby hackle to slow the decent even more. Just me messing with variations for specific applications, nice to have pattern that the fish like so much to play with. Cheers!

Hi Hank! I think it'll be a while until I could call this classic, but I'm sure that time will creep up before I know it. Thanks for sharing your slow sinking variation. I'll have to try it out next season. Nice to hear from you, cheers
