These AKU boots (wide fit) were the third pair of boots I bought to take on a trip to Nepal last autumn, after trying Scarpa Evo and La Sportiva boots which didn't offer pain free walking. I have wide feet, a high instep, an early bunion and a Morton's neuroma, which makes life very difficult in the boot wearing department. They only arrived about ten days before I left and after seven miles on my first walk here to try them out, I had the familiar deep burning pain in my foot. I was advised to lace the boot from the second or third holes from the toe, and this immediately relieved the pressure. I had absolutely no problem with my feet in Nepal in the AKUs. Incidentally, the new lacing system remedied the problems with the Scarpa and La Sportiva boots too. I now have boot overkill.
That’s great to hear they work well for you too. I find the still pinch my bunions slightly, but a lot better than most boots I’ve tried over the years. Will try your lacing technique too.
I’m big fan of Aku boots and these Trekker Lites certainly look the part. Nice review Robin 👍🏻
I remember our chat before I tested these and you spoke highly of them. 😎 👍🏻
Did you make any followup video? Cusrios to know what's your final thoughts on this boot
I haven't mate, I've started wearing them again with the colder weather. Really can't fault them to be honest. If there was one gripe, if the laces are tied even slightly loose, then they can blister my heels, that might just be me though.
I prefer to feel the ground beneath my feet, and looking at the boots, I think they are more attuned to walking trails than across mountainous terrain. Odd the manufacturers don't provide more detail about them? They look like 2-3 season boots. Wonder how they cope with waterproofness. Good review, though. 👍
Yeah I like a bit of feedback of the trail under my feet too, they're gtx so I expect the waterproofness to be on point. 🥾
Hi, short but informative video, thanks' for that. I have two pairs of AKU, Alterra GTX and and Alterra Lite low cut shoes and they both have medium ( rigid actually) sole, so I'm looking for something more flexible. I'm thinking of Slope GTX, or Slope Micro. Do you have some knowledge or experience of these shoes? There is Slope Original shoe too, but they are maybe too soft ? Thanks' again!
Hi Rade, AKU are pretty new to me so I've only experienced the Trekkers featured in this vid (so far).
How did they get on with boggy / wetness or didn't that happen on your field test? Do they reckon to be water resistant? Thanks for uploading.
Hi Nick, I deliberately tested them in some bog and water. They kept my feet dry. Only caveat is we're still at the initial impressions stage.
It'll be interesting to see how you get on with these and it's the first time I've seen anyone with them for hiking. A lot of the SF guys used to use (and probably still use) the AKU Pilgrim and Spider boots. They're a lot less rigid but obviously do the job they need them for.
Another thing on my watch list for 2023, new boots.
My mate Lee loves his AKU boots. I need to wear them a few more times and see if I can get on with the stiffer soles. 🤔 Might loosen off a bit.
@@WalkWithWallace I'm sure they will over time, they have to give somewhat really.
How many trips have you had them on so far?
@@AScotsmanOutdoors just the one so far, they've been packed away last year and put in storage as we're moving in a couple of weeks.
Interesting review Robin, they look like decent boots. I like the rigid soles similar to my La Sportivas, but these look like they might be a bit more breathable..
Cheers, James
Cheers James, the jury is still out whether or not they suit my feet. Otherwise they're a quality boot and definitely more breathable than what I'm used to.
Dos you think that they would be suitable for warmer weather such as 20/25 celsius?
Yes definitely.
Nice review Robin😁👍..Hope you got that table cleaned 😂..Great edit 👌🏻
Cheers
Robert
Cheers Robert. 😁
Missus hasn't said anything as she's not watched the video. 🤭
@@WalkWithWallace 😉👍
I've been struggling to find a boot which doesn't rip my feet to bits. I've actually changed to trail running shoes and found Salomon to be pretty good. I've had to return to boots for winter walking though. Italian boots are generally very good, although this isn't a brand I've used before.
It can be a pain finding boots you like. I generally find Italian boots too narrow, but these wide ones did the trick.
Aku have a number of wide models . Obviously these ,but also there B2 rated SuperAlp Nubuck . I have both and have yet to use the Super Alps in anger . The trekkers do get more flex over time.
I have Morven on my list for this year, from the bus at Dinnet.
It's a nice hike, shame I didn't get the view.
What boots do you usually wear robin? I got a hole in the side of mines recently and looking for a new pair
My go to boot has been the Keen NXIS Evos. Can't see past them at the moment.
@@WalkWithWallace nice one mate doing Kilimanjaro in December and looking for a good all round boot
@@barryleitch2411 that'll be an amazing experience, often thought about doing that myself. Will you not need crampon compatible boots then?
Crampons are not on the list of equipment/clothing to bring , I thought they would be but watched a lot of UA-cam videos and no one even mentions them
Going boot shopping at the weekend so will keep my eyes out for the keen boots you mentioned
Where do you find the time/holidays for all your walks ! Love the vids mate keep up the good work
Are the Keen an accurate size Robin or did you have to get a bigger boot?
I’m looking at these or pair of lowas .
Not familar with Lowas, but haven't heard anything bad, Aku are excellent imho.
I think boots are very personal item and what works for one might not work for another.
Look a decent boot but again I'd always go in a shop and have a look and try a few on.
I'm also a bit of a creature of habit and will sometimes just go with what i know.
Good wee quick review video but ye look a bit stiff for all round use
You're bang on mate, I'd always recommend trying them on first before committing to the purchase. Even online, wear them around the house for a few days.
I would love to hear recommendations of "buy for life" built like a tank (leather) kind of boots... Struggling to find something that would fit a wide foot!
Think the buy for life kind of days are gone, but Aku are definitely worth a look as they do the wide fit now. Hanwag and Altberg are also good shouts. The latter come in 5 different widths.
@@WalkWithWallace Thanks, I appreciate your reply. 👍🏻
@@rogerfromthemoors you're welcome and good luck finding a suitable pair of boots. It can be a minefield at times.
Have you checked out the Hanwag banks gtx? Made for wider foot, built well, flexible.
@@123ChrisG Thanks, need to find a retailer to try them on somewhere before I buy.
I'm always looking for lighter-weight boots, but even the wider-fit version of these doesn't look wide enough for my feet. A shame, as they look good.
Ah really, you must have really wide feet. They fitted me, albeit just.
@@WalkWithWallace I've always had duck's feet - wide at the front with narrow ankles. I'm surprised they're not webbed!
@@natalieminnis 👣 🦆 😜 bit like me to be honest but I've got mild bunions that protrude a bit. 😳
Nice wee review bud. Look decent boots like. 🥾 but aye, am like you, prefer something a wee bit flexible likesay ken eh.
Cheers Kev. Guid solid boot like, maybe a bit too solid in the sole department.
Look a decent boot , good review mate .. Stevie
Cheers Stevie. 😎 👍🏻
Nice dug !
Cheers John. 🐶 👍🏻
Very nice
Thank you 😎 👍🏻
Got it for free. So if you don't say nice things you won't be getting anything more from AKU for free. Useful for some, useless UA-cam review channel shilling for others. No affiliate link or discount code?
Hi DD, I'm under no obligation to give a positive review. I'm impartial and If I find something I don't like then I'll mention it. The only thing I wasn't keen on was the rigid sole as my personal preference is a more flexible boot. Also worth noting this is a first impressions video.
Sadly I wasn't given any discount codes or links.
