The great maestro delivering a lyrical piece in Nat Bhairav for the BBC in 1984. He also gives an insightful interview. Pt. Anindo Chatterjee plays tabla
His voice is as sweet as his playing... His playing is totally different from other musicians from his gharana...!! Not only me but I think many of Indian Classical Music listeners absolutely love his playing!!! This video, in particular, is absolutely gold mines for all Indian Classican musicians...!!
This is a very well structured interview, with revealing questions from the interviewer. It is so good to hear Panditji's voice, both literally and on the sitar. Thanks for posting this, Josh.
There is no shortcut, practice and only dedicated practice can make a great of a legend.🙏🙏🙏. Pronaam late. pandit ji🙏🙏❤️ And ofcourse the blessings of Guru and goddesses Saraswati ♥️❤️♥️
I think Pt. Nikhil Banerjee's sound is more deep to heart when compared to Pt. Ravishankar; and this is most probably because Ma Annapurna Devi taught him and her students in a more complete way, which I feel Pt. Ravishankar deviated or missed it. #
Having listened to panditji live I may be in the enviable generation you mentioned. However, things remain same, in essence, through generations. If one is aspiring to be artist in panditji's class the road is as difficult as it was in his days. For an amateur, though, things have vastly improved with all these recordings available. In my young days I might have listened to few live performances of these masters but with UA-cam accessible music has grown tens of folds. Just as we notice only very tall trees nearby we think often of the great maestros we no doubt miss. But I am sure there are budding musicians today which can take one high enough that one can learn from the masters of past. So cheer up, you have access to the best of both generations. Best wishes!

He died when I was 1 years old, but he inspires me every day. Truly a great musician. He's the reason I started playing sitar recently!
Absolutely sublime....
The masters playing Raga Nat Bhairav and Raga Bhairavi...beautiful
"90% perspiration, 10% inspiration"
- Pt. Nikhil Banerjee
Pranam..
Practice makes perfect
Thomas Edison also said that. I believe pandit ji took inspiration from that quote.
Those times when TV was actually showing something worth looking at...
Thank you for this upload. As a sitar student, getting to witness his technique was priceless.
his voice is even sweater than his sitar.. and what a great interviewer. Asking such great questions.. Amazing upload.
We thought that too....

It makes me wonder if I should go by the simplicity of Panditji or by his mastery in sitar. In fact he can teach us both
Magic!
Hardly one can comment on it.
One of the finest sitar player of all time. Nikhil babu was a genius.

The influence of Smt. Annapurna Devi Ji is clearly evident in Pandit Ji's playing of the sitar.
Full of love. Just amazing. One of my favourite raags.
Wow what a find. Such a great artiste and human being.

Where can I get the whole Gat? I want more!!!😭
He was a geinus. Died quite prematurely in his 50s only
I would compare him to one of the worlds greatest like Bach , Beethoven, certainly one of the greatest musicians that has ever lived

Nat Bhairav
Is nobody going to address the fact that the interviewer looks like Joaquin Phoenix
No, cause that's irrelevant for people watching these kind of videos
Request you to take the main essence of this video..
Which key is this, what note is sa?
sa is the first note (root note) of any scale.
