What happens if there's an emergency at a homebirth?

One of the biggest questions we get during homebirth consultations, is what happens if something goes wrong? This is such an important question that our Midwives are happy to answer. Midwives bring all sorts of emergency equipment and medications to home births, such as oxygen and medications to treat heavy bleeding. Certified Professional Midwives are specifically trained in the out of hospital situations and have a strength when it comes to handling urgent situations in the home or birth center setting. They are trained to recognize normal and when things require additional care.
Katherine Ward is a Student Certified Professional Midwife, Doula and Licensed Massage Therapist. Sarah Sorvillo, is a Certified Professional Midwife at Heaven Sent Homebirth, a maternity provider in Des Moines, Iowa, where she provides prenatal care, birth options such as homebirth and waterbirth, postpartum and newborn care. This provider also travels to provide homebirth services for the surrounding areas, up to an hour and a half from Des Moines.
At Heaven Sent Homebirth we incorporate our knowledge of herbalism, nutrition and the midwifery model of care to provide natural therapies for women's health issues. Our focus is on the health and wellbeing of women during the childbearing years.
