However i'm confused because of the practice in the end - the schwa is described as "empty" or close to the sound "ö" but then there is schwa in words like "and", "had" & "at" which aren't pronounced like "ö" but more like "ä". I thought a sound like "ä" was marked as "æ" so why is it also sometimes the schwa?
This is because grammatical words like 'and', 'had' and 'at' (= words that make up the grammar but do not carry content) are usually reduced in connected speech to weak forms. Now you are probably wondering, what is a weak form?
