- We travelled to Kuching for the first time to see what East Malaysia is like, it's a nearly a two hour flight away from mainland.
What is Kuching like? Is Kuching and Sarawak like Malaysia? What to do in Kuching? What to eat in Kuching?

Kuching city is less crowded of compared to KL. I love Kuching..people there are very friendly and welcoming
When I first time went to Kuching from Johor Bahru, I feel that city is very quiet and peaceful even city population..very clean city, delicious food and people very friendly compared West Malaysia side. I love Sarawak and their Borneo culture especially Kuching and definitely I'll visit Sarawak more to explore more beautiful places ❤❤❤❤❤
I prefer east Malaysia than west Malaysia, people attitude is different from west Malaysia ❤
It's the peninsular, not mainland..just for your information.
Welcome to my home town. There are many different ethnics here in Sarawak. The largest group is IBAN ( Sea Dayak), Bidayuh ( Land Dayak), Melanau, Kayan/ Kenyah, Orang Ulu n many more. Mostly mix marriages here. You should explore the IBAN longhouses too n many traditional Malay houses across the Sarawak river....
You see, Malays in West Malaysia have Bumiputera status, AND the different ethnics in Sabah and Sarawak also have Bumiputera status as well, even though there’s mix marriage.
@@andresloftNot in sarawak. If you maried Chinese or India ,you children will follow the father status.,if the father is native then they will follow the father as native.
Actually Kuching is not Chinese dominated. The ethnic composition is very balanced. Some areas or districts will have a certain race is the "dominant" race. Btw, unlike the states in West Malaysia, we don't have an official religion in Sarawak. English is a "co-official" language. Many public signages use English.
Good insight, think ti was the area!
South of the river is predominantly Chinese.
agreed

You do know that many of the top positions in the government and GLCs are Muslim/Malay, right?
How GLCs and government positions relate to Kuching? 😂 @RUHappyATM
If you haven't already, you should visit the new Sarawak national museum in Kuching. One of the main features is the history of James Brooke.
Its also the second biggest museum in south east asia
Sir James Brooke was the first Raja of sarawak..he was a British soldier who sail on his boat the Royalist..he came to sarawak on the invitation of the sultan Brunei to fight off pirate and as a thankful gift he gave him sarawak and James Brooke declared himself as the raja but Borneo was land of head hunter..the native were head hunters, cutting their opponents head of others tribe for land and boundaries ..James Brooke stop head hunters ask the native to make peace, he made law and land boundaries ..the native love him but after his dead his nephew Charles Brooke succeed him as the 2nd Raja when Charles died his nephew Vyner Brooke become the 3rd Raja and when the British came they took over sarawak from Vyner Brooke..The local were not happy with the British because they love the Brooke's rule and they murdered Sir Duncan Stewart a British governor of sarawak and the British banish all the Brooke family from sarawak and return to England and they were banned from entering sarawak for a few decades during the british colonial..the British were scare because they local still want the Brooke family back..
A Kuching native here. Great having stumbled on your videos especially after realizing you are both vegetarian like I have been for 24 years. I had my breakfast watching your Kuching and Sibu youtubes. I work in Sibu and come back to Kuching every weekend. I am Indian Malaysian, my dad was a WW2 soldier for the Royal Air Force of Britain fighting in the Burma Front and was later transferred here. As for vegetarian food shops, I go to Baby Fu vegetarian shop and Happy Family in Sibu. In Kuching you can go to Health Food for cheap and healthy food and for a little classy food, try Big Veggie.
I first watched your channel when both of u were stranded here during the Covid lockdown. A few years later, here u are in my hometown and speaking Malay! TQ for dropping by and do make a return visit.
Thanks to you guys for give good reviews about my hometown. I hope you will come back soon for next visited.
Sarawak is the only state in Malaysia where Christians are the majority..This means, Sarawak is more peaceful, more harmonious when compared to other states 👍

Kuching is a lovely place. We were there exactly last year. Wishing to visit again sometime in the future
Hi guys. Welcome to my hometown. Guys the area you went is a Chinese area, padungan.
You want to see more malay go to satok. Also metrocity at matang.
But you want to see more native people, you may go to sri aman or bintulu.
We have lots of nice food especially sarawak laksa and kolok mee. We also have belacan bee hoon. However it's made from prawns.
Once again welcome to the land of hornbill. Sarawak culture village is a place to visit. Use travel agency to do your trip also go to bengoh dam.
Ahhh when we go back I’ll use this, great to know the areas
Kolok mee is nice! We had a vegetarian version!
Thanks for sharing your visit to Sarawak, East Malaysia with us.
If you walk along that riverside waterfront, you can see metal plate on the floor a sneak peak writing of Sarawak's history.
Wow! Impressive, I can hear you learned Malay on the internet, but what app did you use ? Awesome video! New sub! Looking forward to watching the back catalogue! Thanks for your vlog, very interesting place x
Don't anyhow forget to try to meet a popular Dutch UA-camr based in Kuching @GlobalGibbon . I bumped him very first time at Chinatown area when i was travelling to Kuching very first time... I'm one of his subscribers and we took selfie together...great memories of 2022❤❤❤❤❤❤
Wonderful. Thank you for this lovely video and for your exploratioms in Kuching.
There is a theater play about Rajah Brooke in Kuching and it's live on the net, the character Rajah is played by Nick from the Globbal Gibon, a Dutch married to a local Sarawakian lady and been living in Kuching for 10 years. If I'm not mistaken, the play is today.
Oh nice, didn’t know that. Will have a look
@@VeggiesOnTour He, global gibbon, has posted the link on the community in his channel. 😀
There are some amazing places to visit in Sarawak, so hope you get to see some of them, Seeing the Orangutans at Semengoh is a privilage, also an overnight at one of the National parks, for wildlife Bako is great specially if you get to see the Probocis monkies. There are some lovely small towns and villages. I particularly like Lundu, there are some nearby beach resorts to stay in or again there is Gunung Gading NP where it is possible to see the Giant Rafflesia flower. There is also Sematan with various beach resorts at fair prices and you can now go to a small, very small kampung called Telok Melano, a place previously only accessable by boat, it is also mile 0 of the Pan Borneo highway A good vegi option for in Kuching is Zhun San Yen Vegetarian. Opens and closes quite early though.
Some great spots mate, we will definitely travel to Lundu on the next trip. We saw the Gibbons, so nice. Great suggestions
Finally, sitting down after project to watch so many vlogs that I have backlogged....You have always have a flair for old buildings.....reminds me of a person as well.... Haven't been to Kuching yet..... Anyway, you guys are rocking... Malay, English , Mandarin....You are doing just fine , bro!!.. Still enjoy East Malaysia...Cheers!
In Sarawak, you can’t really tell the ethnicity of someone because most of us are mixed. It gets really confusing for us ourselves 😅
i think for people not familiar w sarawakian faces, many dont realise that a lot of ethnic sarawakians look "chinese"
i think it didnt help that u were around padungan where a lot of chinese businesses were set up
kuching is amazing!
sabah and sarawak teaches all Malaysians the reality of Malaysia: that it is not just made of peninsula malaysia or malays
Terima kasih kerana sudi datang ke Kuching....❤❤❤
Welcome to Kuching, glad to watch you enjoying the City of Hornbills. Most of people here understand simple English, it is our's 2nd dialect. Mung beans or 'Lek Tau Sua' is my old time favourite school time snacks (not too sweet, just nice taste), always mix in long bread that cut into small pieces, just like you did in this video. It's nice to know that you did some homework before touring the Kuching town, you're professional travellers.
This is brilliant, i must admit everything looks exotic.I have never visited Malaysia but I hope to one day and your video will be a good guide.
I have really enjoyed the video and hope to see more of your shares so I can enjoy Malaysia thru your lenses
The food court is different from peninsula Malaysia because both Malays and other races can have their stalls in one food court
Hi Patrick and Giulia, glad to see you back on UA-cam after maybe absent for about 3 months.
As usual, this is another interesting vlog to watch. I like the way you tell your experience while walking through the city.
If you don't mind, could you also briefly tell us, where you stay in Kuching and how much cost it. I prefer to have an idea for a budget places. Thanks.
I’ll write this in more detail for you
One major difference is the fact that Muslims and non-muslims can eat together, side-by-side, each eating different dish, at a food court which sells all types of food which is halal to the different ethnic and faith, peacefully. Let's hope PAS continues to be rejected by Bangsa Sarawak
The captions "Different to Malaysia" on your thumbnail is misleading. Kuching, Sarawak is still part of Malaysia. I think you mean West Malaysia or Peninsular Malaysia.
Most people in kuching look like Chinese but the truth is they are from different ethnicity. There are 28 ethnics in sarawak
That would make sense! Either way great city!
Thank you sir visiting Sarawak and for beautiful comment..
I'm from Penang and I was in Kuching last week for a short getaway. I could feel the difference between West (Peninsular) and East Malaysia. The people in East Malaysia (both Sabah and Sarawak) are more friendly. open and simple-minded. There are a lot of different ethnic groups there and I love the unitedness. I wouldn't mind 'migrating' to East Malaysia but it's not easy for people from West Malaysia (Peninsular) to do so :)
I’ve heard! Sarawak are very strict! Sabah not so much I think, right?!
槟城?传说中的小厦门?
please visit borneo culture muzeum.. is not far from that area..
History wise Sarawak has no relation to Peninsular or Sabah. It was ruled by a White Rajah Dynasty for quite some time before WW2
Welcome to kuching, my hometown and enjoying yourself there
I think you need to come again when the annual Rainforest World Music Festival. Usually in June/July. All indie artists around the globe will gather promoting their local musical instruments, besides Sarawak own unique musical instruments as well.
Henry Golding, the main actor in Crazy Rich Asian movie is half Sarawakian.
yesss n "snake eyes" movie
😂 haha, need to rewatch that
Sarawak has more local ethnics tribes..28 ethnicities. The biggest ethnic groups are the Dayaks consisting of the Land Dayaks@Bidayuhs and the Sea Dayaks@Ibans.
Please visit the Sarawak Culture Museum, the biggest in Malaysia and the 2nd biggest in SEA.
Kuching is so AMAZING the FIRST CITY I SPENT in MALAYSIA as MY PARTNER is from Kuching

Awesome ! Happy Journey !
We Borneon usually call West Malaysia with Peninsula Malaysia..not mainland...
Welcome to Kuching
tips for eating sarawak's layer cake is to slice it thinly... then eat
Haha we usually do that but didn’t carry a knife with us 😂🤣
Look at the sky in Kuching bro .. what do you think??😊
Along the Caperter Street... you might come across a shop selling Wood Craft Furniture own by a guy known as Gibbon (a Dutch if not mistaken...he married to a local Iban). Recently he also recorded own song "Anang Malu".
A nice guy. We bumped into him at his wood workshop on Carpenter st when we visited Kuching last year.
Oh wow, he has his own store there. Didn’t know!
Many us Bumi community.. Mixed up with either through marriage or adopted by the Bumi's since baby like myself. That's why many our faces look like Chinese.
Right! Makes a lot of sense! 😂😅
I used to work in the office above Mama Su Kek Lapis, haven't been in Kuching in a awhile because I went back to studying for my degree
Sarawak is huge. If you go to Sri Aman, Batang Ai, you will see a lot of Ibans.
"Different to Malaysia? "
Wot do you mean? Malaysia is a country; Kuching is a town/city in Sarawak Malaysia (East Malaysia).
The main difference is that 50% of Sarawak population embrace Christianity. Kuching has the oldest Anglican church in Asia.
Makes a lot of sense that!
I thought the oldest Anglican church is in penang
@@VeggiesOnTourerr actullay 40% of people of Sarawak embrace Christianity.
As for Malays, they are Muslims.
There are 4 vegetarian cafes, all are in the same row of shops opposite Timberland Private hospital across the road. Another one at Padungan street, near the big white cat and the name of the cafe is the Big Veggie. By the way, my friend saw you at the Indah cafe and Homestay last Thursday.
Yes we’ve been to a couple of them! But that could’ve not been us last Thursday 🤣🙏🏻
I have never seen anyone eat kek lapis like that haha… usually we slice them in small slices… also you are kind of right in the cities usually there are more chinese people… bumis and malays more in the suburbs or countryside… in kuching across the river is a majority malay

Welcome to my hometown, Kuching!
Great city!
Welcome to Sarawak, thankyou for visiting our homeland, pls visit sarawak museum, you can learn alot about sarawak, sarawak famous for kek lapis.
You should come to Bau City (Bau= smelly, named after this word due to the rotting fleshes during war back then). This city is 20min drives from Kuching. Dense with Land Dayak (Bidayuh) people, chinese & malay. You may contact me to tour you around if you wish to visit in the future. ✌️
Welcome to Kuching! The capital itself is populated by chinese ethnic, however the main ethnic group in Sarawak are the indigenous Dayaks which accounts for roughly 80% of the population in the land of Borneo
Thank you for introducing Sarawak
you should go to the waterfront at night it will be more beautiful and many people
9:06 not too sweet but the combination with cakoi it's really addicted 😁😁
U can try go to lepau restaurant or the pinggai cafe for dayak food
Wow luar biasa kucing Malaysia good morning theng you 😮❤
Selamat Datang Ke Kuching... ❤
Wow best video sharing friend greetings know me from sri aman sarawak 👍🙏🙏
Kuching is populated by Malays, Chinese and Dayak. There are many Dayaks in Kuching… you just don’t know which one they are. 😂 You are at a Chinese dominated area so of course you see more Chinese there. And their shops. The Dayaks have started to participate in businesses but their shops aren’t there. If you want to try indigenous dishes, there are a few restaurants that offers them. Around Carpenter street, there’s Pinggai Cafe you can go to.
There’s one restaurant (but a bit in the suburbs - on the way to Samarahan) where I can say you can try indigenous vegetables. They do have some of them mix with some protein though.
We went to a famous one! I forget it’s name. Ate a lot of Dayak food!
@@VeggiesOnTour, could be Lepau Restaurant.
That’s it! We ate there, wanted to video review it, but the service was terrible. We were shocked, couldn’t use it in the end as we were so disappointed.
Still, love the local greens and that local eggplant, very tasty

What is your opinion about lunching safe place. Good food an lots of tourist. Can I get your opinion.

You are wrong Sarawak are populated by The Natives Dayak's and the Malay's , not the Chinese.
Hello.kucing .in fact Sarawak is Malaysia as well...
fun fact that, most East Malaysian face is chinese look. but they are not chinese
Where is the lek tau suan stall Pat?
Kuching is wayyyy cleaner than KL.
But Kuching is also way more car centric. You need a vehicle to live here.
When you say you didn't see many Bumis could it be that you've mistaken the etnic Bumis for Chinese? Bcoz I've been living in KL for 20 yrs & until now, some ppl here still think I'm Chinese. A lot of Sarawakian are multilingual, so many Bumi can actually speaks Mandarin or Hokkien. Most business are monopolized by Chinese. There's an unspoken issue there but nobody really talks about it.
This is exactly spot on! We met a taxi driver while we were there who explained that. Great input 👏🏻🙏🏻
We had so many ethnic@race here..Our Sarawak
Sarawak demography is very different from other states. The main people here are dayak ( which is an umbrella term for iban, bidayuh, kenyah and countless others), next are chinese and then malay. You are in kuching south which is predominantly chinese . North kuching on the other hands are majority malay. Kuching also has minority indian mostly in the south. Nowadays, while north kuching is still predominantly suburb muslim housing, southern kuching has become more diverse from all races. Btw, north kuching is the other side of the river until up to santubong area.
North kuching houses most of the government building (DUN for example which is the iconic building you see on the waterfront). Kuching is only walkable around the waterfront area. It is a very car dependent city. In 2025 however, ART system (which is like LRT) will start its operation connecting the city urban areas.
Hope you guys are having a nice time in kuching!
Very very useful this, when we return to Kuching we’ll head to those areas. Thanks for explaining this

Yes, the Dayaks are the majority in Sarawak but most of the Malays and Dayaks (Bumiputera) are in the rural areas in the kampungs (villages). Why ? Because of Sarawak under British colonial history that policy of "divide and rule" when the British will locate the chinese in the city for economy and business reasons and the Malays and also the Dayak remained in kampungs. So the chinese advanced so much in everything.

I think Sarawak and Sabah are Like Scotland and Wales to the uk ? England ? 😂 sing the same anthemn, share the same currency ( Scotland uses own currency right ?), they have a bit more autonomy and also have specific laws as well unique to themselves.

I have to correct you a bit there. There's no such thing as mainland Malaysia 😂 It's either East or West Msia. 😁 We joined Peninsular to form a Malaysia.

sarawak and sabah and labuan were part of brunei before they were ceded to the british. labuan was directly made a crown colony. sarawak was acquired by a private british colonist sir james brooke who was made raja of sarawak by the sultan of brunei and officially ruled as an indepeendent monarch but was actually backed by london. sabah was ruled by a british company but was actually backed by london. after ww2, sarawak and sabah became direct british crown colonies. in 1963, sarawak and labuan and sabah became independent as members of malaysia.
on another note "Malay" in sarawak and labuan and sabah are not people who came over from peninsular malaysia but ibans who converted to islam centuries ago. same it is with brunei. the sultans of brunei began early in history as iban chiefs.
as for brooke founding kuching, he did not. it was the brunei princes titled abang who ruled sarawak on behalf of the sultans of brunei.
Majority of local Malays & other indigenous people of Sarawak have fair skin compare to those in peninsular, and they easily are mistaken as Chinese.
Malays in Sarawak are Muslims..they wear hijab..clothes cover the whole body..no tattoos on their bodies....very easy to identify which one is Malay or not
Definitely take time to visit the islands over there especially Sabah if you guys are headed there. I love Kuching food and their peppers are great too.

bumi means the earth.. putra means son of.. bumiputra mean the son of the earth or the native.. that does not means the just the Malays.. in fact the local tribal people are also classified as bumiputra.. your pronunciation of bumiputra is perfect first time round.. there's no need to pronounce the ''e''.. your malay is getting very good as the weeks go by.. you should watch lots of very old Malay movies from the 1960s to get to know the real malay culture.. what you have today is what the young generation think is Malay culture.. in fact some people has describes it as bastardise Arab Malay.. all that silly headwrapping has nothing to do with Islam or Malay culture..
Haha I will try the old movies!
may I enlighten here.
If anyone cares to watch old Malay movies ( circa 1950s to 1980s), he will notice insuch movies ,ladies did not wear head cover.
That was just the norm at that time. Ladies ,be they were royals or living in villages, did not wear head cover
Meaning they did not cover their hair as required by Islam.
Covering your aurat( physical part that should not be shown) is a religious requirement. Not an Arabic culture.
May I suggest anyone here to watch old film" Pertabalan yg Dipertuan Agubmng 1957" . He will be able to see even the Queen though dressed really did not cover hear hair
It's amazing. That you didn't have a heatstroke walking around without a hat or umbrella lol
