    If you suspect head gasket, retighten the head bolts.
    Sometimes that is all that is needed Older engines required retightening
    of head and didn't always get it. It can be very useful to do this but make sure engine is cold.

    May I make a suggestion, to find out for sure take off the rocker cover and see if it's milky oil under the cover, also flush the system right through and fit a an overflow. Bottle like they did with the later Robins this seem to fix the over heating problem in later models, also fill up with a strong mix of water and antifreeze, it will run cooler, in hot weather it should run at about 80 - 85 degree normally, also if you have to replace the head gasket, fit the the new gasket Along with Hermite Red, you won't have any problems after that, also make sure all the rad flutes are clear is crap, hope this helps😀

      New head gaskets usually have a pre=applied sealant. DO NOT apply hermatite of any kind. Just fit the gasket dry, refit everything and torque nuts. Run up to temp without any coolant then leave to sit for 24 hours. Then re-torque all bolts as the gasket will have compressed. This works and was relayed to me by a Reliant source. If you use Hermatite it virtually welds the head to the block and it's hard to get off. And yes, the head nuts will need re-tourqing after 24 hours as the gasket really does compress a lot within 24 hours.

    A compression test may help to identify if the head gasket has failed, otherwise it is a case of working through the different elements, is the water pump a serviceable part? That is a video opportunity - great!
    That recovery distance of 10 miles is pants, why would anyone only want a short distance. I have the AA Recovery and have put it to the test several times over the years, my biggest gripe with them is that they take ages to come...
    Thanks for sharing looked like a fun weekend!

    • @StevesMachines
      @StevesMachines  3 роки тому

      I do have a compression tester and plan to use it 😀 My approach is going to be to do a compression test, take out the rad, remove the water pump and inspect it, see where that leads.
      I was rather unimpressed by the breakdown cover, I have raised it with them.

    If the engine boiled then you’ve got a head gasket issue. But you’re better off pulling the lot out and removing the liners and desilting the water jacket. That or get in touch and I’ll help as I have a partially rebuilt engine on the bench.

    Looking like head gasket failure you can see it's pressurising by the air bubbles in the water, ie gasket gone between a cylinder and a water jacket.

      I've been running it lately with only issues on long trips and no water loss at all with a better rad cap. I've got a new rad, thermostat and a few other bits and bobs to change so will follow up soon 👍

    Ive just discovered after paying £164 a year for last 6 years my breakdown cover doesn't cover anything if youre in an accident. (Hit a concrete block someone had put outside their house on a country lane and helpfully painted it black) its deemed as" Driver error ". So ur not covered unless you have the extra cover for it . Hint its not the AA.

    I’ve used that trick of removing thermostat many years ago at the side of a road to get a car going but I’ve since been told that removing thermostat can also cause issues with overheating because of the water flowing all the time not actually taking the heat away.

    • @StevesMachines
      @StevesMachines  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah it only works if it's the thermostat that's the problem. With that being missing I'm guessing it may have been parked up due to heating issues.
      I'll strip off the water pump first just in case it's that.

    Oil in the water isn't a good sign, is it. I'd be gutted after all that hard work, now you've got more work to do. Atleast the weather is better now. I wonder how good your radiator is, could be full of crap or missing cooling fins.

      Once they are sorted they are very reliable, noisy and tiring to drive long distances, I've done the 3hr trek from my place to Birmingham a few times for the NEC no bothers.
      You can get them on 2 wheels with spirited driving.

    Maybe just fit a new water pump and radiator ? I had my MK 2 Robin overheat like that, Fitted a new premium water pump, The one with the steel insert on the output, Not the cast copy one, And a aluminum alloy radiator and it solved the issue, If it is the head gasket though, I have been told it can be replaced without having to remove the engine out of the vehicle, Somebody online said the process for a Reliant 850 cc engine is once the head gasket has been replaced, You run the engine at idle for two minutes with no coolant, When the engine is cold again retorque the head bolts, And don`t adjust them after that

    • @StevesMachines
      @StevesMachines  3 роки тому

      Exactly my thoughts, the water pump will come off first to be inspected.
      I've been told the head can be done in situ but it's not too much more work to drop the engine out so I'll probably do that.
      I'll read up on the head Gasket process 👍

    Not to bad a video again. BUT! there is nothing more annoying than adverts. I can not believe in a 8 minute video, with not many LIKES to it, or even being popular - has 3 adverts placed on it. I wonder if you are being paid for the adverts that are annoyingly added to your videos ? If not, I would try and claim for these adverts. I would ask £1 per advert - times the amount of times your video is being viewed ?
