    Episode Notes:
    1. Captured from the Mega SG.
    2. There is a password system here to resume your game.
    3. I consider the first two to be the best looking of the 16-bit releases. Part 3 played well enough, but its digitized "upgrade" was ugly as sin.
    4. This is also available on the PSP thanks to EA Replay. The Sega Genesis Mini also had it as one of the default games. A Game Boy Color Road Rash II exists as well.
    5. There were 2 very distinct releases of this game in the US. The first was a standard oversized EA yellow tab cart. It also has a budget cardboard release that saw it come on a standard sized cart.

This game is so impressive, like an early GTA! Third person perspective, can walk around the world on foot if you want, or get on your bike and drive. 3D, kinda. And it's all on the Genesis. Always loved it from a technical and gameplay perspective.

Road Rash was a revolutionary game. In addition to being able to walk differently as in a 3D game, there are several other features unique to the 16-bit generation, such as taking down opponents from their vehicles. @@NintenDub To be fair the fact that so many Mega Drive/Genesis games had poor sound/music was down to some developers not being experienced with the system's hardware and/or having strict deadlines to meet. Lazy programming played a part too in some cases, but none of this had anything to do with the hardware itself. Musicians/programmers like Matt Furniss, Yuzo Koshiro, the sound team at EA and Sonic Team based at Sega, all produced music on the system to such a high standard that it's still listened to and celebrated today. The soundtracks to the original Sonic games and the Streets of Rage trilogy being stand out examples.

Great review. I still really enjoy the Road Rash series to this day. I think there never having been a true modern successor (Road Redemption probably closest) means the originals are still great go to games for this kind of arcade racing. As SLX notes though, the choppy frame rate seems much more noticeable these days than I found it at the time. With that in mind could you advise what settings and emulator you used for the 150% in your video please SLX? It seemed massively better than it runs on normal hardware/speed.

Road Rash II was the first of the Road Rash games that I played. I totally loved this game, especially playing against my younger brother. I bought the first Road Rash game after getting part 2, & felt like it was a step back considering that you wrecked when your bike ran out of health (I still like part 1's music best). In part 2, you could keep running as long as you didn't run back to your wrecked bike or get busted by the cops. One thing that would have made this game just a little bit better would have been to steal an opponent's bike if you were close enough to where their bike was. I also loved the animated cutscenes that happened when you lost a race, won a race, wrecked, got busted,, or completed a level. I especially liked the animation that showed a cop throwing you in their trunk after arresting you.

Hey man, to go along with the road Rash videos, you should do a video on Lotus Turbo Challenge series for the mega drive. Here in the UK, all my friends and family back in the day considered that to be sort of a sister series to the Road Rash series, cos they were both published by EA and looked and played similar, and came in those weird cartridges with the yellow bit on them, and had more of that great music that the Road Rash series had. Me and my cousins would swap games periodically, so that they got our Lotus Turbo Challenge cartridge and we got their road Rash cartridge.
Lotus Turbo Challenge was one of those games that EVERYONE had, in the UK. Like how everyone had James Pond II, and Strider. I honestly never heard of Outrun back then. Although I was very young, only like 6 years old. But it's almost like Lotus Turbo Challenge is just Outrun but with more European weather. Lots of rain and snow and stuff in the game instead of sunny beaches. Some levels even had obstacles caused by the weather, like fallen tree logs across the track that you could use as a sort of ramp to jump in the air, or big patches of water or ice that you had to dodge. But yeah, I don't know if Outrun was just not as big a deal in the UK or whether I was too young to know about it cos I wasn't reading gaming magazines at the time yet. But everyone had Lotus Turbo Challenge, and nobody had Outrun. It's weird how stuff like that happens. The US gets very different games that are the popular ones, compared to what was popular in the UK. Like James Pond II, it was as big as Mario over here, but I rarely hear Americans talking about it. Over here, the mega drive outsold the SNES, just like how the Master System outsold the NES, so we just had a sort of alternate universe going on over here lol
Lotus Turbo Challenge was the only game our parents would ever play, too, cos they knew how to drive real cars and so they thought they'd be better at it than we were. And they were right, they were better at it. Though me and my siblings were too young to be good at any game yet
I sometimes go listen to the soundtrack of Lotus Turbo Challenge. And when I've emulated the game before when I'm with my sisters and other family members, all of whom quit gaming 25 years ago while I carried on, they STILL remember that music when I start playing it. You can never forget a good tune

Road Rash II was my introduction into the series and pretty much the Genesis as well. When I first got my Genesis Model II packaged with Sonic Spinball. Road Rash II was a must have. I played vigorously off and on for a month or so and beat the game. It was tough, but I was determined to do it. Then when I saw Road Rash on the 3DO and PlayStation. My mind was yet blown again.

Yeh yeh, the new nitro bikes, split screen 2-player mode, victory/failure cut scenes are good and all. But the best new feature was finally being able to knock the cops off their bikes ;)

I'd love an "updated" version of this masterpiece, with extra frames of animation, 60fps, same graphics - just more of it, extra play modes, extra tracks of possible, more cloud and background layers with that awesome Genesis dithering. Not interested in a 3d version, i just want 16bit 2d style graphics with tons of frames of smooth animation and parallax scrolling. Seems like a no brainier to me and an easy update on 16bit racing / combat perfection. Imagine if it was included on the Genesis 2 mini, obviously the game being updated will probably never happen but I'm just wishing out loud.

The game that made me want to have a motorcycle!
For me, this is the best Road Rash on the system. The Diablo 1000 N was always my end game bike.
I also loved the jumps in this game. Hit a stone on the side of a hill at the right moment and your bike will jump so high it legit disappears off screen for a few moments haha! Amazing stuff!

Road Rash 2 was my intro to the series. I picked up the first game months later, and was very surprised by the reduced quality and cartoony art style. However, I agree that the music of the first one is much better.
I still play both of these to this day - they're my go-to "chill out" games when I have a good half hour to kill.

As a kid I learned the password system and figured out how to make my own passwords.
My favorite thing to do was start a new game, do the Wild Thing code (up+A+C+Start) and all I had to do was change the first two characters in the password from "01" to "8P" and I would have almost $200,000 in the bank to buy any bike I wanted, or I could keep the Wild Thing and go gonzo.

    • @cheesebone82
      @cheesebone82 3 роки тому

Also, the 5th character is the level you're playing on, the 6th is your bike, the 7th is determines which tracks you've completed, and the 8th is a checksum. The first 4 characters determine your money.
So, like 8PC8 5VNE would be a shitload of money on level 5 with the wild thing, all tracks but one (I think Arizona) completed.

R 2 one of my all time favorite games. I can't remember which stage it was, but if you bought the Diablo N, and moved all the way to the left side of the stage (of of the road), you could literally bounce off of the rocks/shrubs/tumbleweeds(can't remember which) for most of the stage before being knocked down.
I got so used to that game I used to beat it on a regular basis (long ago).
    Good times!

Road Rash II had more polished gameplay than the first, IMO. The first one's handling was very slippery and made for a more frustrating experience. Road Rash II is also tough as nails, but somehow feels a bit more fair. They're both incredible, but I always think the 2nd more a bit more refined. =)

I don't think I've ever gone more than a year of not playing Road Rash II, since I got it when it was new. Play with the Wild Thing 2000 for that extreme speed and difficulty. That black beauty separates the boys from the men. At the title screen hold Up, A, and C, and press Start. If you hear, "YEAH!" Then you did it right.

One of the biggest Nintendonts on the Sega Genesis, the Road Rash Series!
Road Rash was a huge part of why I bought the Sega Genesis, it blew me away when I saw it for the first time, I didn't get that kind of graphics and gameplay on the NES. Road Rash 2 was sent by my uncle by mail in a gift. I still play it, I finished road Rash 1 but did not finish this one.
One of the main differences are that you can battle cops in this game. The 2 player split screen is included (however, it does feel a bit choppy, but it is still playable nonetheless). The Music felt better in the Original, I agree.
Overall, one of the best games on the Sega Genesis, Road Rash 3 graphics are not as sharp as Rosd Rash 1 and 2.

I remember renting this at the local grocery store for a weekend. I laughed so hard when my siblings figured out that you could run down the road after being knocked off of your bike. I still remember my brother getting mad at me for doing it so much. The theme song is stuck in my head.
