    28 years later this is still good. There are very few artists whose music transcends time. Meshell Ndegeocello is one of these artists.

    Oh yeah. So glad I saw her way back when she was funkin it up even more than this. And, playing alot more bass. She always had another bassist but she definitely played alot more. This is great but way more jazzy than the original FUNKY version.

    Where Mr Mayer@..he groove meaner...hit that snare hard as u can man next time please!

    • @FedericoGPena
      @FedericoGPena 2 роки тому +1

      So you're going to hold it against Gene that one little snare hit got away from him, in a moment of certain disconcert where he clearly appeared to be distracted by something that was happening in his periphery!!?? Ok man....Gene is only one of the best to ever sit behind a kit; if you don't believe me, ask your "groove master" next time you see him....In addition, if you cneck Meshell's body language and overall expression, you might realize she extended the intro/groove JUST BECAUSE it felt so good to her....but you're going to shed light on our aesthetic sensibilities and musical intention(s)....Sure.
      I'll tell you a funny story: around this time - it was actually a year later while touring Europe again - we roll up on Mike Stern's soundcheck at Montreux and Dave Weckl was on drums; as we get "in his periphery" he senses us and turns around slowly, when he realized it was Gene who was "checking him out" the very next hit on his snare was a real "clinker", way worse than this one!! He was well aware of who was standing in the wings. Are we gonna say Weckl sucks now?? I've seen world class drummers sit behind Gene's kit (during soundchecks) admiring his work, from Carter Beauford to Bill Brufford, Vinnie Colaiuta to Manu Katché, Dennis Chambers and everyone in between. Ask any of these cats and they'll testify.
      Being a great musician, Meshell understands vibes and dynamics; she didn't [and doesn't] like cats "hittin' the snare as hard as they can" all the time; if you know anything about a band's dynamics, then you know that it doesn't always have to be "balls out": one can groove to death while lettin' it simmer....the whole momentum of the rhythm and the band was being set up when this moment happened, and that's not only as it pertains to this tune but also in the context of an entire show, and entire performance.....you want the whole set to have an arc, much in the way one might craft an [arc] into a solo or single composition. Sometimes you just wanna let it simmer for a while man....You understand cooking, or sex, no?? Well, this is no different.
      Maybe next time think a bit before leaving such a crass and reductive comment; but hey, it's the UA-cam Comments section, where anything goes. It's been five years, but I hope this nugget of insight reaches you.
