Bugfixes in the comments since I left them out of the intro:
-Crash related to clay pit demolishing
-Undesired flowering on trees when looked from afar
-Demolished village houses didn’t take care of their bushes
-Junk reserves stayed in market stalls preventing demolishing them
-A few minor UI corrections
-Horses produced cow hides when slaughtered
-Slow saved game load on Intel/AMD GPUs
-Potentially fixed issues with false-inaccessible stone deposits
-Crash after destroying a mining cart
-People could get stuck in an endless gardening loop
-Crash related to farms
-Endless deliveries of
Taverners didn’t pay wealth tax - so that’s why they were hoarding so much money!
You can improve the performance at the beginning by scattering more benches around your work area so they can rest closer, thus reducing their walk distance. Also, don't hire more then 1 at the thatchery in the beginning, you have enough for 9 houses and 1 worker can max out thatchery , you save on paying wages.
Glad to see Ostriv highlighted, this project is close to my heart 🥰
It's been my favorite game ever since I started playing during Alpha 3 in 2020!
Re 41:33 it's actually a historically accurate thing to do, almost every Ukrainian house had a bench in front of it, where old grannies would sit. socialize and surveil the area
I just bought the game yesterday after previously watching your Alpha 4 content and then seeing the recent Alpha 5 huge update. I bought the game, soundtrack and Patron of the Arts, I think as much to play this game which looks wonderful, but also to support the devs in their fight, literally, to produce the best possible game they can, in a war zone. Support and prayers to them. Thanks for the great content JC. I've followed you on Twitch and will try to jump in a stream now and again. Wonderful content, thank you!
Thanks so much, and congratulations on one of the best gaming purchases you'll ever make. I can't promise how often I'll be able to stream on Twitch, but I _am_ currently trying to stream every Sunday here on UA-cam (currently Cities: Skylines) and would love to see you there!
Ostriv should add a 1/16th speed mode. Would love to just let the sim run as desktop background, very chill-like.
I'd honestly be surprised if someone hasn't already made some clips for Wallpaper Engine by this point.
Absolutely love the “desire paths” that are made over time from people walking on them!
One of my favorite features of the game, for sure.
Okay, I'd never heard of Ostriv and you were in the middle of it anyway when I found your Timberborn videos, so I didn't feel like jumping in. But now I'm caught up on the other content and UA-cam recommended me to check this out, and DAMN, it looks like SUCH a great game!! :)
It is an AMAZING game! I absolutely love it, and I think that it's genuinely the best city builder I've ever played. Unfortunately it seems to reach a "cap" of stuff to do pretty early on compared to, say, Timberborn, but it is still in development so I trust that more complexities and things to do will come in due time.
One of my favourite games to chill out and play!
I built houses for years. It is beautiful. I could watch the builders alone for hours on end tirelessly.
I programmed CNC's for a year, as well. So, I can truelly appreciate the details.
It is tedious, ocd-related fun, but so pleasing to see the final process do what you intended.
It really is amazing. All the little parts coming together, the tiny details in the plans emerging as construction progresses... That's my kind of happy place. Thanks for watching!
Excited for this!! Thanks for picking this series back up 🤗
Haha glad you now you're audience to know that we love the long videos.
And glad that you're not making it too grid-y! You've gotten very skilled at this game
I appreciate the support! And yeah, the grid is a very, very hard thing to break out of. It's a conscious daily effort in self-control not to go back 😂
I’m happy to watch your new video. Haven’t seen them in recommendations for a while.
Glad it popped up after I watched Alpha 5 video on the Ostriv channel.😊
So excited about all these new buildings and other updates.
Welcome back! I appreciate the support 😄
i dont stress too much if a family or 2 moves out bc people will move in after the house is complete and sometimes its a bigger family with a few grown children
Yeah, it's just frustrating to lose the settlers is all. Especially how close we were to keeping all nine families.
@@JCTheBeard It was the well that did you in. You even said you didn't want to build it right away so why didn't you move it to the end of the queue after you added those last three houses?
Great video, I was tracking along with your build. I created pretty much the same town so far. Like you people moved out before I go the last house built. But I did have jobs posted and another family came right back in. I always sink my boat in this game with economy. So I need the help to build a successful city. Thaks for taking the time to really go through it.
Ostriv's economy can be hard to balance, and I know for sure that I'm far from great at it. I kind of end up brute forcing it by sheer volume after a certain point. Good luck with yours, and thanks very much for watching!
Didn't see it in the comments, so: did you know that a basic camp spawns with a supply of thatch big enough for 9 houses?)) I actually was surprised when discoverd I don't need to build thatchery right from the start.
P.S. Thanks for playthrough, I love seeing my favorite games on UA-cam.
I _should_ have remembered, yes. Unfortunately I had my blinders on and focused on trying to minmax the start, which obviously didn't go well. Thanks for watching!
I love how realistic this game is and game play. I worry if water mechanics would be a thing. Some houses down hill would flood.😅 septic going into the downhill well. Stuff like that would make this game even more amazing! Thank you for sharing this game.
Fortunately, water mechanics don't seem to exist in game ....yet. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this presentation. This game is fantastic!
It's a wonderful game! Thanks for watching 😁
Thank you for this Let´s play. This i high quality gameplay/let´s play.
This is Great good job, really nice flow to the video and beautiful town designs.
Thanks very much!
@@JCTheBeard Your'e welcome thanks for making nice content. Very inspiring.
Just started playing this brilliant game. Probably one of the most challenging city builders, especially in the beginning. Also just started watching this letsplay :)
I've just started a new map too so I'll be interested in following along here to see how it goes for you. (Love this game, one of my favourites for sure).
Here's to a successful playthrough!
Thx. Great video, great start into a new village! 👍
While watching, I play in parallel. Great way to learn the game. It has sooo much too offer, so many production lines, so many different mechanics, so it's difficult to get into the game on your own only.
Glad to have you on board! I can't promise that my gameplay is error-free, but I'll do my best.
I can see that as the people walked the same path for a long time, you can see the grass where they walked on will slowly disappear turning to a natural mud path.
Thank you for the video. It's so fun watching the villagers construct and build. What a nice game which shows so much details. :) It's amazing.
This game is amazing! Thanks for watching 😁
Hi new to your channel..thx so much for taking the time to explain game for nubies like me...looking forward to following the creation of your Town
Glad to have you! Hopefully it's informative and entertaining for you 😄
I'm not the greatest Ostriv player in the world and I will make a lot of mistakes, but I think that's part of the fun of authentically experiencing the game.
Great help in helping to get started. Just got Ostriv yesterday. Considering this is developed in a country at war, it's impressive. I believe Game Labs is in Ukraine also (Ultimate General, Ultimate Admiral series).
One thing I note, just like building a farm ahead of time and early, think it might be good to also build 2 charcoal pits - it gives women jobs.
Also, watching PatmosIV's Alpha 5 series as well.
Guessing there is a benefit to building archways and bushes - effects like in Pharaoh. Just picked up the update of that recently as well. This is quite a bit more sophisticated than Banished.
I like the cultural tone/specialization, subdued design style to this - certainly going to learn a lot of Ukrainian names. The world map can't help but remind of the world of Shadow and Stone.
I don't think there's any actual effect given by the decorative stuff, but it does look nice!
The cultural authenticity of Ostriv is extremely impressive - I'll admit that I'm not very knowledgeable about Ukraine or her history, but whenever I've looked up historical photos or read about different things the game depicts, it's been spot-on.
Thanks for watching! Hope you enjoy the game 😄
Приємної гри. Надіюсь,тобі сподобається наша гра
I love Ostriv with my entire heart. Thank you for watching 😁
@@JCTheBeard Thank you for your video ☺️. You helping ukrainian game market 😌
I just build in a certain order, the forestry, the clay pit then a few houses. I build the thatchery after May so the houses that are built can put their gardens in that year. Then I build all the houses and once they are done I build other things. I never have lost families this way. After this, I build the farm to have it ready next season then the smithy then the carpenter and so on. If you do it in a certain order it works well.
Just seeing this upload made me like the video!
Ostriv is back and I’m back!!!!!! JC the Beard? More like JC Bob Ross!!!
My man! Welcome back!!
love this game. Love the channel as well.
Thanks for being here 😄
So glad Ostrich is back!
A welcome return, indeed.
Despite having only watched a small number of your previous Ostriv series, I was a bit excited by the decision to abandon the grid. I'd love to explain why this excited me, but tbh I don't know why. It just did.
Sometimes I am in favor of building ruthlessly efficient cities in city builder games, but I also appreciate cities that emphasize aesthetics in consideration of imagining the quality of life of the sims, and I feel like this particular map is especially suited to a more aesthetically pleasing, organic-feeling layout.
At 26:35 you built the charcoal burner and said "lets just get in the habit of ticking all of these." If it is the case that those options should be selected by default, why is it that they are not? This is not a rhetorical question, I have no idea and am curious.
I noticed that the game did not hang during the autosaves. Hopefully they have fixed the issue and you can begin to heal from your autosave-crash PTSD that still haunts you while playing Timberborn.
If there is ever a city-builder to abandon the grid with, it's Ostriv. This game is just too beautiful and detail oriented to shackle it with squares everywhere.
Regarding the options not being ticked, I'm not sure why they aren't all set to "on" by default. It really would make more sense for that to be the case. Maybe I'll ask when I submit a bug report in a bit.
Thanks as always for watching! Glad to have you on board for this series!
Not sure the kind of symmetrical grid based cities many people aim for in games like Cities Skylines really are that efficient. They tend to end up... grid locked.
I was able to get 3 houses with fields and a farm built in time for planting. Build the thatchery close to the houses so the men don't have to walk as far. The women walking far doesn't slow down house construction.
Great vid. Have you considered covering Workers and Resources? Great game, a lot like this one.
It's been suggested a lot, actually. Probably pretty high on my list of future videos series once I have the time.
a new detail you missed, it displayed what was being sold ontop of the market stall either that or it was like family crests, but it never showed anything like that before
The market stall contents have been a thing for a while, at least several small updates back. I typically play with those off. Are you thinking of the rework in Alpha 5 for family lineages and inheritance?
@@JCTheBeard no litturally ontop of the stall you can visually see on the cloth roof some kinda emblems i never noticed them before
Wow!🎉
I love this game but I have not received any free upgrades since #3. One piece of advice I have is that when you are looking around the map press pause!
You should be able to download the latest version, no matter how you purchased it. Did you buy it from the game website? I think it wasn't released to Steam until around Alpha 3.
Yes I bought version-1 from the website and included a "tip" as well. My email hasn't changed so I'm wondering if maybe they lost their list. I don't want to push the issue as things can't be easy in Ukraine right now. @@JCTheBeard
nice new ostriv update!!
Lots of great stuff to be excited about for sure!
Wow , lets go 😎😎
😎
this might finally be the actual banished successor!
That's been a label attached to Ostriv for quite some time, and while I'm not sure it's a 100% match, there are definitely a lot of similar elements.
I volunteer to work the smithy. ⚒️
Your shift starts tomorrow at 10:30am EDT, when episode 2 goes up and the smithy gets constructed 😂
@@JCTheBeard nice. I hadn't seen this game and was waiting for you to start a new one. It's pretty cool and very well detailed. Just watching the paths turn into trails was great. Looking forward to what you do tomorrow!
OO yes i saw tha game and than i lost it!!!
thanks
This is haunting.
This game is the greatest. thanks so much for covering it and taking time to admire the details. These guys or guy is amazing . Slava Ukraini
Thanks for watching! The team behind this game is a small indie effort that started as the work of one guy in Kharkiv, Ukraine almost a decade ago.
I hope the next progress of this game is to have bigger map.
I don't think it needs to be a bigger map so much as it needs to be a bit more resource-dense. There's already plenty of space for building 😎
I can't log into the Ostriv website! I paid for the original game three years ago and have not been able to upgrade. So today I tried to buy version five but was unable to enter my email address. What is going on?
Traveling distances of construction workers are way too long as for the start of the game. That's why you didn't manage to finish the houses in time. I do blocks really compact so by the end of winter I have at least 10 populated houses, some kind of a market and a farm ready to work.
I'll typically group everything really tight too. This new map isn't exactly set up for that, unfortunately. Oh well, live and learn!
No sound to hear them build houses?
im not understanding the market products price for the treasury not sure what increasing and decreasing does
You and me both, man. I have, at best, a nebulous understanding of this game's economy even after hundreds and hundreds of hours 🤣🤣
Sry for the last house, you should made the well after 9 houses.
Thanks for support Ukrainian developers. He`s from Kharkiv.
Seeing his posts of the devastation on Twitter is heartbreaking, but his resolve is inspiring and the continued work he's done to help his countrymen through humanitarian aid is as well.
Waiting for new episodes
Next one drops in just over 4 hours from now!
I think its kind of funny that they released a DLC for a game that is still in Alpha and not technically released yet in early access.
Maybe my memory is off but doesn't the carpentry shop require parts from the Smithy to fix the carts? Been a while since i played myself.
It sure does! They need the metal parts that the smithy produces, and we'll solve that in episode 2.
Why houses no on grid?
👍
The quitters didn't disappear, they were eaten by wolves after dying of exposure in the forest. Darwin rules!
And to think all they had to do was wait another fifteen seconds and they could have had a nice 3 bedroom house on half an acre, spitting distance from work. What a shame!
I have two queations. I can't seem to hire a farm manager no matter what I tried. I freed some man, some woman. No one showed up. Second queatikn is, I don't have a "Next year" planting thing. I can chose only one thing to plant. I am playing 5.7.1 version.
Have you tried Workers and Resources:Soviet Republic yet?
I haven't but that seems right up my alley. Perhaps in the future!
Yo. Is this game made by those guys who designed Soviet Republic?
Looks very familiar to me
No, it's a completely independent game started by a Ukrainian solo developer around a decade ago. He now has a small team that works with him but it's still very much an indie effort focused on quality over speed.
Dude, Smetana is literally Sour Cream, there is no other translations. You do not have to clarify anything, Sour Cream is the same product everywhere. The fact that some regions of the world used to have different percentages of fat in product doesn't change the nature of product at al..
why not put a iron mine in right away?
Manpower is insufficient at the start to support it. You're much better off importing the iron and using two men at the trading post (who can also import and export everything else at the same time) than to have a guy dedicated solely to mining and another dedicated solely to smelting.
Can you play goblin of elderstone
Does this game do terraforming?
Theoretically it doesn't, but you can get it to do some small adjustments to terrain height while placing bridges. It rarely ends up being a "good" adjustment, though. 🤣
I cant build 8 houses fast enough before winter and I end up losing people cause they leave.
Restart again and again until there is most starting population.
Don't continue if you have less starting population
коротко о том что мне попалось пока я искал шима
Чудова гра ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
Слава Україні🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦
Героям слава!
Just a quick question about the workforce for this game. Is the restriction of not hiring women for some jobs part of the game, or is it personal beliefs? If part of the game, that somewhat disappoints me, but otherwise this game has come a long way since I first played it when the dev gave me access to the first builds.
It's part of the game. Ostriv is a period piece set in 18th century Ukraine, after all, and there is historical context for men and women doing different jobs - even though we as a society recognize now that labor should not be gendered or restricted as such, it's authentic to the time period. Recently the game was updated to allow older teenagers to do certain jobs, whereas prior to that nobody could work at all until they were 18 in game.
Personally, I'd rather there be no restrictions whatsoever both out of concern for equality and ease of playing the game. But it is what it is. Once your town gets large enough the male or female-only jobs tend to balance out, and the generic "laborer" positions don't discriminate based on gender so it ends up being fine.
It's strange that you get kind of offended by the fact that in the 18th century in Ukraine women were not allowed to work on production where workers had to lift heavy objects or work too hard during a long period. It was a very practical rule at that time, cause women were supposed to give birth to kids and medicine was on a low level. If you were a young woman, who due to her health problems could not have kids, that was a real calamity for the family. Such were the times.
LOL
Why didn't you move the well to the end after you placed down all the houses? If you had done that then they would have built that last house in time and those two people that left would not think the player is a ... but no you had to be a typical youtuber and not bother to look at the build icons in the upper right of the screen and don't say you didn't know about them because they have been there since alpha 1. 😁
This here is what destroys most of these games with the huge micromanagement of everything and yet they say this is like the game Banished, no it is not. Yes, banished had issue of things that could have made this game very fun like wild wolfs could have been added and over time enemy in campmates to take out to give it a little spice but adding this garbage like sickness to baby sit and food issue that only work if they have a food bar over the building showing it going bad but having to check everything just take away from just having fun an interacting with things that could make the game great. WHATEVER!
Less gushing and more comments on game play
Ostriv = Island (translated from Ukranian)
Why cant the women be forestry workers or such? Why are they limited to Farms and Thatchery?
Historical accuracy depicting a time when women were expected to raise children and not perform certain types of manual labor. A reply to another comment addressed it a bit better than I can, actually.

What a buggy mess this game is still after all this time.
This video is well over a year old, to be perfectly fair. It was recorded the same day this new update dropped.
@@JCTheBeard Indeed. I should have instead said that the game was very buggy on my side. Don't get me wrong, the game looks great, but surely most bugs should have been fixed by now after more than 4 years since it's been in early access.
