  • Passing the De La Riva Guard is one of the most important skill sets in passing the guard. It is probably the easiest guard for someone to establish and therefore the most important to know how to pass.
    The purpose of this video is to define the main pass options you have in the position so you know what to consider when deciding how to deal with the position. Part 2 of this series will cover the ways your opponent can control you with varying grip variations and help guide you to choose the best pass choice.
    List of Passes from Video
    Knee Cut, Shin Slide, Leg Drag, Reverse Leg Drag, Leg Trap(Stuff), Folding Pass, DLR Side Knee Smash, Stack Pass, Kick the Grip off Ankle.

    Hello, i want to thank you for your great teaching abilities, it is clear, concise and very helpful.
    I feel like jiu jitsu is similar to mathematics, you don't learn to solve equations by having the answer to some of them, you have to understand the concept of solving a problem so you can manipulate an equation at ease and find the solution in every situation. In class, learning a single technique may feel like having one answer, it's only seeing the small picture in a very complex context. Explaining positions and giving overviews of what's happening really helps a lot, I am very glad to follow your teaching online.

    Can you make more videos about your collar guard? Go to attacks, sequences, and other details. I think it would be a good foundation for an open guard game.

    De La Riva passing video, me: "oh man, time to watch Leandro crush a bunch of peoples' dreams..." Do you ever watch BJJScout, Jon? He (they?) has a good video series on Lo's passing and this just reminded me.

    Thoughts when they have the pant grip vs ankle grip?

    • @JonThomasBJJ
      @JonThomasBJJ  5 років тому

      Piroebassman44 will cover in depth on part 2 of the series. It’s pretty similar with a few small variants. When you have pant grip you can also push their ankle away because you control the pants when you have the ankle, you can only pull on it but never push.

      JonThomasBJJ we’re talking about the DLR guard player, right? I know I like to play DLR with the pant grip instead of ankle, allows me to set up Lo-guard, helps shut down knee cut (to an extent), etc. I look forward to your next vid and love your stuff!
