I know it’s “natural” to get excited before/during a shot at a bull, but keeping your calm until AFTER your shot is key! My first elk hunt in 1998 on the very first day of my elk hunt at 8 AM I saw a big bull coming in at over 200 yards. I started shaking uncontrollably.. he went out of sight on a bench above me and I closed my eyes and said to myself “XXXXXXXX (my last name) you’re going to remember this for the rest of your life, good or bad, so make it a good memory”… I also said a little prayer. I opened my eyes and was DEAD CALM!!! I mean it’s 23 years later now and I’m more excited now than I was after I opened my eyes after shaking uncontrollably. That’s the honest to Gods truth! The bull was coming right at me, I avoided eye contact with him (animal’s sense when you’re looking at them).. I keep my eyes on his rear leg. He stopped at 10 yards and stood there looking right through me for at least 6-8 MINUTES. I had my recurve at my side and was DEAD CALM. He finally turned to my left and started walking by me at 6 yards. I drew and shot him and had a complete pass through and he piled up 60 yards away!!!! THEN I was shaking uncontrollably!!! My point is you have all the time in the world to be excited AFTER the shot. Sports spychologists train athletes to mentally visual it before they do it. World class athletes have done it millions of times in their minds before they do it physically. It’s the same way for hunting. When you lay down at night to go to sleep run the scenario through your mind over and over and over. The bull coming in, picking a spot, hitting your anchor point (for compound shooters putting the pin on your spot) and a smooth release and follow through. When it’s been played thousands of times in your mind it will be automatic when it happens in the field.
Wow! That was killer, thanks to both of you. You both nailed some stuff that made sense. Paul, you really got me my first bull I called in and killed. I had called in quite a few prior just never been able to finish. I killed a bull prior, just didn't call it in. I had just listened to your podcast the night prior about the attention grunt. So, on December 5th I had a bull give an attention grunt, I did a variation of what you talked about on the podcast and with the Mavric from Phelps game calls, I called him in and killed him. I wasn't trying to call him in when he hit with the attention grunt so the setup could have been better, it happened way too fast but he gave a 70-yard shot and I pulled it off. I also got my elk this year by thinking about it like that and have developed a teneque that I don't call them in with but a way I make them go where I want them to go, so I can cut them off later, no calls after I get them to go. Late season stuff. It takes some miles but works. I still haven't got good enuff to pull off the early season call-in and finish. Thanks, both of you for some more key info.

When u guys talk about the situation I was in several different times this year and didn't get a connection for my buddy. Makes me happy knowing I'm on the rite track tho. Got there rutting zone found. It's two bulls down September 2021!!! God bless u guys and stay safe

Congrats on your cow. You certainly can get back out there and expirement/learn. Yess bulls will come in and run you over if you make the right sounds.
