The number you wear is your position, so whoever is playing on the left wing will wear number 11. There were a cople of New Zealand number 11s in the video, the main one being Jonah Lomu who was an absolute monster - one of the biggest guys on the field, and one of the quickest, at the same time. The quickest players generally play on the wings (11 and 14) and they tend to finish off running moves.
Players are divided into 8 forwards and 7 backs. The forwards are the big strong guys who compete for the ball at close quarters, the backs are the guys who do most of the running, passing and kicking. The saying is, who wins is decided by the forwards, and the backs decide by how much. Or alternatively, the backs are there to get the ball forward, the forwards are there to get the ball back.
The reason why the player you mentioned didn't touch the ball down immediately is the conversion kick is taken from a point in line with where the try was scored. If you score in between the posts, you kick the conversion from in front of the posts, but if you score in the corner you have to take the conversion from the sideline, which is a much more difficult kick, so players will try and touch it down closer to the middle if they can.

Very perceptive reaction! Almost all your guesses and conjectures are in the ballpark. I'll point out only one thing today. Remember that guy who crossed the tryline and kept running? You wondered aloud why he didn't just put the ball down immediately. That's because, after the try, the team gets a kick at goal for two extra points. The kick has to be taken from a point perpendicular to where the ball was touched down-so if the try scorer can manage to do so, he'll score as close as possible to the center of the field to make the kick easier!

Do you realise that your American Football was derived from Rugby Union? Rugby spread to the USA in the late 1800's via the Ivy league Universities. (Who had copied the English Universities who used Rugby to "strengthen the spirit" of students) Rugby caught on and would have crowds of 40-50,000 attend matches. In the early 1900's, the USA even won two consecutive Olympic Gold medals, winning the Rugby. So USA was very good at the game!)
Some wealthy people in USA, in the late 1800's, saw the potential for Rugby to be a professional game. BUT... those that controlled the world game of Rugby Union wanted to keep it strictly amateur. So, the USA formed their own version of Rugby, calling it Gridiron, with huge changes of rules. That's why a number of terms still used today are the same in American Football as in Rugby. eg Touchdown. The US changed it to be just running the ball past the try line. But Rugby requires the ball to be "touched down" in that try zone. That's why they dive once over the line, to make sure it is "touched down". Oh, then it's called a Try. Later, the name was changed again to be American Football. (In spite of the fact the game is predominally played with the hands and NOT the feet. Throwing/catching etc.)
In England, another group of people wanted to also change from amateur to professional but again the controlling body refused. So they broke away and formed Rugby League. Different game, different rules. Again, in the main, Rugby Union was played by the educated "upper class" and Rugby League played by the "working class". Both versions of the game of Rugby have highly skilled players.

Nice reaction bro, dunno if anyone else has commented this but when a try is scored the “kicker” then gets to take a shot at a “conversion” I.e. kick the ball between the 2 posts. The position from which the kick is taken from is determined by where the try was scored, so at around 14:30 where you said “why didn’t he go down immediately” the player was running closer to the posts to make it easier for the kicker to score.

  • @peadarruane6582
    @peadarruane6582 3 роки тому +3

The place where the try is scored is the position from which the conversion kick is taken. So the more centrally the try can be scored the easier it is for the conversion kick to be made, that is why some players kept running with the ball in the end, to get into a better position.

You can compete for the ball when a player has been tackled but there's specific rules about how. If number 14 just stepped forward and picked it up he'd immediately be penalised for offside. Same as when a linebacker goes over the line of scrimmage before a play starts in the NFL. You can take the ball but you have to enter the ruck from your own side - I.e. you have to be facing the opposition goal line and actually push the defending players off the ball.

A lot of these tries are important due to context, winning important finals, winning the game in the final minutes (or in overtime), so some aren't the most entertaining. Without the context, it's difficult to understand why they're so good.
The guys at the end on the 'wing' would be a combo of wide receiver/cornerback (everyone plays offense and defense). The guys just inside the wing, the centers, would be the closest to a running back. They punch holes to give space to the wingers to score.

Yeah, it's the goal line. In Rugby (and believe it or not, up to the 1960s, it was this way in American football,) a player is not considered down until his forward progression has been stopped. That means he can get up and keep going if he is not held to where the ball stops going forward. The only difference is when the ref has declared him tackled. If so, he must release the grip on the ball, and the tackler must release him. Once they both get to their feet, they can compete for the ball. If he is declared down and then tries to move the ball forward again, that is called a double movement, and it is a penalty. You'll see that more around the goal line when a man is desperate to score and is called down.

Guys will run towards the center of the end zone instead of just touching down immediately to get a better angle for the conversion kick. Unlike football where the conversion is getting the center, rugby conversions are taken perpendicular to where the ball was touched down.

The team has different types of players for different jobs. Shirt numbers show their position on the field. 1 to 8 are forwards. Generally they are big heavy men. Back are from 9 to 15. The game rarely stops. These guys are fit, skillful and all have special skills. Wingers are usually light but incredibly quick. Full backs are usually good kickers, tacklers and quite quick. Agame of two halves, 40 mins each half. Have to touch down the ball in the try area. Where ever the ball is touched down the "extra points" kick goes anywhere in a straight line back and has to be kicked between the posts.

I think what your having trouble grasping is when is the completion of a tackle, ie. A down. Your first breakdown on the first Try, No.14. No.14 is restricted because the game is in a phase of play called a "Ruck". Defence can only attack square to the "Offensive Ruck", cant come from the side until the "Halfback" (Off.) Has their hands on the ball. -Then itll be like a new Run. Repeat.
    Edit
4:19 - Wallaby player trying to score as close to the uprights to the centre of the pitch for placement of FG attempt is posistioned perpindicular to where the try was scored.

Nr. 14 is not allowed to play the ball, reason being is that he would be off side. Once the tackle has been made, the ball has to be put out, so if you are tackled you are also not allowed to hold on to it, that would cause a penalty. You can not play the ball if you're on the ground.
Also if you are kicking the ball forward for your team mates to pick up, they have to be behind your line at the time the ball is kicked, hence they have to run forward or chase, otherwise it would also be off side for a penalty. This is completely opposite from American football as you would know. Hope this helps.

1,2 and 3 are 5’10 tall and the strongest guys on the team
4 and 5 are the tallest guys 6’6” to 6’10
    6,7 and 8 are 6 foot plus
No 9 is the scrum half and the smallest man on the pitch
No 10 is the half back or what you would think of as the quarter back
11 and 14 are the wingers, the fastest players on the pitch along with. No 15
12 and 13 are called the centres, they are the amalgamation of all huge men and quick runners
No 15 the fullback is as fast as the wingers but just better at kicking the ball

When a player is tackled to the ground the player carrying the ball has to immediately release the ball or pass from the ground. The only way you can pick the ball up is if there is no opposite player contesting for the ball and you are on your feet.
If an opposite player is contesting for the ball then this is called a ruck. When contesting the ruck you can only pick up the ball once it has gone past the last feet on your side of the ruck.
No hands are to be used as this will be called a penalty called hands in the ruck. This results in a wrestling match where players try to shunt and push each other off the ball.
You can only enter a ruck from the back of the ruck on your side otherwise if you come in from the side then you are penalised for this. That is why that player watched the ball being played because he was on the side of the ruck and couldn't touch the ball.
Once the ball is past the last boots on your side of the ruck, one of your players can pick up the ball and play on.

    • @filipinorutherford7818

When the ball is tackled or grabbed by an opposition player but doesnt go the ground then this is called a maul. Players on the tackling generally have the first person come to the ball and grab the ball.
The next two teamates put a blocker on each side of the ball carrier so their bodies are physically in the way of the opposition so they can't get to the ball. The defenders are trying to slow the momentum of the ball carrier, trying to take the ball carrier to the ground, rip the ball free from the ball carrier or halding the ball up.
The attackers either keep the ball in the maul and keep the maul going forward or break from the maul and olay on or pass the ball out. I believe the only way to enter the maul is to enter from behind the maul on your side.
If you come from the side or from the opposition side tou will be penalised. Also the attackers have to have momentum or else the referee for a collapsed or unplayable maul.

In regards to the try the player scoring has to have control of the ball and place downward preasure on the ball in the try/goal area. The opposition can prevent a try by tackling them before the try line, or force that player to knock on and drop the ball, they can also rip the ball straight out of their hands, or prevent a try by physically holding the ball or player up (even in the goal/try area) by not allowing the try scoring player to be able to place the ball on the ground. In some cases when the ball is loose they can kick the ball out of bounds or force a dead ball when the opposing team has posession of the ball on the try area. Proabably sounds confusing but I tried, cool to see Americas get into this great game.

If you want to compare to American Football you should be commenting on Rugby League...both codes are derived from Rugby Union. Rules of RL are probably closest to AF.
Here's a suggestion...get yourself along to a Club game in the US or even watch the USA Eagles paying an International game and sit with somebody who can teach you the very basics.

If that green number 14 went to get the loose ball he would have being seen as offside that is why he didn't go for the ball. Number 11's and Number 14's we call them the wingers they are usually the fastest players in the rugby team. The number 11 who runned over players like an bulldozer in this video is Jonah Lomu he was the world's greatest winger of all time he was big, strong & fast which made him extremely hard to tackle he past away at the age of 40 like 6 years ago due to heart attack was a very sad day. Jonah Lomu was 6'4 weighing at 265 pounds when played. You should react to Jonah Lomu.

@@BlakeHC what star said was good , if a tackle has happened the No14 can't try to get the ball until he gets in front of the ball ie trying to get the ball from the sides is illegal , and to try and get the ball he must be standing up and not on the ground to reach it . To try and stop the opposition from getting / reaching for the ball after being tackled the team can pass the ball backwards and on the ground is better because if one or more players join the tackled player and link up the ball can't be got out as long as the ball keeps within that group , look at full games not only just snippets

Hi Blake - there's a former England International rugby player called Christian Wade now playing in the NFL for the Buffalo Bills. He's a running back. A small elusive guy about 5ft7. Got a 65 yard touchdown on his first touch of the ball in his first game in the NFL. He's injured now and looking at retiring. You might find it interesting to look at some clips of him as a rugby player - ua-cam.com/video/FDiS9-m5kDs/v-deo.html

American "Football" was derived from Rugby. Fact. They just added pads and helmets, god knows why?

    • @flamingfrancis
      @flamingfrancis 3 роки тому

Before helmets there were the "leatherheads" that are just like we still see some of players in RU and RL wesring. Shoulder pads were also worn extensively in the two codes.
I would have thought that all the litigation being pursued in many contact codes these days answers your last question.

Unlike american football, in rugby you can't tackle a player that doesn't have the ball, and this isn't even the biggest difference between the two sports. There are quite a lot of rules in rugby, and it's very different from american football.

Greg Inglis plays a different sport with similar but different rules called "Rugby League". Think of it as the difference between American and Canadian Football. A similar game but one has different amount of players, points and rules. Rugby League players are skillful but don't get confused between the sports. @@BlakeHC RL became a separate sport when a group of men who wanted to become professionals broke away from RU which was a weekend gentleman's event. This was in the coalmining area in northern England around 1905. Australians also set up a pro group.
So that is the other difference in the codes...RU was played for an afternoon tea and RL played for quids and ales. RU used to get really shitty when some of their best wanted to earn some cash and defected.
RU saw the light around the 1970's and induced some money into the sport and paid players. Lots of well paid these days.
RL tends to be close in structure to AF especially after one of the greatest Sydney coaches became friends with Vince Lombardi of the Packers and spent some time with him learning plays. Soon after that RL introduced a four tackle (downs) rule which has become six tackles in today's game. P{rior to that there was no tackle limit.
