Lund was on his way to Savannah, Georgia, early one Saturday in August 2021. He had gone just 15 miles from his northern Virginia home when a car traveling the wrong way on the Interstate 95 express lanes collided with his. The frontal collision in the left lane sent Lund’s car spinning and rolling before coming to rest upside down on the right shoulder.

ARLINGTON, Va. - Adrian Lund spent much of his career getting automakers to build vehicles that would protect their occupants from serious injury in a crash. After a severe collision last summer, the retired president of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the Highway Loss Data Institute in all likelihood owes his life to the improvements he helped usher in.
Lund was on his way to Savannah, Georgia, early one Saturday in August. He had gone just 15 miles from his northern Virginia home when a car traveling the wrong way on the Interstate 95 express lanes collided with his. The frontal collision in the left lane sent Lund’s car spinning and rolling before coming to rest upside down on the right shoulder.
Lund estimates he was traveling 60 or 65 mph. The other car was going about 50.
“This was a high-speed crash, one that probably 10 years ago, I wouldn't be here to talk to you about it,” he said recently.
Sadly, the other driver, a 29-year-old woman, was thrown from her car during the crash and died. When the crash occurred, she was driving the wrong way after making a U-turn in the southbound lanes.
Lund, who retired from IIHS-HLDI in 2017, credits his car, a 2020 BMW 540i with saving his life. The model, a 2020 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK, earned good ratings in all six crashworthiness tests, including the ones most applicable to Lund’s crash, the small overlap front and roof strength.
Lund remembers hanging upside down after the crash and noticing that he had room to move his legs. He was aware that he had just been in a frontal offset collision not all that different from the many tests he had watched in the crash hall at the IIHS Vehicle Research Center. In those tests, the structural intrusion is often worst around the legs, and the crash test dummy frequently registers high leg injury measures.
“The emergency teams began to show up shortly thereafter,” Lund said. “They kept asking me, ‘Are you OK?’ I said, ‘I think I'm OK. I don't feel anything broken.’” Soon after, the rescuers cut the seat belt and pulled him out. Lund recalled feeling relief once he was out and able to see people’s faces.
Dominik Schuster, vice president of vehicle safety at BMW, said the crash showed the effectiveness of the vehicle’s safety concept and the importance of the extensive testing that vehicles undergo during development.
“In the end, it's all about one thing - providing vehicle occupants with the best possible protection in the event of an actual crash. IIHS has also been pursuing the same goal for decades. By setting requirements and performing tests derived from real-world crashes, they have been instrumental in driving vehicle safety,” Schuster added. “Ultimately, the crash Adrian Lund had with his BMW 540i is a powerful example of how the interaction between consumer protection organizations like IIHS and automakers saves lives on the road.”
The other car in the crash, a 2016 BMW 228i, also had good crashworthiness ratings for the five tests that IIHS was conducting in 2016. Because the driver wasn’t belted, she was ejected from the vehicle, virtually eliminating any chance of survival. Without knowing more about the condition of her car, it’s impossible to say whether she would have survived this particular crash even if she had been belted. After striking Lund’s car, her car immediately collided with the jersey barrier. In addition, because of its smaller size and lighter weight, the midsize 2 series was at a disadvantage in a crash with the 5 series, a large car.
Lund suffered from dizziness for a couple of weeks resulting from a blow to the head. He had serious bruises on his chest, left side and leg and both heels, along with cuts on his arm. He also had some neck discomfort for several months, which he believes was a result of being upside down after the crash and supporting some of his weight with his head.
“In a crash like this, you don't come out uninjured,” Lund said. “Considering the crash I was in, that I had a frontal, followed by a rollover - yeah, I'm pretty lucky. The car did its job.”

"I prefer to drive cars who passed throuhg IIH tests"... , says a fucking dumb US driver, who maybe is still one of the unbelievably many US clown car drivers, who still don't use safety belts... 🤣🤣🤣
The fact, that a lot of Americans still refuse to using the safety belt, kills awful many people in your country each year!
Here in Germany, we have "Gurtanschnall-Pflicht", which means it's totally mandatory, compulsory for each driver to wear the safety belt! No matter if you drive just one meter with your car, you have to use the safety belt! This is a LAW here in Germany, and therefore every driver of a vehicle in traffic has to use the belt.
In Germany we have about 2000 people each year, who don't survive car crashes or other accidents on the German roads and streets.
2000 killed people, whereas in the United States you have still between 30.000 and 40.000 killed people each year in traffic!
The USA has only a 4 times bigger population than Germany, but has almost 15 to 20 times more !!! killed car drivers/people in traffic!
Therefore here in Germany, the car drivers who are cought by the police with no seat belts on, have to pay high fines. But in the USA it's still a "Kavalliersdelikt" as we say in Germany... How is this possible in such a "developed country" like the USA??
Sorry dude, but a lot of Americans are still fucking backward and overdue!
The 29 year old lady, who sadly didn't survive this crash vs. Mr. Lund is a good example for that.

I remember how poor the 2001 Ford F-150 did in the offset test, and then how good the 2004 Ford F-150 did in the offset test.
On February 6, 2023 around 10:15pm I was driving on a (straight) road when I slid on a patch of black ice. The back end of my 2004 Ford F-150 started to fishtail to the right and I tried to counter steer but over corrected and the back end then swung to the left and turned more the 90° to the ditch. Once the back drivers side wheel went off the road it clipped the snow and the truck started to roll about 3 or 4 times down the ditch before it struck a tree and came to a rest on its wheels.
It knocked the wind out of me and I couldn’t breathe for about a minute. The passenger window shattered out and at some point my phone flew out of the truck. Because I couldn’t find my phone all I could do was keep the horn honking. I was also out in the middle of nowhere even though I was just 2 miles away from my house. The drivers side door was smashed in and jammed shut so once I was able to regain my strength to move I then had to crawl to the passenger side to get out. I eventually found my phone about 6 feet away in the snow. My glasses also flew off as soon as the truck started rolling and I still haven’t found them.
Originally I thought I just went straight down the hill. I then realized how aggressive the truck was being jolted when I was trying to find my phone and saw everything put away under the seats were laying everywhere in the back seat. It wasn’t until I looked around and saw the roof dented inwards and everything that was in the pick up bed scattered everywhere in the snow when I realized I actually rolled several times. You also can’t see yourself rolling. Basically all I could see through my windshield even with my glasses off was the whiteness of snow and a bunch of snow flying around as if you’re in a snow storm with no visibility. The only thing you can feel is yourself being jolted around and being pulled from your seat every time it rolled on the roof.
I was going about 50 to 55 mph but the there was no snow at all on the road. The only snow visible was on the grass and on the trees. It was even 35°F outside which is a heatwave for Minnesota especially for February. What I eventually learned was that it was raining all day while I was asleep. So the road was originally wet but as soon as the sun went down certain spots iced up. I obviously learned this the hard way, also the entire road in the 2 miles I drove were dry, however where I slid is a spot that’s shaded with a bunch of trees.
The truck was totaled unfortunately. I dealt with rib pain and chest pain as well as right wrist pain. I also experienced whiplash in my neck. A few days later I started to have pain on my head which probably was my water bottle hitting my head as that also flew out of the truck. I also did hit my head against the drivers side door too. In fact just 3 months after the wreck I went to the junkyard where the truck is sitting nowadays, and a huge strand of my hair is still stuck between the door frame and window. Thankfully I was able to walk away from the wreck though. I didn’t even get any major cuts. The only part of my body that was bleeding was my finger because I broke my fingernail. None of my airbags deployed either since nothing hit the front end directly as well as the 2004 Ford F-150 didn’t come with side airbags yet.

I'm so happy to see that he's okay after that crash, that looked scary. It really is amazing how far cars have come in terms of safety and the way they protect their occupants now, and a lot of that I think has to do with the IIHS's tests which have pretty much driven automakers to continue refining the safety of their cars. Except it only really affects brand new cars that are on the expensive side, and since at least 70% of families decide to get a full size pickup truck for their family car "because it's big so they *feel* safe" it endangers a lot of people who own/drive smaller cars, especially since a lot of full size pickup drivers tend to drive in a fairly risky fashion. That's not even considering the fairly large amount of full size pickup truck owners who find their truck "too low" for some reason and lift it by quite a few inches, making it even more dangerous for pedestrians and smaller cars.
The IIHS' opinion seems to ignore a few parameters in general: their criterias are very severe so most of the time only more expensive cars are able to get TSP/TSP+, and if you can't afford a TSP/TSP+ then their advice is often simply "to buy a larger used car", not withstanding that a lot of people aren't necessarily interested in getting something big either for lack of space, fuel economy or simply their preference.

@@hamsterama bingo. i don't really live in a big city so size doesn't matter all that much here in terms of parking at home, but i've often seen that full size 3/4 ton pick-ups with full size 4 door cabs and 6½ ft bed (because buying a simple 2 door cab 8 ft bed is apparently not a thing anymore for some reason, and dudes with 4 door full size cab on 1/2 ton trucks get a 5½ ft bed that's absolutely useless) take a ton of space in parking spots, often one and a half parking spots.
That, and you have a lot more blind spots compared to a smaller car. I have a compact wagon and what was considered a subcompact at the time in the US (I consider it a small compact), and I have much less difficulty driving around and seeing stuff in my opinion. That said it's absolutely tiny compared to most full size trucks, my roof barely reaches their side windows (my compact wagon is lowered but my small compact isn't), and my fuel economy, while not very good, is miles ahead of pickup trucks: I was talking with a contractor's employee this winter and he told me he rarely managed to get under 20-25L/100km with his truck, he was spending at least 150 dollars/week on gas.
Plus the trucks are very expensive compared to similar cars: a base model F-150 with 4x4 and the smallest V8 will cost you over 40k. Get a higher trim, a couple of options and a bigger V8 and you're going to reach 50k in no time, if not 60k. For a 1/2 ton pickup truck.

These recent increases in gas didn't really affect me. My 2020 6-speed Toyota Corolla hatchback gets around 41 mpg, with mostly highway driving. Also, it was pretty inexpensive to buy. I got it new for just under US $20,000 (excluding Ohio sales tax). I have to wonder, how is everyone affording these big gas guzzling SUV's and trucks, which cost much more to buy, cost more to insure, and use a lot more gas? As for affording them, they can't: at a previous job I had, there was an 18-year-old dude who was not earning more than I am (a buck above minimum salary at the time) and yet he was talking about how he was buying a Focus RS, back when they were still very recent and around 40k-50k. He ended up buying a brand new fully equipped Ranger two weeks later: when I asked him about insurance, he answered "oh it's not too expensive, 200 per month" when my insurance was 35$/month for my old 2000 Civic (now it's like 25$/month). His loan was something like 500/month so literally half of his salary went in that truck, and his loan was 6 or 7 years. Another dude, younger than I was, at another job, decided to buy himself a fully equipped Sierra Elevation (a 50k+ truck) one or two years old at 19 years old. And in both cases they were still living with their parents. Every time I tell them that my Civic cost me the equivalent of maybe 3-4 months of their loan, they scoff and go "yeah but it's an old Civic", as if anyone was going to be more impressed by a recent pickup truck when there are tons and tons of them on the road. Both my cars (stock old '00 Civic hatch, 5-speed and lowered '09 Jetta Wagon, 5-speed) cost me maybe half of what a recent-ish compact car would cost and they're both fully paid and were fully paid as soon as I bought them. I don't buy a car if I can't pay it all entirely when the ownership gets transferred. And I like to change relatively often anyway, last year I had a Suzuki before I replaced it with the VW.
I honestly don't get there hasn't been a crash yet in car loans like there has been with house loans in '08. Length of loans has doubled in 15 years and car prices have soared by a ton, but salaries haven't increased much. And yet people can't get enough, we're in a shortage of new cars and now it's the used market that's jumping a ton. And they still buy big cars/trucks even if gas prices are insanely high, I don't get it. I don't really get good gas mileage from my cars (I don't really drive economically lol) and yet it's miles ahead from people who own trucks.
By the way, how did you manage to get a brand new Corolla hatch for under 20k? There's almost nothing today that's brand new and can be found under 20k.

The responders were able to open my damaged door and pull me out. What I don't get about this story is how are there still people who don't wear their seatbelt?!

I always wear my seatbelt in my personal vehicle but drive large trucks at work and often don't wear it. It's not a good reason but it restricts my ability to lean forward to look around the mirrors for cross traffic as they frequently lock from hitting bumps. They are a very large blind spot in a heavy truck. I have seen a truck where the driver was ejected and the truck rolled on top of him so I should really know better I guess

Not always the case. Someone could be a classic car enthusiast and still work there, well knowing that they're probably dead in a crash. I personally only drive top safety pick cars, but then again I ride a motorcycle. When I worked at a dealer and people ask about tires, most people like hearing "this tire is what most of our employees have", but it's mostly because it's the cheapest tire, not the best.

I think this is the best IIHS video yet. It proves that THIER testing has greatly improved the way cars are designed. And this is thanks to the IIHS, NHTSA and EURONCAP don’t have a small overlap test. And only one has an offset test. IIHS is greatly improving our probability to survive deadly crashes, and this is proof
