- Incredible new lens for creatives, macro enthusiasts, and photography nerds like me alike! This is the only 2x macro tilt-shift lens available, and it's coming in hot at a great price and loaded with features. Yes, it's tilt AND shift while also being a 2:1 ratio macro lens. Crazy. I tried to show off as many parts of it as I could in this video and still feel like I barely scratched the surface of what this lens is capable of.

The lens is about $30 cheaper here right now: bit.ly/TTArtisan100mmTiltShift
(That's an affiliate link, and I'll get a commission if you decide to purchase using it).
And it's cheaper than Amazon where I live (France). Thanks for the review and the link. Much appreciated.
I have to say I am slightly disappointed we didn't get to hear you mispronounce "Scheimpflug principle".
And you know I would have 🤣
I’m slightly disappointed that you spelled it correctly...😂
TTArtisan is quickly becoming my favorite lens company. Really affordable and the parameters of their lenses are often very interesting, such as this one.
I'm really enjoying their lens lineup! Especially the affordability!
@@snappiness I would like to see them start doing autofocus with some more of their glass given how good their AF stuff has been at an affordable pricepoint. Let's get some sub $400 autofocusing 0.95 primes.
I think I saw this at the $400 price point if I recall. That's fantastic value for all the design features!
Yeah, super good value! I'm really impressed with the price point they were able to get it to!
Shift seems really useful for macro because when you're really close you often can't get the framing you want easily without moving the focal plane.
Right! I was enjoying that.
Really wish this was available in an EF mount
This lens got launched just as I bought the 40mm f2.8 Macro by them lol. Looks amazing so far !
I've heard awesome things about that lens too :)
@@snappiness It's actually really good, easily replaced a canon FD 50mm f3.5 macro lens for me, which is an absolute classic and the sharpest FD lens I've ever seen. You should check that one out, it's got super strange hexagonal bokeh when closed down a bit.
The TTartisan definitely won in terms of contrast, bokeh, minimum focus distance and mounted size.
This lens seems awesome, I love all the thoughtful touches like the mounting threads for lights at the end of the lens.
Agreed! It's well thought out and affordable (I mean, relatively for this kind of lens!)
This sounds like the perfekt lens for me. I always wanted to try tilt and shift and i really enjoy macro photographie. So i will keep an eye on this
It's a lot of fun to use! My first 2x macro, and then throw in the tilt shift.
Most tilt-shift lenses have large image circles to cover medium format sensors like in Fuji GFX
This is insanely cool! :D
Agreed! 🤓
Both you and Mattias Burling are core to the special tribe who have a passion for fun cameras, fun lenses and the fun of photography
I love fun photography :)
It is good to see someone reviewing the manual focus, third party lenses. I already have three lenses in this general focal length but each offers a different feature the others lack. Now we have tilt shift. For what I do, I value lighter weight like the Laowa 2:1 macros (especially the85 and 90 versions) so I'd have to consider just how much I would use yet another. I do wish some of my lenses had that 1/4-20 on the front (I have drilled holes in lenshoods to accomplish this). Good video. Liked and Subscribed.
Very interesting that you've done the screw mount modification yourself! I have heard awesome things about the Laowa line of lenses.
Im really interested in this but why does the tilt/shift doesn’t work on ef mounts? Any adapters to overcome this issue?
personally i have no use for a TS lens or Macro lens... but from experience with other TTArtisan lenses i can confidently say... they're great! Sure on paper you can get something better.... but i real world applications you really can't tell the difference
I would find 100mm too long to use with tilt shift, but I think they make a 50mm too. Another way to go it to use one of Fotodiox's Rokr tilt shift adapters with a Pentax 67 or 645 medium format lens. The adapter is $175, and one can find a great lens for $150 or less. The big format covers a smaller sensor easily. No 2:1 (without tubes anyway), but great for architecture and such. Lots of videos about them here.
Probably never going to buy one but curious about what people might make using it
I love that you are such a nerd when it comes to anything cool about photography. Plus you explain everything really well.
I was _just_ shooting with my macro lens for one of my videos and I kept getting annoyed that I couldn’t get the entire logo on one of my cameras in focus for to the razor thin focal plane. This lens would totally solve that problem! Good to know there’s a tool out there that can help with this unique issues.
1) A tilt sensor is worth investigating, but you could get a lot of light loss.
2) the tilt feature could be used to photography a pond with water lillies and get it all in focus.
3) I wonder how they can design it so that it is sharp when tilted.
4) I have a tilt and shift 24 mm Lens.
Schleimpfung's rule is useful to know when focusing but the tiny adjustments are hard to get right.
With a tilt of 8 degrees, it won't do much for outdoor shots
Schneider already made a lot of macro tilt shift lenses, obviously higher quality of this
No doubt Schneider is known for high quality optics! None of their tilt shift macro lenses even come close to 1:1 magnification, let alone 2:1, which is the claim to fame with this lens. Also those lenses are thousands and thousands of dollars. So they better be dang good 😆
@@snappiness you can buy a large format macro lens and use a tilt shift adapter lol
This lens is cool. I wish it had a native M43 mount.
It needs to!
@@snappiness it looks like they'll release one for Panasonic L-mount and M43 mount. According to 43rumors it'll be in a couple months. And the options for L-mount and MFT are on the webpage for this lens, so it does seem like it'll happen!
Man now I almost regret getting the LAOWA 90mm 2.8 for Sony - because I also have a GFX body... having that option for both systems would have been amazing. But then again that would require at least a GFX to Sony E adapter and I don't even know whether one exists...
EDIT: I just read that the GFX mount is only available without a shift function. So yeah I think I'm happy with the Laowa hehe
Yeah that's right, and if I read correctly you also can't magnify all the way either. The Laowa is probably sharper. I have nothing to prove that other than I've heard super good things about Laowa macro lenses! (I have yet to try one!)
@@GeraintDafis Yeah I just read and watched a few reviews. The Laowa is pin sharp at all magnifications (which I can attest to) while the TT has to catch up quite a bit and...in the end it can't really do it. It's probably better for video stuff (though why it comes with a non-declickable aperture ring is a mystery) while the Laowa is much better for photography.
@@snappiness I absolutely agree - although the TT could have been very interesting for video - but not with a non-declicked aperture ring. The T/S would have been very interesting but with this lens lagging behind the Laowa for photography it's not even close.
Wish I had known about this one before getting the AstrHori 85mm. What is the chromatic aberration situation like on this? On the 85mm it’s bad enough thetas I switched back to using my Laowa 65mm. And also, if you tilt it all the way, does the edge of the image circle enter the frame? It does on the AstrHori lens. If CA is well controlled and the image circle is big enough, I might switch to this.
Image circle is big enough tilted, at least in my testing on APSC. Same with shifted all the way. I don't have a FF mirrorless to test on. I haven't noticed any terrible CA in my shots.
@@snappiness That is good to hear! Thanks for the quick answer. :)
Been wanting a lens with Tilt functionality for a while, so if this one isn’t disappointing like the AstrHori lens, I’ll be happy. (I think the Laowa 65mm has spoiled me on image quality :P)
@@just_eirik Those Laowa's seem hard to beat. Everyone makes the same comment as you. I'll have to try one out eventually :)
I bought the Astrhori 85mm very soon after it was announced, and am now sitting here regretting that particular decision.
cool
Im so cheap I just use my Canon EF 100mm f2.8L Macro IS on my Sony camera via Sigma MC-11 adapter. It works just fine. I also have an extender for it.
Curious why the showed this on GFX if not offered in G mount
I'm not sure, but it is an easy way to illustrate the larger image circle :)
Is it really f/2.8 in macro mode?
No macro lens that I know of is really f/2.8 once you reach macro distances - and you wouldn't want it to be, as depth of field becomes super shallow.
@@TheSC20k So it’s dimmer in the viewfinder too? What might it drop down to?
Is there T7 adapter?
Like for the Canon T7 DSLR? No, this lens is designed for mirrorless cameras with a much shorter flange distance.
@@snappiness Thanks. Thought that was the case.
your bh link is wrong
Yikes, they are. Thanks for catching that.
“…and I haven’t even scratched the surface…” is a phrase you cannot use during a LENS review. You will trigger too many people.
gloves? why))
You don't honestly shoot images with gloves on...do you?
The lens looks good...but...the Loawa is sharper evidently. It's a ,macro lens...that has to be the primary goal...sharpness.
I'll wait.
😅 it's because I mountain bike and take stops along the way to snap pics. Too lazy to take them off and put back on each time.
@@snappiness Okay...whew.
Desperate sales video to raise some money.
People who kill insects to pose them, are rather cringe indeed, especially when the main rule of wildlife photography is, to always put the animals welfare first, over the shot.
What about curious vintage stuff? Channel slowly becoming an «anyartisan» advertising page. Sad but sad
Oh there's lots of that coming, don't worry. I did start obsessing over third party mirrorless lenses because I just think they're so cool and affordable. Throw them on my old mirrorless and see what it can do. But I actually do agree that it's been a distraction from the core of the channel.
@snappiness How is the image quality?
Superficially, I would rate it as very good. I am very happy with my results even all the way at two times magnification. From wide open to F8. After that I think diffraction starts to set in. Bokeh is very pleasant to me. Flare hasn't been an issue so far, but I didn't do a direct flare test. Contrast holds strong even with bright lights. Wide open at infinity it is acceptably sharp but not the best I've ever used. Although in these situations I would either be using it for portraits, or playing with tilt, and in both cases the highest sharpness wouldn't be my objective anyway.
For a more objective answer to that question, @christopher frost here on YT dives into some lens testing with charts and stuff. I'm not into that but I think it's a great free resource he offers!
Hope that helps!
Awesome lens but what continuous light is that with the pivot? And where can I buy this?
