  • The Cog has returned!
After a full and complete renovation period covering a span of nearly 3 and a half years, public passenger service returned to the Manitou and Pikes Peak Railway on May 20th, 2021. Yours truly had been fortunate enough to score a ticket on the first day's 2:40 PM departure to the summit. The railway now has an option online where you are able to choose your desired seat aboard the train of your choice, for an added price. It was a no-brainer for me to choose a seat directly up front, next to the engineer. In this video, we view the completely updated station area of Manitou, where some of the brand new railway equipment sit on Depot Track 2. The 10:40 passenger train returns from the summit, discharges passengers, and runs up to the shop area for servicing. Newly-restored M&PP Unit 24 then drops back down onto Track 1, where we load up and depart on our uphill journey. During the trip, we pass 2 separate trains, take in the magnificent views, and observe the new operation in motion; complete with DTMF siding switches and track that is now in immaculate condition. I once resided as an engineer for the railway from 2014-2017, so this trip was a heartfelt throwback that I am fortunate to have not missed. Engineer Dylin, Conductor Adam, and Conductor Dave did a spectacular job getting us to the summit and back again. Tickets sell out quickly, so be sure to book your ride on The Broadmoor's Manitou & Pikes Peak Cog Railway TODAY! Rate. Comment. Subscribe. ENJOY!!! Copyright Nick Valdez Railroad Photography 2021.

I was on the cog train in the 70s as a kid with my parents. Quite an experience. We went in July. Be sure to wear warm clothes because at the top it is cold and breezy.

So changes that have been made:
3:47 The shed that used to be there has been demolished with a second track being built through it, meaning that the base station has two tracks.
6:12 All of the sidings have been lengthened and now have automatic switching.
7:57 That used to be a spur, not a passing siding.
15:11 The summit platforms now are handicapped accessible, and are designed so that either track can be used.

It was great to see this video. My family lived in Colorado in the early 1960swhen my father was at Ent AFB and I was nuts about trains. So of course we had to ride the cog railroad up Pikes Peak. That was the old train, a silver and red coach pushed by a diesel-electric locomotive. Good to be able to relive the trip to the summit!
Of course in those days the Manitou Incline cable cars were still operating and the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo had a miniature cog railway of its own. Now I guess they only exist in memories.

The train has good brakes HOWEVER if the breaks fail there are two large springs that will stop the train.
They are located near where you got on the train.
The name of the two springs are:
    1. Colorado Springs
    AND
    2. Manitou Springs
    Enjoy the ride.....

I'm guessing the new Stadler trains aren't yet being used for passenger service, seeing as they were running the 1976 articulated trains here.

Hi Nick. Thanks for this . I had no idea of this railway , amazing ! I knew about Pikes Peak through my interest in motor racing . And l believe this first ran in 1879 ? I have been on a cog railway in Wales (uk) . But that was nothing compared to this ! It must cost a small forune to keep this running , the maintenance is obviously 24/7 . How much is a ticket $100 ? Well l know where to go if l ever make it to the States again . I visited Seattle in 1997 ....all too briefly ! 8days ! I'm sure you were in your element ! Thanks Nick . Very much appreciated.

I CANNOT believe it costs that much to ride the Cog Rail. That's over $200.
00 for a family of four. Damnnnn!! If true, that is highway robbery.
