Bet was such a naughty minx - utterly shameless how she manipulated poor Alf and Renee and wouldn't move out. Of course the newlyweds didn't want that bottle- blonde cuckoo sharing their cramped nest, as Bet well knew!
They were a middle aged childless couple, who found themselves with a very annoying, deluded 'teenage daughter' in the shape of Bet Lynch - very unfair!
I did enjoy the way Bet mercilessly teased and flirted with cuddly teddy bear Alf though. And even better, when he got his revenge by pretending he fancied her. He scared her to death. Priceless!

The character Mavis Riley turned 40 in April 1978, but in reality the actress who played her, Thelma Barlow, turned 49 on 19th June that year.
Thelma is 4 years older than Barbara Knox (Rita Fairclough/Tanner), who turned 90 on 30th September 2023.
Rita is still in Coronation Street and Barbara has played her for over 50 years, making her the second longest-serving soap actor in the world after William Roache, who has played Ken Barlow since Corrie's first ever episode in December 1960.
At time of writing (October 2023), I'm thrilled to say Thelma Barlow is still with us, aged 94, living in beautiful Dorset.

Thank you so much for posting these videos! I'm reliving my childhood! Coronation Street aired in Australia, not sure how far behind we were, and ran for many years then they suddenly stopped. A few years later it continued running - can't remember how kong - then was axed again. With the introduction of streaming services, we can see it inline now. I'm 56 and these episodes are sooo long ago but am loving seeing them again. I went to Granada in 1990 and had a tour of the Street and a pint in the Rovers. 🇦🇺📺🎭✨️👏👍🍻

I know Thelma Barlow was 49 in the episode, but have to admit people looked so much older back then. Nowadays the average 50 year old looks 40-45, probably because of the environment they grew up in, better food and health and skincare being shoved down everyone's throat.

England used to be a major manufacturer and many of the jobs were brutally hard and work environments noxious. Such caused premature ageing and early death. My family were employed by British Steel and the environment often so foul that washing could not be hung out to dry. My grandfather died age 32 and my uncle not much older. His job was to wheel a wheelbarrow containing 4 cwt. (204 kg.) of iron ore which alone he had to manually tip. His wage in the 1960s was around £20. per week out of which he purchased his work wear. There was no safety clothing or safety anything! Food was then actually more natural, good, and wholesome. (If interested read 'Bygone Stanton,' by Danny Corns and Andrew Knighton).

No welfare state back then. If men didn't work, their families didn't eat. And a visit to the doctor was beyond most pockets, so only if a child was desperately ill was medical attention even considered. It's a cliche I know, but people don't know they're born today.

New guidelines says to feed them only as much as they can eat, this ensures the uneaten bread doesn't rot and cause algae to grow everywhere, also stops rats I suppose.

Try feeding bread to a grebe, or a heron and you'll find they won't eat it because they don't like it. Ducks and swans love bread.
