I downloaded the rom off of emuparadise along with the chd, and tried it in various versions of MAME but none of them seem to work. Anyone have a rom/chd that works and know what version of MAME it works on?
yes sorry for late response but try this out wowroms.com/en/roms/mame/cube-quest/80114.html or www.retrostic.com/roms/mame/cube-quest-48116 and www.emurom.net/us/emulation/mame-roms/detail-16953-cube.quest.01-04-84.html hope it works for you
After much toil and finding alot of space i got this game running perfectly the chd file is no joke out of 3 cpu none had the space for it so i had to resort to running it off an external hd ill buy a cheap 1Tb hd and thats were ill store it yea this rom gave me some headache but the games trippy backgrounds do make it worth the trouble.
Yes, the CHD file contains the audio and background video. You can convert it with chdman.exe. File size will be 38.2 GB 00:30:02 min 720x524 29 fps. Converted to Divx 758 MB.
If you have the storage space and a decent PC I would recommend you give it a try. It's not that bad of a DL when using BitTorrent. It may seem a bit jerky in the video but the game play is quite good. The jerkiness is caused by my video capture software.
It's more of a milestone as the first Laserdisc game to be emulated on Mame. It brings us closer to the day when Mame can emulate everything. The only thing I'm not a fan of if is the large size of the CHDs. Don't quote me, if you want to know more then google it but I think it's because the point of Mame is FAITHFULL emulation, apparently that means no video compression. Although a good lossless codec would probably be able to make it smaller and not sacrifice much.
Does the CHD only contain data for the background video (as well as the introduction at the beginning)? If so, I wonder if it would be possible to make a DivX out of the video and use that.
In the 1983 it was difficult and expensive to produce any kind of 3d graphics, and the only way to stream video was to play from a laserdisc, which looked like a DVD the size of a record. The backgrounds are playing from a laserdisc while the game's sprites are drawn over the top. Other games made like this with better graphics are Dragon's Lair and Atari Firefox. Yes, I agree this game is ugly XD.
cool technology considering the time it was released
I got it working on mame but only the polygons. The laser disc background doesnt apear ☹️. How do i get the laser disc background to work?
Way ahead of its time

Yet, currently only MAME.

i downloaded a 150 GB Mame pack and this game plays, but there are no cool pretty graphics, just lines. How do i get it to look like that?
Does it work on DAPHNE?
this was an unreleased vectrex game :( there does exist a repro of this game, but only 100 exist

looks like Tempest on speed....
I actually wanna try this game, but I can't bring myself to download that HUGE .CHD file, it's insanely massive...

In that case: is the DivX available anywhere? At the moment, I have no way of storing 38.2 GB.
get a hard drive
Don't download this huge file. Hire a ROM burner.
This is the weirdest game I've ever heard of. O.O
TL;DR - not a weirdest game, not an unreleased game, nothing. Polybius is dead - Long live Cube Quest.

4:10 to 4:46 reminds you of 2001: a space odyssey.
