    Welcome back to Scary Bear Attacks! Today’s episode takes us to Denali National Park Headquarters. The geography in the parks features the world’s highest mountain in relief. When assessing a mountain's relief, it is measured from the elevation at which it starts and all the way to the top. Denali Mountain, also known as Mount McKinley measures 20,310 feet, with the world's highest mountain, Mount Everest reaching 29,302 feet but only about 15,000 feet in relief. Relief is the measurement of a mountain's height from its base to its peak, but elevation is the maximum height of a mountain without regard to its base. The area surrounding Denali was formed into a national park and was established on February 26th, 1917 as Mountain McKinley National Park. The headquarters of the park is located within the first mile of the George Parks Highway entrance and offered visitors restaurants, hotels, and gift shops. The mountains of this area are covered with alder and willow, but in the valleys spruce, fir and birch trees dominate the skyline. Moose, Caribou, and Sheep roam the trails while they hide from black bears, wolves and grizzly bears.
    In the early morning hours of June 4th, 1980, 21 year old Dan Merren and two of his coworkers were making their way across the parking lot. They were employees of one of the hotels that housed visitors to the park and were used to the beauty and dangers the park presented.
    As the hotel workers walked along the road, they watched two huge moose trotting toward them. These moose were not moseying like normal. They had a sense of urgency in their steps and were continually looking over their own back trail, as if something was following them.
    Now, brown bears are not known to hunt in packs, or tolerate each other's presence for extended periods of time. They are usually known to hunt and exist in solitude, except when the salmon run. During this time, the river banks are crowded by giant bears, pacified by bellies full of salmon roe and skin. They tolerate each other during this time due to an abundance of food and is not the typical condition for their existence.
    As the workers watched the nervous moose galloping across the road, they noticed that two huge grizzlies emerged from the same location on the roadside from which the moose had come. One of the bears was larger than the other, but they were clearly both grown and mature.
    Dan and his coworkers knew that the presence of the bears presented a substantial risk to their safety. Most of the time, grizzlies around the park would have little to do with humans, especially when there was more than one person in the group. The tension in the air was high, but the people did expect the bears to offer very little more than a passing interest in them as they loped across the road.
    Dan and the others stopped walking as soon as they had seen the bears following the moose. They knew they that drawing the bear's attention could create a precarious situation, so they froze in their tracks. To their horror, the larger grizzly craned his neck toward the small crowd of people, and immediately veered his loping stride toward them.
    The bears were only about 100 yards away when they initially emerged from the roadside brush, but the larger one quickly closed that distance. The workers grew increasingly nervous as the bear focused its eyes on them while it bounced effortlessly toward them. They undoubtedly hoped the bear would peel off and return to chasing the moose after investigating what they were. But, the bear wasn’t planning on chasing the moose anymore, once it determined that there was easier prey nearby.
    Like a covey of quail exploding from brush, the hotel workers scattered in panic once the bear got within twenty yards. Dan ran toward the trees, while the other two ran in other directions. He reached up and pulled himself into the tree, hoping to get high enough to discourage the grizzly from pursuing him any further.
    At this time, most people believed that grizzly bears could not effectively climb trees and seeking shelter there was the best strategy. For the most part, grizzlies do not invest the energy in pursuing people who climb trees. But, if the tree has low limbs which allow the bears to climb up, sort of what people would need to climb a tree, then they can climb up and pursue people.
    As Dan hurriedly pulled himself higher into the tree, the grizzly quickly approached the base of the tree. Now, the average grown grizzly bear stands at around 7 feet tall on its hind legs and can reach another couple of feet higher after extending its front paws.

    This Grizzly bear was in primal mode and would've eaten this guy. This bear charged a group of people, which rarely happens, and singled out Dan. This bear after pulling him from the tree was looking for another human to kill. I think this bear being so brazen has attacked humans before and maybe eaten them. People go missing all of the time with no explanation and I think this was 1 of those bears. This bear should've been hunted down and destroyed because no way this is the last time this bear will preditorialy go after people. God I hope not. Like you Atticus I've hunted everywhere and had many run ins with Grizzlies but I can tell you I hope I never run into this preditorial bear, ever.

    I live in Montana in Grizzly Bear territory and the thought of grizzlies teaming up and hunting together absolutely terrifies me lol as well it should. I came face to face with a griz a couple of years ago while huckleberry picking and due to the fact that we both rounded a thicket (and the wind was in my favor) we both startled each other so bad that we both wanted nothing to do with the other. He was interested in a heavenly patch of huckleberries and after seeing him I was very happy to exit the area so he could eat his fill lol

    When he fell out of the tree from the bear, grabbing his ankle, and then the bear focused on something else, and he climbed the tree again he just got plain lucky. He is very fortunate to be a survivor and not a victim of his own death.💀☠️ my current. Congratulations go out to him. Hope he’s doing well. Thanks for the video. Have a great day. Dan was very, VERY lucky! I have no idea why the bear would use so much focus on trying to get a man out of a tree, then once he does, he just scampers away for a short time. That's weird really because the bear was obviously in "hunting mode." But again, Dan needs to be thanking the heavens above every day for that gift!

    Black bears have concave claws, and their lighter weight makes it easy for them to climb trees.
    🐻
    Brown bears have relatively flatter claws; that, and their massive weight makes them poor candidates for tree climbing.
    🐻🐻
    However, as you pointed out, you have to get at least 9 feet into the tree to be truly safe.
    🐻🐻🐻
    I don't think bears pack. I think we see the older juvenile(s) on its last season with mom before striking out on its own.
    There is no "packing" here, just cubs being cubs.
    🐻🐻🐻🐻
    Great video, by the way - and thank you for asking!

    Climbing the tree was his best option of escape. I think I'm only aware of 1-2 cases where a bear climbed the tree higher than 10ft to get their victim. As others have mentioned black bears are natural tree climbers and I've even seen them climb trees to evade the jaws of an attacking grizzly bear.

    Tree climbing is better than nothing, than being unarmed on the ground. The two bears were related, a late-blooming cub and an indulgent sow, or more likely, two brothers who hadn't quite separated as adults.
    Possibly two brothers who reunited....? I have never heard of adult sibling bears reuniting, but I can't say it is impossible. Certainly improbable, but never? I can't say that?

      A group of people making lots of noise would have been better strategy. I was watching an african lion safari video and out of nowhere a bunch of africans came running out of the bush armed with spears and making lots of noise running toward an lion and its kill and chased it off. It was amazing to see, but these guys were prepared for the worst case scenario armed being armed. Thing is its not the weapons that scared them off its was their actions , louds noises and aggresive charging behaviour. Wild animals arent detered by weapons like we are, so a gun is only as good as its stopping power, your actoins and behaviours are probably more effective of changing a perdators bears mind. But its necessary to have something incase they dont change thier mind, like thos africans had with their spears. I think long pointy object is something a lot of animals understand as dangerouse and maybe a spear is more effective as detterent then bear spray or a gun. I say detterent, maybe not in actual practise, like i think bear spray is the easier way to defend, but maybe in the hands of skilled spear chucker. But as a detterent i dont think bears or most animals understand what spray cans or guns are so have no detterent effect that way like a big pointy object.

    I'm glad Dan lived! I think you can survive a grizzly bear attack by climbing a tree as evidenced by Dan's second attempt, but only if you can climb quick enough and high enough to avoid getting nabbed. Climbing a tree will not work with a black bear. They are superb climbers. I once watched a video of a black bear who had climbed up a tree to avoid getting attacked by a grizzly.

    Could’ve been a sow and her offspring which was probably close to being on its own. Maybe that accounts for why the bear started looking around after it yanked Dan from the tree. Perhaps if it was an about grown cub she was going to give the cub a few final life lessons. Just a thought as we don’t know the sex of the bigger bear

  • @paintbrush3554
    @paintbrush3554 6 місяців тому +4

    I don't think the bear saw Dan as food but competition for its hunt. Grizzly bears are amazing climbers and could've easily climbed up and dragged him out of the tree the second time. (Grizzlies actually can climb trees just using their claws and don't require low branches. )The first time it seemed to just not want him to get away as after it pulled him down it didn't go for a leathal attack and left him alone. Most likely it wanted to nuetralize him as a threat. It only attacked again when he got up and called attention to himself again. Generally climbing trees is not a good method against bears and the only reason him doing so didn't lead to his death is the bear was not seeing him as prey but a nuisance in the middle of its hunt. If it really wanted him for food it had multiple opportunities to kill him.

    I would certainly climb a tree in Dan's situation, but I know from reviewing many bear attacks that it doesn't guarantee safety. Some bears will pursue up the tree-especially sows with cubs-while others won't, for whatever reason. Many bear attack experts now say not to bother doing so, but If you are lucky like Dan it might give you enough of an edge to survive.

This was very lucky for Dan and likely the Griz either didn't pursue him because the moose where there or the bear was big is my bet. I have seen every type of bear here in Canada up in trees, from being startled I thought being the reason they were. I personally know of a situation where outside a Northern oilfield facilty two people where out walking and came accross a bear, they climbed a tree and the bear went right up it and took the girl killing her. It was a service rig manager who was driving down the dirt road and he had a rifle and killed the bear but it was too late for the girl, sadly.

    Not surprising the bear turned to the people. Moose are also powerful creatures. While a bear is probably likely to win a one vs one, if a moose can get a good charge with those antlers it could injure, who knows maybe even kill. So taking the risk hunting a moose vs hunting people, yeah the bear is going for the people.

    What you call relief is actually called prominence.

    • @scarybearattacks
      @scarybearattacks  6 місяців тому +3

      From what I understand, prominence can extend below sea level, as in the volcanic mountains that make up Hawaii. Relief was used a few decades ago much more commonly. But, I admit, it is not used much anymore for some reason. Maybe it is hard to establish just where the individual mountain actually begins.

    The thought of grizz working in a coordinated fashion, much more a pack, should scare the life out of hunters and nature wandering humans.. I mean, it would make for a much more exciting hunt, and in this case, no way I would go solo hunting again... Regardless of firepower... You gotta sleep some time! IF I were not armed in brown bear country, which I will never not be, I think a decent tree is likely your only saving grace if one is h3ll bent on getting you.. Better remember your tree climbing skills and put a lot of distance up it... Forget worrying about your soiled underwear and try and find a decent branch you can break off and go for his eyes with... IF you have bear spray, I still suggest the tree and when you get up it, the spray likely would send it back to easier pray.. Short and sweet as always, right? LOL

      There are instances of bears behaving in a "pack-ish" manner in Russia. A couple of episodes discuss starving bears invading towns in the Russian Far East, but I think that is more due to them following their noses than a collective strategy.

    Hard call. Our natural survival instinct would be to get out of the jaws bite zone. I know i'd rather get up the tree than try and play dead while he took a chunk out of my quad. If he sees you as food source playing dead just makes it easier unless it's not a sow with a cub. However, Grizzlies claws are just a bit more extended than a black bears and with enough effort they can climb any tree large enough for it's weight. If it wants you they can chase to the top although I've heard that's pretty rare but has happened.
    PS I found this incredible footage of two grizzly bears fighting on an ocean shore in BC on June 3rd, uploaded by the people who filmed it very nearby from the boat. Such powerhouses!

      hm it's my understanding that the blackbear's shorter claws better enable it to climb. you're worse f*cked if it's the more tree-agile ursus americanus on ya.

    I dont know anything about bears bc I live in south alabama but even a gun wouldn't make me feel safe against a huge grizzly. Unless it was a BIG gun. I'd like to see some flamethrower action against one though 😂 Bear en flambè! I just hate the psycho bears, sorry not sorry.

    No I don’t think the trees are a good place to go they can climb trees so it can still get you. I believe the bear got temporary distracted either by a noise or smell that’s why it did what it did.. I think the bear was going to go after these people no matter what but was still interested in the moose.

    • @color_me_
      @color_me_ 3 місяці тому

      but if there's nowhere else to go...? can't escape by running, unlikely to fight it off even with weaponry (though everyone should have it 'cause it's sure better than nothing)...
      if it's a tall, sturdy tree, & you can get way high up, it could save you.....definitely my go-to, if it's near enough by.

    It’s interesting that you say most of the time grizzlies will have nothing to do with humans , yet most of your stories are about grizzlies sneaking up on humanS or basically running up on them and mauling them, a lot of them maulling them to death. so which one is it? If someone was doing research on whether they should go to these parks, it wouldn’t be helpful to tell them that a grizzly is not going to bother you. If I saw grizzly I likely would bend over and kiss my own 🫏 goodbye.
