This is a great explanation except for one factor. Motorcycles and bikes dont stay up because of gyroscopic forces. The force exists but its not strong enoigh to hold a bike up frok falling left or right. The stability of a bike comes from the angled steering axis. The wheel contact patch is behind the axis of rotation so if the bike falls right the front wheel rotates slightly and causes the bike to right itself. If you put a bike on a pin and spin both of the wheels at riding speed it wont balance, but the self righting nature of the steering axis will keep the bike up

    • @Tactech-tc1pe

Finally someone that knows, UA-camrs need to stop spreading myths like “gyros keep the bike upright” or “Bigger contact patch means more grip” and etc without doing any research.

The reason why higher speeds are more stable is because spinning objects have gyroscopic rigidity, which makes them not want to change the plane they are currently spinning in. The centrifugal effect is not a force that fights against gravity but rather what happens to mass as you spin it around an axis. There is a force that is exerted against your tires as they spin as well against you as you turn, but that is called a centripetal force and it is constantly pointing toward the center by which you are rotating, not outwards. Also the speed the tire is rotating is not thrust it’s angular velocity, and gyroscopic procession is what happens when you leave a gyroscopic spinning in midair where gravity tries to pull it down but the rigidity of the gyroscope keeps it up, making the entire thing “process” or turn in a circle.

Centrifugal is a misnomer for the radial component of the acceleration created from friction. Centripetal force is term for the same idea. Neither is an actual force or a valid description of the free body or a component of its motion profile. Gravity is pushing you down, angular acceleration from the change in momentum is pushing you out, and the frictional component from your tires is counteracting both. Theres no imaginary force pulling you in. But you dont need to know that, I don't know why I typed this.

But my man here isn’t wrong. And learned some new stuff too. What started the rabbit hole dig? Go on and search tiger 1/8 scale RC motorcycle - or Kyosho RC motorcycle. Watch the steering do what seems odd. You only turn right to go right at VERY SLOW speeds. Then you actually turn opposite to go direction you want. But *ONLY to initiate turn. 👈 Important detail I hadn’t yet been learned on properly. Thanks Adobo Moto! Keep the rubba side down!

If your taking a sharp right turn and feel like you can’t make it enough with just pushing right, maybe pull on the left and it will make you get a little more turn..just try it next time your out and you’ll see what I mean

When you lean you dont need to turn bars. And sometimes would be worse.
And you can also see when the bike is stationary when you turn the bars the bike leans the opposite way. And yet using big words to impress people to make yourself sound like a pro wont work.
The reason counter steering works is becuase you increase the drag of the tyre on one side. Also the geometry of the bars to forks to wheels also helps, normally reffered to as "Rake" helps most bikes be more manoeuvrable. The less rake the better the turn, hence why sports bike are used in GP rather than a chopper.
But still good points were made.

  • @groundsurvivalstudygracieg4034

You can think of a bike traveling in a straight line as being in equilibrium ie., balance, where the tires are in line below the center of gravity. When you steer left, the front wheel moves left earlier than the center of gravity, causing a fall to the right. When that fall has tipped over far enough to reach a desired lean angle the rider can return the handlebar toward the right, until reaching a new equilibrium, where the bike's center of gravity is falling just as fast as it's front wheel is steering back in line beneath. The interplay between balancing upright and falling over (leaning) is how we steer, and that steering is always initiated by taking the front wheel to the opposite side we want to lean.

Actually you push left to go right and Vice versa. Sit on your bike and try it, it’s trippy.

Leaning gets especially fun with a super-light bike in a windy area. I'll be going in a straight line with the bike leaned over like I'm turning at the track!
Seems to scare the drivers around me for some reason . . ..

Yeah, but you can tilt the bike left or right but continue to drive in a straight line.

I like most of your videos bro.
But I don't usually push forward on the left grip to go left. and right to go right.
it's just some people will take literally but always good advice 👍🏁😜🇭🇲

Frictional force = (frictional coefficient)*(normal reaction) . Frictional coefficient depends only on the materials in contact, not surface area. Hence, Frictional force is same for a moving smaller contact patch and a larger contact patch as long as the rubber or weight (normal reaction) are not different/changing.

Nice video, but no, gyroscopic forces have nothing to do with it. Someone once built a bicycle with a counter-rotating wheel next to the front wheel to cancel out all the gyro forces. The bike worked fine.
Countersteering is how you initiate the lean for your upcoming turn. You are going to want to be leaning into the turn while you turn, so you twitch the wrong way to start falling over. When you are tilted over just right, you adjust the steer to carve the turn.
At low speed, the timing of the countersteering/balance is wrong, so it's hard to ride. Gyro forces or the lack thereof are not the problem.
A wheel will keep itself upright if you roll it all by itself.
Tire profile is important since a wider tire takes more effort to keep balanced. When you lean into a turn, the weight of the bike has to be over a contact patch that is an inch or so off the centerline. Most of us stick a knee toward the center of the turn to shift our weight over the new balance points.

another reaon bikes stay upright while going forward is the front wheel is designed to turn in the direction it is leaning in

Disagree imo but can see some of your points. I’d recommending watching the Tom Scott video where he rides a push bike and they explain how you turn.
It’s less about turning the bike, more about moving the bike from underneath you. The counter steer moves the bike from under you to the outside of the corner and this establishes the lean.

Simply The Center of the wheel has a longer circumference than the edge, and since they make the same number of revolutions at the same time, you can think of the Center as moving ahead of the edge
