I’ve been retired for 9 months now and one of my goals when I retired was to lose some weight. Being stressed at work and chained to a desk made it very hard for me to focus on changing my eating habits. I’m proud to say that I’ve now lost 43lbs. 😀
Congratulations! That is a great accomplishment. Losing weight is at the top of my list when I retire. I’m just too mentally and physically exhausted after work to do anything other than fix dinner and clean up.
I really have to stop the news . It's honestly affecting my daily life, and I feel stressed watching it. I will not save the world, but I can save myself .
I really believe if each person took care of the people in their immediate surroundings and control the variables they have control over, societal problems would be mitigated. I stay away from watching the news too!
Im retired almost 2 weeks, and instead of what Im NOT doing, I find the one thing I AM doing is spending more time with and helping friends/family. When I worked, I couldn't offer help, as I just didn't have the time or energy. Now, Im happy to help a friend who is recovering from surgery and help my daughter with my grandaughter. Now, I have time and energy for relationships.
I have stopped being our family's "Cruise Director". It's been a process, but I can't make everything magical anymore. It's time for me to quit worrying if "everyone is having a good time". Whew. Now I can relax and have some fun!
Nailed it! Retired just over a year. I rarely drive over the speed limit anymore since I give myself more time to get there safely. I choose not to spend time with people who don't respect or fulfill me, even if they are family. I don't buy much and really think about whether I need something before buying it. Sold my house and moved to an apartment (rental). Freed up equity to retire early, saves on home maintenance costs plus time and energy (no more snow shovelling!), and makes it easier to travel when I want to. Loving it!
Been retired 3 years, turning 60 in 5 months and like you, I don't do stuff that I don't want to. This week I have a cold so I used Walmart pick up to load up on meds and have kept to myself. Unlike the working days of feeling guilty for calling in sick for 1 day, not to mention 2 or even 3! It's been about a week of having a cold and I think I am just about over it by staying home and resting! Disconnecting from the news, especially last month was a huge weight off my shoulder and now my new life skill!
Amen! I’m on the verge of Throwing in the towel and Telling my employer I quit , hello retirement . 780’days to go but not sure I’ll make it til then. Once a week I get rid of “stuff”( can’t believe I spent sooo much money on crap over the decades- I could be retired now if input that money in an ETF)
I had planned to work until 59 1/2, but I didn't make it! I just couldn't do it anymore. I also would be much better off financially if I had not bought so much stuff in my younger days. If only we could go back and tell our younger selves! 😄
Cutting back on news. Stay low on weekends. I don’t hurry much anymore. It becomes a habit. It took me a few years to slow down. Your video really reminded me of how I was and now how I am getting to slow down.
I'm certainly looking forward to getting rid of my work uniform - not only will it clear space in my wardrobe but will hopefully get rid of some bad memories too.
Happy Birthday Julie! This resonates so much with us. Our home and property owns us, and we are so done letting it control our lives. We are starting the decluttering process. We are hoping we can break the habit of owning stuff. We absolutely fall in the camp about feeling selfish when we do anything for ourselves. Us relocating, we know a lot of people in our close circle think we are being selfish moving away from our family.
@@HappyonMonday That's what we keep trying to tell them. If we can retire 7 years earlier, it means we can spend more time with them then a few hours here and there.
Take your time because you control your time. Is most important to me. When I schedule a doctor's appointment it's mid day, I'm not rushing to get up but do it at my leisure.
2-1/2 years into semi retirement (I still sub now and then at school)…. embracing the ‘slow living’ and more minimalist lifestyle more and more. I’ve found I don’t miss ANYTHING I’ve donated or thrown out 👍
Julie you made me smile many times. I retired at 57 after 32 years of teaching high school English and loved it for the most part. I am still somewhat materialistic but it is waning. Who do I want to impress anymore? They all know I did well. I have planned every 3 years to do a nice trip but that is it. I still do weekly restaurants but less than before. Your videos are very similar to what I am learning about myself too. 😊
One additional area I haven’t been doing most days is setting an alarm clock. I go to bed when I want and sleep until I naturally wake up. I feel like a much better version of myself due to quality sleep. I have so much more empathy for those who are rushing around like I used to. I definitely agree with the list you shared. My favorite is making plans on the week days and staying in Saturday and Sunday (other than church).
I agree! I've only had to set an alarm twice since I retired! Once for a dr. apt. and once to catch a flight! I also have been getting the best quality sleep! 😃
I no longer Bank a bunch of PTO from the job that I still need to keep instead I sprinkle time off every month. I started living my retirement plan this year, even though my family needs me to keep my full-time job. I decided I wasn’t going to wait till I retire to start my retirement plan.
I stopped going to parties and other social functions that I really did not want to attend. I used to go and have a miserable time. Now I very politely decline.
I stopped doing all of the same 5 things as you. I laughed out loud when you said you like being ignorant. I do the same about not watching the news. I watching you as drive across the country. This is how I started watching you. Lastly, everyday is Saturday YAY❤❤❤❤
Great video. I don’t do all the things you mentioned anymore either. I live in metro Phoenix and surrounded by very large high schools, middle and elementary schools, I wait to go out and run errands after they are all safely tucked away in class and mommy and daddy have gotten to work. Then it’s my time. I haven’t gone out on the weekends in years. Not worth it.

Spot on with every point. We are "time rich" as retired teachers. I like not having to drive anywhere if the weather is bad. Usually school was cancelled, but not always. And Seinfeld, the music channels, and The Waltons are definitely better than the news!
I agree! I hated it when we had a 2 hour delay. I would spend the 2 hours shoveling my driveway. Now I'll just wrap up in a blanket and enjoy some coffee! I love Seinfeld! 😀
I am 58 years old and I shall retire on March. My work for 31 years is interesting and satisfying, but also stressful. Yours posts encourage me a lot. I get prepared financially and personally, I do all the right stuff, and still have my fears.
Great video ☺I agree with all of these points. I retired 3 months ago and my husband retired 8 months ago. We figured out the best days to go do grocery shopping and run errands and it's so nice to do midday walks/hikes when nobody else is around! Now that Winter is here we will be having a big clear out although we are fairly minimal in our possessions, it's still something that needs to be done regularly. I regularly forget what day of the week it is now and rarely look at my watch!LOL The best is not having to get up at a certain time and letting your body wake up naturally. This has done wonders for my mood and energy levels. I don't watch any sort of news or read any either. It's quite liberating and does wonders for keeping my anxiety levels down.
I haven’t heard the book Boundaries in 20+ years… I also attended Henry Cloud’s Boundary seminars, made a huge difference in dealing with people/family. Gosh, I love working, plan on doing it at least until 70. I have my own business so it’s easy to go at my own pace. Valuable Video, thanks for the time and effort!
I’m 59 and I retired 7 months ago (not planned, but when I lost my job I said, screw it im not going back to work). I agree with everything you mentioned here and I do them all (I love the “every day is Saturday”). The one thing I need to work on is staying off of social media.
Hi, Julie! Great video--ditto on all five things, but especially #5! I don't watch any of the news and I really don't want to know, because I'm 99.9% sure that whatever it is would make my blood pressure go up, heh! When I was in the Air Force, I had a relatively high-conflict lifestyle, especially as I got older and got promoted and got responsible for more people and more stuff going on. Always problems, always pressures. Then I taught in the high schools, and my conflict level went right up the old Escalator of Doom! Dealing with absolutely horrible, unbelievably coddled, ignorant and arrogant high school students whom I, quite frankly, couldn't stand the sight of in the absence of any help from the front office, from the school board, from the teachers' union, or from ANYBODY really was very, very taxing. You've heard of the school-to-prison pipeline? It's not a myth! The things that went on in that school--oh, man, don't get me started. Anyway, I'm ten years down the road from my old life and it still feels like I just stopped hitting my head with a hammer--feels so GOOD! Heh!
@tophatbanjo That's awesome!! Yes, I don't watch the news anymore! Too depressing! I'm glad you got away from your high stress jobs and are happy now and enjoying life! ☺️
I am LOVING your content, Julie! I'm 45 and hoping to early retire around the age of 47 or 48. You are a true inspiration and your videos keep me motivated. Enjoy your day! 🙂
I’ve thought for years that the TV news is only fires, cars crashing through shops and houses and politics. I can’t resist watching the first 5 minutes but I should stop, good suggestion.
When I retired, my plan was to get rid of a little "junk" every day. Eleven months later, I'm still looking at most of it. It's a little overwhelming. I know I just need to get started. Here's a quote I need to remind myself, "Eat the elephant one bite at a time."
I only watch World News Tonight now because it is just the news without the "analysis" by talking heads. There's a huge difference between watching actual journalistic news as opposed to opinionated "guests" and debates.
When I was mall walking after work, I would speed up to get past slower walkers. You know I was counting steps and miles. I passed these two women, and I pissed them off, like I was competing with them. I tried to go a different direction as I could just see the steam rising, lol.
Haha, I'm 74 (retired 4 1/2 yrs now), and still trying to figure out what I wanna do exactly! My household, husband and 2 kitties take all my time, lol! But that's ok!
I don't explain myself or answer questions that I don't want to answer anymore. I enjoy going to the store as it is social and a chance to be kind to others. I don't watch the news and I didn't bother talking about the election, that drove a few people bonkers 😂 The great thing is the relationships I want to invest in have grown! If it is a real relationship, there are phone calls and/or visits. Great video! 🎉
I invest a half hour each night watching the Nightly News with Lester Holt. Occasionally, I channel surf and land on the station that starts with F and ends with X. There is so much hate and stretching of the facts coming out of their mouths. I have to fight off the gag reflex so I don't lose my dinner. It is sickening! Therefore, I stick with Lester. He is fair and does not put a slant on the news. It's also uplifting to hear about a good news event at the end of the broadcast.
My favorite part of this video was your stance on the news. I used to always watch the news networks but now just scan the headlines of the opposing factions as in FOX,CNN, News Nation and msnbc etc. it just stokes hate and fear as far as I am concerned to delve beyond these headlines. A journey of positivity is definitely helped along by removing these negative forces from your life. Find what makes you happy and embrace it with both arms. Life is too short not to. 11k subscribers and going ⬆. Nice 👍🏻🌹
I've put my resignation in 🎉 I can't wait until I retire in February I've found your experience and advice inspiring ❤ I live in the UK so some of the financial aspects are different, but I've found it very interesting on how the USA supports retirees Please keep up the wonderful channel 👍🏻
Hello again, I think your #1 and #5 are what I wasnt to comment on the most. On #1, I hope you saw the irony, in your "life is too short" and then " I have lots of time" aspect on the comment. On #5 I do more or less agree. Befort the election I watched a ton of MSNBC. Since then hardly any. It does impact my mental health, watching a ton of stuff that I dont have much ability to chanbge, and I see will negatively impact us. I will stay informed. But not to a point that I have to watch a lot of interviews. Take for instance today. The leader in South Korea issued martial law. Now how am I going to change that? And yes it does worry me. And that is today Every day has another news event. On the others, I hink I agree with it all. But be a little careful on #4. Sometimes you do need to compromiste to help with the relationships that are important to you. For example perhaps a friend asks if you want to do someting but you would rather not that time. I would suggest coming up with an alternative, orther than the blanket, "no thankyou". But glad you are settling in to the slower life of retierment living.
I was good...up until the news thing... you "like" being ignorant? ... ugh. Otherwise, I have mostly enjoyed your content and I look forward to the next.
Started off good listing why you used to do things, until you listed doing things because you thought they were the right things to do...and then you said you're done and will only do things you want to do....hmmmm please continue to do what is right even if it isn't what you want to do.
Of course I still do things that are the right thing to do. What I meant is more that I thought I should always say yes when people ask me for favors because it was the right thing to do.
#5 hits home. You don't have to be retired to do it. Turn that garbage off and your day will be better. All they show is negative events, and feed your mind with garbage thoughts that they want us to absorb. I stopped watching during covid as it was making me mentally ill to watch TV

When I retired, my plan was to get rid of a little "junk" every day. Eleven months later, I'm still looking at most of it. It's a little overwhelming. I know I just need to get started. Here's a quote I need to remind myself, "Eat the elephant one bite at a time."
A little at a time is a great way to do it! Great quote!! 😁
I only watch World News Tonight now because it is just the news without the "analysis" by talking heads. There's a huge difference between watching actual journalistic news as opposed to opinionated "guests" and debates.
I’m the opposite on #5. I like to keep informed…see what the other side is doing lol.
I would agree on the others though.
If it doesn't upset you then you should watch it! ☺
When I was mall walking after work, I would speed up to get past slower walkers. You know I was counting steps and miles. I passed these two women, and I pissed them off, like I was competing with them. I tried to go a different direction as I could just see the steam rising, lol.
Oh funny! People are weird about stuff like that. 😆
Haha, I'm 74 (retired 4 1/2 yrs now), and still trying to figure out what I wanna do exactly! My household, husband and 2 kitties take all my time, lol! But that's ok!
It does! Life takes time! I don't know how I got everything done when I was working full time! 😄
Great advice!
Thanks! 😁
I don't explain myself or answer questions that I don't want to answer anymore.
I enjoy going to the store as it is social and a chance to be kind to others.
I don't watch the news and I didn't bother talking about the election, that drove a few people bonkers 😂
The great thing is the relationships I want to invest in have grown! If it is a real relationship, there are phone calls and/or visits.
Great video! 🎉
That's awesome! I also didn't talk about the election. Relationships are what's important! Thank you! ☺
That's great! It's nice to hear that he has good news at the end! 🙂
World News Tonight does the same at the end of their show. Love David Muir! 😊
I'm one year in retirement already 🎉🎂🍻
Yay! Congrats!! 🎉
3 years here, everything she stated is true. Declutter too by selling, donating and tossing.
Nice 👍🏻🌹
Thank you I totally agree!! I'm all about positivity and the news is so negative! 🙂
@ Our lives are better for it Julie… absolutely so 🌹👍🏻👍🏻
I've put my resignation in 🎉
I can't wait until I retire in February
I've found your experience and advice inspiring ❤
I live in the UK so some of the financial aspects are different, but I've found it very interesting on how the USA supports retirees
Please keep up the wonderful channel 👍🏻
Congratulations on your upcoming retirement!
Yay and congrats!!! 🎉 Thank you so much! ☺
I stopped watching the news .
It's depressing! 😕
Where are good travel deals?
I found our Mexico trip through Expedia. It's really having the time to search for the deals and the ability to travel any time! 😁
@HappyonMonday I hear playa del Carmen is reasonable have you been there? I'm looking into it!
@lizadivine3785 I have not been there but I've heard that too!
Great video…I think we were separated at birth…I agree with everything….
Thank you! Are you my long lost twin? 🤣
@ I think so😂
Hello again, I think your #1 and #5 are what I wasnt to comment on the most.
😆 Yes, the news is just depressing. I do compromise, but I won't say yes out of obligation any more! Thanks! ☺
I was good...up until the news thing... you "like" being ignorant? ... ugh. Otherwise, I have mostly enjoyed your content and I look forward to the next.
It just makes me sad and worried to watch the news!
Started off good listing why you used to do things, until you listed doing things because you thought they were the right things to do...and then you said you're done and will only do things you want to do....hmmmm
please continue to do what is right even if it isn't what you want to do.
Of course I still do things that are the right thing to do. What I meant is more that I thought I should always say yes when people ask me for favors because it was the right thing to do.
Dont watch daily news in my. City. Same ole sh''$,t
#5 hits home. You don't have to be retired to do it. Turn that garbage off and your day will be better. All they show is negative events, and feed your mind with garbage thoughts that they want us to absorb. I stopped watching during covid as it was making me mentally ill to watch TV
Absolutely!! 👍
I don't watch the news either
You're too pretty to have such a scary thumbnail pic ! That must be AI generated
🤣 Nope, that's just me! 😄
