At 1:15 it sounds pristine, at 3:45 it sounds blown, at 8:05 it sounds like a smaller speaker, at 10:25 it sounds like a cell phone speaker, and at 11:25 it sounds like a birthday card
I heard it too. Sounds like a very faint octave/fuzz. Johan, you should have done this "slice and dice" episode for Halloween! LOL! At the very end once you killed the dust cap it just sounded like an electric kazoo/fart. Rock on bro!
6:09 you made it vibrate at an octave lower than what you played! It sounds like you have an octave pedal along with your actual melody line. That is so cool
I've found that to be the case too. One of my marshall speakers had a tear in it for years and I didn't even know until I decided to change the grill cloth one day
Let's go !!!!!! When I was a kid in the 80s I patched my guitar into my dad's stereo and it was one of the best sounds I had back then 😂😂 perhaps I did it through the phono and I had a ton of gain and the eq🤟🤟
@@edadick6640I would describe it as crunchier, and I like it better like that, honestly, but I'm more of a metal kind of person so my opinion is definitely biased xD
Thanks for teaching me how to make my speakers sound cooler. I had a breakdown and threw 4 speakers but only 2 speakers got torn. now I can use them as bass speakers with extra distortion with a super fuzz pedal that I was thinking about circut bending to get even more distortion.
This was a great video. I saw this done and really it was common in the 60's and early 70's was to slice the speaker with a razor blade..it's how you got distortion from cabs/amps without master volumes. At least we have master volumes on things now. Very interesting video.
Dude you are funny! Lol, hey I enjoyed this video a lot and you, I have to say gave me some really humbling insights into something I would never have thought to explore before. Your speaker lol! Hey thanks for the sacrifice though seriously! This was and is very cool!
11:24 Yeaaah! This is the true demonic guitar sound, the lord of flies himself Beelzebub is summoned in that speaker. Total hell on earth metal! Bathory should have done that
You read my mind man, I’m actually trying that right now. When a small amount of paper made that much noise it seems like that there are some possibilities here. Cheers Stepvan!
"You call that a knife?" I laughed so hard when you pulled that knife out. Once again you made my day Johan! Looks like the speaker was out of phase, it pulls back into the gap whenever you hit a big chord.
Thank you, Johan. What a great concept! 8:34 never would have thought such a speaker remnant could still push sound. Then you remove even more cone - what a trip LOL Cheers!
Old timers used to run razor blades on the speaker cones to make it distort. They don’t have dirt pedals or overdrive channels on amps like we have today. Now even the most basic practice amps have Clean & OD channels.
That was awesome!...best part of the video we as when u stepped on the cord and pulled it out of the guitar!..... I busted out laughing!.....great channel john!... Love what you do brother!...
Such a cool video on something I’ve always wondered about! Would make an interesting pedal idea. Also...It’s like the speaker’s playing and losing at a game of strip poker
8:59 "Ah fuck." 😂😂 Hate that when it happens. Sounded really good sliced actually, before the cone was torn up. After it sounded like my blown out car speakers haha.
I'm going to have to keep a "fucked up" cab or two for special purposes! I loved it with just a couple chunks missing, and then with just a bit of dust cap left. Really cool.
That speaker really hung in there . Just the voice coil had almost Acoustic guitar sound very airy highs. If the voice coil was still Glued to the spider, so it didn't buzz , I could see recording that sound ! Very cool. Johan , Link Ray would be proud!
I have new idea. How about setting the box with speaker ON FIRE while playing that? :-D They did that with piano and it's quite famous... I'm sure the signal would get hotter! Haha
That was awesome. I kinda wanna get some trashed speakers and have a few for those "need that trash geetar sound, man" moments. Surprised how much I liked it at the end of the line!🤣
'Hey bro, which is your favourite Impulse Response?' 'Johan Segeborn's sliced 1x12' 'Lol what?' Seriously, this would make a killer speaker sim to use when recording B-) so we don't have to go mental on a poor speaker like you :p Awesome test, Johan!
Really cutting edge stuff! Thanks for taking a stab at it!
Hahaha, Cheers!
Wicked your mad man i love your vids
Really not though fu Manchu has been doing this for years
Ruby Redz that’s the joke.
Okay okay. Cut it out.
At 1:15 it sounds pristine, at 3:45 it sounds blown, at 8:05 it sounds like a smaller speaker, at 10:25 it sounds like a cell phone speaker, and at 11:25 it sounds like a birthday card
Since I've watched this on my cellphone, well, the whole video sounds like a cellphone speaker... Hahaha
that birthday card tone
just saved me like 10 min lol thx
I would invest in a nicer cell phone if your speakers sound like that
Prehistoricman sounds like a wet fart 💨
The pure joy on your face after each time you cut the speaker just made my day! 😃
Hahaha! I should probably seek help for that ;-)
Or when the entire voice coil ripped off, that put another huge smile on my face :)
Same
He's a god damn psycho
agreed
Would be funny if after like the 8th slice it suddenly sounded like a modern distorted guitar :D
Alright... this relic'ing thing is getting out of hand :P
Hahaha :-)
Johan Segeborn Johan you had me dying at 9:00 ...this happens to me all the time when i play
best comment here!
This is deja vue for me in high school 1969 when we got distortion by cutting holes in the cones
Adjust the Filter with the "slice" knob.
PS: Soon we'll see the sliced speaker simulation pedal.
Hahaha! Trademarked ;-)
@@JohanSegeborn hahaha =) I love your videos, so dope.
I can honestly see that being a very viable idea.
Devi Ever had a fuzz called the Torns Peaker. It doesn't really sound like this but it sounds gnarly and good.
dimauro antonini that’s literally why a certain few fuzz pedals were first invented;)
This most be a Swedish accent😆
Goddamn, rare comment. You make some great content, mate.
he's the guy that put hammers in pianos
For a bit it sounded like you were playing in two octaves. Well done.
Thanks, yeah great lead tone
Sounded like some Ringmod.
Exactly from 4.00
Same here. Very cool effect if one is willing to purposely destroy cheap speakers ;)
Cool! I'm going to go do this to all my speakers.
Lol
Lol I dare you
I've got some Celstion Green-backs I'm gonna do this to.
I wouldn't recommend that lol
The low end is really interesting, mids and high seem to adjust themselves to it. Held itself together better than I was expecting
That speaker had a really good voice coil in it.
honestly that last part with the solo was sick as fuck
Thanks! ;-)
When you solo it gets almost a octave sound during certain stages of the speaker slaughter
Yeah, I thought that sounded really cool
Yep, 6:09 very interesting.
yea i guess because the loose pieces vibrate and gives it different emphasise on harmonics
6:00 ~ 7:00 sounds like theres an octave or some kind of effect that makes your guitar sound double. Its pretty interesting.
Ok im not crazy for hearing it also.
I heard it too. Sounds like a very faint octave/fuzz. Johan, you should have done this "slice and dice" episode for Halloween! LOL! At the very end once you killed the dust cap it just sounded like an electric kazoo/fart. Rock on bro!
Rock on brother!
Yeah, that fattened up the tone greatly
That riff's in my head eternally
It is it's own form of hell...
Love the subharmonic content that's happening half way through the video when you're playing single notes. Crazy stuff!
6:09 you made it vibrate at an octave lower than what you played! It sounds like you have an octave pedal along with your actual melody line. That is so cool
Well, I'll never hesitate to buy a speaker with a small tear in it again. It didn't even sound different until about the fourth cut!
I've found that to be the case too. One of my marshall speakers had a tear in it for years and I didn't even know until I decided to change the grill cloth one day
Good bit of duct tape too will sort out any hole, not worth throwing away a good Celestion or somesuch
@@disobey81 Or masking tape
I think you might have voided the speaker’s warranty ;)
Hahaha ;-)
Johan, I dont I have ever seen you smile so much as when you are cutting those speakers
Let's go !!!!!!

Eye opener. You can make and modify a sound ANY WAY YOU CAN THINK OF. This is why music is so fascinating to me
Rumor Has It The Kinks were the first ones to do that. I always wanted to do that. Now I don't have to. Have a good day
Cool never heard of him or them now I got something to Google. Thanks for the info.
@@guitarocd9984 First guy to get his song banned from playing on the radio too. People thought Rumble would cause riots.
@MarkKiddGuitar okay Rumble. It did sound the same as this experiment. That was interesting.
@@guitarocd9984 Check out track : Rumble . Often credited as the first with a sliced speaker. Legendary stuff !!!
Yeah that was cool. learn something new everyday.
This is how the Kings had their sound on "you really got me", I was told.
it actually sounded much better sliced than when it wasn't damaged
Indeed!
You guys just like distortion
@@speakersr-lyefaudio6830 No, it just sounds more open.

Thanks for teaching me how to make my speakers sound cooler. I had a breakdown and threw 4 speakers but only 2 speakers got torn. now I can use them as bass speakers with extra distortion with a super fuzz pedal that I was thinking about circut bending to get even more distortion.
It sounded more broken in when sliced which was nice.
But sounded completely shrill when torn completely. Great comparison!
This was a great video. I saw this done and really it was common in the 60's and early 70's was to slice the speaker with a razor blade..it's how you got distortion from cabs/amps without master volumes. At least we have master volumes on things now. Very interesting video.
It sounds like an octave pedal at certain points
Sounds brighter with every cut🌥️🌤️🌞
The last alteration sounds awesome!!! Viva la dust cap!
that guitar is gorgeous
A look to the very beginning of the guitar distortion and how this was made. Great video.
this is exactly the type of video why i love this channel =) johan the mad professor, keep em coming
Glad to hear it Capt’n!
Some videos it's just easy to tell you're having a good time. This was so great :)
This actually has a really cool sound
I thought it would have been done after the first slice but the speaker held up a lot longer than anticipated! Cool!
This is sound science. This is how you make something clear for everyone.
Cool octave effect! and compression effect
Man this was a fun experiment to watch. You looked like you enjoyed every stab of that knife!
I have never seen you have so much fun!
The last minute is the best part :)
This is fascinating! You can hear the cone flapping against itself.

You looked like such a big kid at 8:30. The whole video was awesome. Keep up the videos!
you could probably get the "blown" sounds non destructively by taping pieces of paper against the dust cap to rattle around
Now that is how to get that real old vintage vinyl sound! 🎸😄
You should make an "alternative cone" for the voice coil and see how that sounds. Possibly shipping tape?
You read my mind man, I’m actually trying that right now. When a small amount of paper made that much noise it seems like that there are some possibilities here. Cheers Stepvan!

I think the voice coil and/or dust cap can sound really good layered with the unaltered speaker. Will help cut thru the mix

Impulse responses don't capture non-linear effects.
Almost like a bass cut the more it gets torn up, eventually it gets to nasal but somewhere in the middle it's really nice and clear sounding.

it was oddly satisfying to see the knife slice into the speaker
Well, that was interesting, I guess next step is sliced cab convolutions
Death by a Thousand Cuts...
