Back in the day, way back in the day, my mom made and wore this very poncho to all my brother's football games so he could find her in the stands. This brought back so much fun memories. Mahalo ( Thank you in Hawaiian).

Back in 1978 my Mom wore a pumpkin color poncho in a sea of blue and white so my brother who played football could find her in the football stand. It was this very same poncho. Thanks for bringing back memories for me❤

Um... she said, " platform shoes and bell bottoms "... and hip huggers were already here from the '60s, along with the bell bottoms and hot pants. She can't possibly hit upon everything... the energy crisis, the long long gas lines, and all the gas stations that had signs up that read "no gas" and the fact that listening to the news was not that the news was getting worse and worse as if the world was getting worse and worse, it was just that the news was Becoming more graphic because They were not keeping certain things so silent anymore, such as domestic violence, child abuse and neglect, kidnappings and rapes of kids and women 'n there seemed to be a run on nurses being raped and murdered as well.
These were days the late 60s/early 70s Public Service ads with the slyly worded anti child abuse campaign slogan, "children should be seen and not HURT", aimed sharply at the very parents from the old "children should be seen and not HEARD" generation who were quick to slap, smack, backhand, whip or beat their kids for any ol' reason, even their own Mercurial mood or temper after a bad day at work or a traffic ticket. News and TV was gettin' gritty.
It was a time when the concept of serial homicide was first discussed in a lecture in England and then the term, " serial killer " had began to be used on the news all around the world soon after. The more thorough you try to be about the '70s, the uglier it gets.

This really is a beautiful pattern and I love how you frequently have oops moments and make mistakes. It helps me feel better when I keep having oops moments. That being said, Row 16 wasn't done right...however it still looks beautiful and no one will be able to tell! Something that is great about crochet. If you start out doing it wrong, just keep doing it the same way. No one will ever know! ❤😂❤

It must have been at the end of 1968/1969 and I was in elementary school. My parents had a friend coming over wearing this kind of poncho very often. She was named “little crotchet blanket” behind her back, in German: Häkeldeckchen :-) I loved this poncho and asked my grandmother to crotchet me one. What she gladly did.

Oh what a lovely poncho, and I love the green colour choice so much. And! And it looks lovely on you! Just perfect for this time of year.
Being quite tall myself I'd likely would have to increase the pattern a little bit widthwise, and also break up the granny squares stitch pattern section with an insert of part of the green repeat section to lengthen the number of rows. Sadly the cheap yarns available in larger stores here in the UK are just that, cheap, and look even more so after a couple of washes. Thankfully I found a lovely recycled acrylic yarn in a local fabric shop, in a nice range of colours, a great feel to it and not at all splitty. I will give this poncho a go after the filet café curtains I'm halfway through for my kitchen curtains. I did wonder what to do next, this will be a nice and easy break from the fine cotton thread yarn, and something practical for the British summer 🌞.
Thank you so much for this video, it was such fun to watch! ❤️

I have been crocheting for 12 years, and I know how to do most of the things. For some reason, I have never, EVER had to use or been shown a stacked single. It's just never come up as an alternative to a double or treble. I absolutely hate the way that the chains leave a huge floppy gap. This looks so much cleaner and fuller. Thank you so much for the lesson! I just found your channel last week and I've been making my way through some of your mystery pattern videos. The bag turned out super! I love your channel & seeing you bring these older vintage patterns back to life. Im almost done watching it through first & will watch again as I make it along with you. Im a visual learner after my TBI so I really appreciate you going step by step. I also just learned about the stacked single crochets from you on the ends & I agree, it looks so much nicer. I'll only do that from now on. In the 70's I was a little girl & I can still see my ponchos I would wear all the time. I think in a box I still have my store bought navy blue one that had rows of flowers. Mine had slits where you could put your hands through instead of the sides lifting up when you needed to use your hands or lift your arms. Ive not seen anyone make ponchos current day that has those slits. Im curious in your search through old patterns if you've ever run across one like that. Id love to someday see a tutorial on that. I dont trust myself creatively to put that into a pattern myself. Sorry for the long comment but have a question out of curiosity. Do you knot your yarn ends together after a color change before weaving them in? I do knot them first, just concerned after many washings & wear the ends might start coming loose. I know I'm probably committing some kind of crochet sin. 😂 I hope you continue your channel with these vintage patterns for a long, long time.
PS- If Im a "fluffier" person shall I say 😉 do I just go up some hook sizes or increase the original chain, therefore increasing the length of each row?

    • @justvintagecrochet
      @justvintagecrochet  Рік тому +3

first, Thank you so very much your your kind words :)
I do not knot the ends, but I also don't believe in crochet sins lol, I believe that Crochet has a theory but no rules, we are free to do things how ever we want and how ever works for us :) I think knotting them if 100% fine
I'm happy to look out for a poncho just like that , and will be very happy to make it :)
I thank you so much for your continued support by the way ... you take care

Being born in the early 60s I would be about the right age to have worn something like this. I, however, would imagine that the colour combinations I'd have probably ended up with would have been orange and purple 😁 everything in the UK in the 70s seemed to be orange and purple. Your green was lovely too and would have also been used but more than likely teamed with a bright mustard colour!! Yikes! I'm having flashbacks to psychedelic rainbow days of teenage wardrobe! ☺😍. Beautiful poncho. Thanks for sharing these lovely retro patterns. Can't wait to see what's next. I might have a few old patterns from the 70s/80s hanging about somewhere, I'll have to dig them out. For the issue of the granny row not ending right. Here's what I did.
Either ch 3 or do the stacked sc, dc in next stitch, ch 3, skip 3, then 1 dc in each of next 4 stitches, ch3 and continue pattern to the end where you will wind up with the 6 needed for the end. The next row will end with 2dc and so forth until you have the right amount of rows.
The pattern has to have 120 stitches to match the beginning, and as it was, it was ending with 121. I always count my stitches every few rows just to make sure I'm not missing one or adding. After a lifetime of making mistakes it's much quicker to count than redo rows.
Happy hooking and thank you for the pattern 😊

Oh my gosh!! I’m for sure making this one!! I was a freshman in 1971! And i was crocheting, but we didn’t have access like now! I think most my patterns came from Women’s Day magazine. Keep up sharing patterns! Just love this channel!❤❤

Your tutorial is so clear and concise. I love your poncho. I've only crocheted one garment (following a tutorial) in my life. I would love to try this, but I'm 5'8" and this would look rather short on me.

Love love love this! The only thing I’d do different is tighten up the neck line as this would be too wide for me. Excited to make it!😊

Thank you so much for sharing and showing this lovely pattern. I was just looking for a poncho to make for a friend.
    So this poncho is great!
One thing to check: row 16 says, 2 sc in ch2 space, and 1 sc in each of next two sc. and not chain 2.
    Greetings. 😉

To change color I end of the row by breaking yarn and pulling through the loop. I start the next row, then work with both ends over the 'v' of the stitches. This secures the ends as I go. This makes each section secure. If one yarn snags and breaks, only one section can unravel.😊
