    Hadn't seen a Propper review for these since tungsten went live back in 2023. Very comforting to see you guys have faithful impressions of this headphone considering I was one of the first people to place a quick rather rushed order for them! Also worth pointing out for other people, that Ryan from Modhouse does also offer a wooden finish instead of the normal/coloured metal. I chose Paduok wood for mine. Great review, and very exited to get mine to try

    This has been my default headphone to use at home (and sometimes on-the-go). It is simply wonderful and if you want endgame-level performance below $2k, I would recommend the single sided version. I can wear them for hours and they even made me cry on a few occasions. If you have a $2k budget for an entire set up, get single sided and then buy a douk U5($50) and a topping E50 ($220). That stack is easily the cheapest I've found that runs Tungsten to it's fullest.

      According to RME it's maximum output level is 18.4V RMS on balanced output. It should drive the Tungsten to around 111dB SPL peak. I think that's plenty unless you listen very loud or plan to add tons of bass with EQ.

    • @Aquiiin
      @Aquiiin 4 місяці тому

      @n0xt it's hard for me to understand the relationship between what RME describes as the technical abilities and what the Tungsten might need.
      Is that for the main speaker outs or the headphone balanced outs?
      And what about Wattage?
      Seems the Tungsten are used on some Speaker Outputs right?
      I am interested tobuse them in a mastering and mixing/producing scenario in the studio.

    • @n0xt
      @n0xt 4 місяці тому +3

      @@Aquiiin I recommend you watching another video on this channel which explains the basics of headphone amplifiers, their power and volume. It was uploaded around March last year.
      In my previous comment I was talking about the balanced headphone output.
      You can calculate the power from the P=U^2/R equation. 18.4V at 160 Ohm load equals to around 2.1W. You can confirm that with RME support to be sure, but it lines up with their measurements (page 95 in the manual).
      I don't recommend using a speaker amplifier to drive any headphones unless you are 100% sure of what you are doing.
      I'm not sure if mixing and mastering requires even more headroom. If you listen at around 85dB SPL, then the RME will have around 25dB of headroom.

  • @oblio44
    @oblio44 5 місяців тому +1

    I placed my order on December 22, 2023 and I expect my Tungsten (SS) to arrive in March.
    I will run them on my current setup which is the Gustard A26 DAC which has an output of 5 volts (balanced) and my amp is the Burson Soloist 3X Performance which has up to 28 volts on high gain (balanced).
    From everything I have read about the Tungsten, my setup will drive them easily with voltage & current to spare.
    I am posting this because I think the Gustard A26 DAC (or Gustard R26) combined with the Burson 3XP offers nice value compared to most other DACs and amps with similar specs. Combined the cost is about $2,500. Both are fantastic! IMO, of course.
    Resolve, I really appreciate your commentary and explanations on this very technical shit!!! I learn a lot.

      Yeah I'm moving away from this kind of language because it's more confusing for people than it is helpful. But for that quality, I'd say Focals still do this best, and it's kind of a wash for the planars. But with the tungsten and HE-6, if you have an imperfect seal it will sound more impactful down low (even just a tiny bit), where the LCD-4 will not.

      To me, the 6-screw HE-6 is appreciably punchier than the LCD-4, with and without EQ-say 10/10 vs. 7.5/10. If Resolve has been using the HE-6 as a regular reference and he thinks it and the Tungsten are about tied, that’s a VERY high compliment.
      I can’t speak for the Utopia, but Focal open-backs generally have worse sub-bass extension and don’t respond as well to a bass boost. My OG Clear was about as punchy as the HE-6, but its bass got quite muddy with the 6dB shelf that I prefer, and it clipped even at comfortable listening levels with certain tracks (e.g. “Foster Care” by Burial). I’m sure the Utopia’s better, but it still rolls off below 50 Hz. Whether this matters to you would depend on your preferences and the kind of music you listen to.

    There is a sound difference between SS and DS, but DS is much easier to drive than SS. So if you thought the DS was hard to drive, SS is nearly impossible on anything but the strongeest amps. Susvara seems easy in comparison.

    • @c34webb
      @c34webb 3 місяці тому

      The SS and DS are very close in power/current/voltage needed.

      SS takes more power trying them side by side at CanJam. It was quite a bit more, but that was compared to each other. Comparing to all headphones, yes they are closer to each other on that scale than to other headphones. So you are right from that perspective.

    I got the impression that you intentionally focused mostly on objective aspects and FR, and abstained to use very specific “audiophile” terms for describing subjective quality. And it probably is going to be your new approach for upcoming reviews? If it’s the case it absolutely makes sense. You try to understand how objective performance, affects these so called subjective properties. As someone that never does EQ and some of my fav headphones have such messed up FR, I appreciate this new approach more. Talking about facts. Your objective oriented evaluations will be more informative (at least for me) since we all preserve subjective aspects very differently.

    • @ResolveReviews

      Strictly speaking... a peak IS a resonance. But if you're talking about anything to do with group delay, that's usually people looking at certain data and making the wrong conclusions from it - to determine if there are issues that make a headphone non-minimum phase you want to look at EXCESS group delay, and I put that in the forum post in the description. It's all fairly normal with this one.

      @@staticosaur I listened to several flagship headphones present (utopia, LCD-5, empyrean II, d8000 pro, & Spirit Torino's Valkyria) and found most of those to be better overall. Empyrean II did have less bass clarity than the tungsten but mids and treble were more transparent with better emotion. LCD-5 was higher resolution than the tungsten though I'm not a fan of the tuning. Utopia and d8000 pro were a step ahead of the tungsten in just about every category for me. The Valkyria was my favorite of the show, but is way too expensive.
      At home I have an lcd-xc and didn't find the tungsten to sound more resolving than that, so while the tungsten seems relatively competitive at the price point I didn't notice it having flagship level sound quality.
