Sorry, I disagree with much of your analysis particularly the part that you refer to a cartoonish acapella breakdown. Unfortunately you miss the mark culturally of the style used which most artists are uncapable of doing. En Vogue is one of the exceptions because they have the vocals and mean vocals to sing at such a high level without the music. Have you reacted to "Hold On"? Your review was strange to say the least.
Bruh, ‘cartoonish voice’, REALLY? Ok I guess you’re really referring to the speaking part when she starts out, ‘yessir…’, but your timing was strange in that you paused right after the a cappella vocal ‘breakdown’, which is actually musically impressive & shows their superior harmonizing skills compared to any female vocal group of their time. They were in the trading of Aretha’s backing vocalists who included her sister, LaBelle, the vocal group named after & led by Patti, & the Pointer Sisters who had a jazz background & brought that prowess to modern r&b genre. En Vogue was really close to the level of such groups as Boyz to Men Manhattan Transfer & Take Six, & gospel group Commissioned, in terms of the precise harmonies they tackled & executed. Destiny’s Chid sort of followed their lead.
Impeccable harmonies!!! One of the most incredible groups to ever do it!! Great review/reaction!!!
The sample is from James Brown's " The Big Pay Back".
nice analysis, like, really nice.
To think they were experimenting like this in the 90s.
Vocal Queens
DO FREE YOUR MIND by them.
