Hey guys! This video is a re-upload because the original version of this episode was no longer viewable. We’ll be posting these re-uploads every Saturday for the next few months. There are still NEW sins videos every Tuesday and Thursday!
10:09 he was taking the quotes off by making her a singer. As in, saying he actually met a singer by giving her a career as a singer to protect his reputation.
For sin 42, Jeremy forgot that the scene wasn't set in 1941. Kane acquired The Inquirer shortly after inheriting control of his fortune around 1888 (age 25, assuming birth in 1863), and soon after he bought the Daily Inquirer. At around 1890, NYC's population was 2.7 million, so rather than 0.24% circulation in 1941, it was actually four times higher.
I always thought that the “I think it would be fun to run a newspaper” 4th wall break, was the cinematic depiction of the scorn the character had in his memoir. I picture several paragraphs being written in the characters memoir filled with disdain, with the Journalist just interpreting it as the 4th wall breaking sneer.
2:25 falsely regarded as a mistake: later in the movie Raymond the butler says he was in the room when Kane said, "Rosebud." He's just not in view in the early shot because it's from his point of view which is close enough to Kane to hear him whisper.
Charlie F. Kaine's story is one about a man who had everyone else in control of his life but him. In retaliation he tried so desperately to control others in a similar vein.
Missed end gag: Kane says his last words then Peter Griffin says "It's his sled! It was his sled from when he was a kid. There. I just saved you 2 boobless hours."
Missed a mistake at 3:55 - no visible breath while young Kane played in the snow. Welles disliked this shot, because it gave away that it was shot in a studio, and not outdoors.
One of my favorite things about this film is the depiction of the wannabe opera singer lover. In modern films, the ignorant film-goer would presume that she has a lovely voice, so the producers would force her to sing absolutely horrible, because they think the audience is stupid. In this film, she sings average, but you'd need to have some proper musical knowledge to realize that; and the only indication the uninitiated is given is from the reactions of the tech crew. She's not the worst thing ever, but she has no business being a star.
"This is like me losing my transformer collection as a kid and saying, "HASBRO" on my deathbed" 😂😂😂 That made me crack up laughing and I nearly spit out my water
I don’t think the snow globe should count, I work at Olive Garden and I’ve seen the glasses fall several feet off the rack bounce several times and then they break
I'd LOVE to see you do this to "2001: A Space Odyssey". Unless you did it already. In which case, "How DARE you be so critical of a cinematic classic!"
Actually, I was just watching a TopTenz video on here that refutes the whole “nobody heard him say Rosebud” claim. Apparently the butler (?), Raymond says at one point that he was there (or at least heard him). It was kind of a throw away scene, so it’s missed by many, but it is mentioned.
1:12 the reason the English is phrased like that is to copy the S. T. Coleridge poem "Kubla Khan": In Xanadu did Kubla Khan / A stately pleasure dome decree
I am so sick of the "No one heard him say 'Rosebud'" plot hole. If you pay attention to dialog early in the film, you hear that Kane's butler was standing on the other side of the bed than the one filmed. And in the widescreen version of the film you can see the bleeding butler when the nurse walks in! Also Orson Wells himself explained that the butler was standing at the bedside of his master more than a dozen times in his later life.
Personally, in spite of the sins presented in this CinemaSins video, I LOVE "Citizen Kane" anyway. It is a true cinematic classic forever. Thank you, Orson Welles!
at 11:03 Yeah those aren't cartoon birds those are pterodactyls, they used the same props from King Kong and just shoved them in here, and hoped no one would notice. Well I noticed
Wait, you did Citizen... Hold on you did... That movie? That movie?! You know no bounds! And this is why I am happy to support you. Never change CinemaSins. Or, like, change when it suits I don't know, I've learned to trust your madness!
Only on CinemaSins do you hear Transformers in a video about a classic movie... But a very appropriate choice with Unicron being voiced by Kane's main man. Haha.
0:15 I think it's called "Radio Picture" because of the R in RKO (Radio-Keith-Orpheum). But then again, RKO was founded after the merge of KAO (Keith-Albee-Orpheum) and FBO (Film Booking Offices of America) under the Radio Corporation of America, better known as "RCA". The purpose of the merger was to create a market for their sound-on film technology, known as the RCA Photophone.
1:12 Ummm, that's proper English, if uncommon usage these days. On top of that, it's probably a nod to the poem "Kubla Khan" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, although I say that realizing that the books don't matter.
Yeah, I can't see anything wrong with that, it's standard English. I guess the cinema sins guy is from the USA and therefore only writes in Americanese.
Thank you. And you're right, it is based on Coleridge. News on the March immediately reminded me of March of the Times... practically identical newsreels with interesting syntax.
@@johnl6192 I think the others misinterpreted what I was trying to say. I do find it to be a beautiful movie but in a technical sense, it is, after all, a jewel of cinematography.

Just to be petty and nitpicking, these "viking boats" are gondolas from Venice, if you feel like, I can also tell you which of the 21 official models they are :)
You miss the point entirely. The greatness of CITIZEN KANE isn't the story (it fails on its initial premise of seeing a man's life through the 'differing' perspectives of the people he touched. As non are actually very different from each other), the greatness of CK is that it amasses all the technical tricks, editorial innovations and especially all Greg Toland's innovative camera techniques into one mind blowing feature film. 2:23 Best Cinema Sins observation. I could say "Jinx" at how we both said "Bullshit / Come on" at the same time. NO ONE heard him say shyt! He died alone.
Originally they revealed the meaning of Rosebud in the movie, it was Hearst's nickname for his second wife but the family threatened to sue Wells if he kept it that way so he changed it to the sled storyline.
Please state the source, because I've never heard of such a thing. Mankowitz knew what Rosebud meant. However, that has no relation to the use of the sled as the main symbol. can you do the Giver please!
Just Dont upload nothing about it is wrong
Thank you!
Let me get this straight, you made this BEFORE Trump won?
In the spirit of having sinned one of the greatest movies of all time I'd like to once again suggest sinning The Godfather as well.
The Godfather is perfection
Every movie has a sin so I’m sure they could find 3
The only flaw in The Godfather I can think of is the missed punch when Sonny is beating up Carlo. Other than that, it’s a darn near perfect movie.
@@johnl6192 There are lot of mistakes in The Godfather. Just google it.

hahahahaha!!!!!!!!
10:09 he was taking the quotes off by making her a singer. As in, saying he actually met a singer by giving her a career as a singer to protect his reputation.
Yes, that sin bugs me. Blinkered pedantry. Kane isn't saying he's going to change a rival newspaper's headlines.
"Wait, there's no cane in Citizen Kane" -Lisa Simpson
They do have citizens in there, so that's something anyway.
7:09 the guy leading those show girls is holding a cane
There's like 50 people with canes in the movie

And way tooo much Kane
@@dominickperez2952 I find this offensive to my very core mister, I hope you have a unpleasant rest of your day.

For sure. I wish they’d do a ton more classic movie sins. Sadly, they probably won’t.
I don’t think the snow globe should count, I work at Olive Garden and I’ve seen the glasses fall several feet off the rack bounce several times and then they break
Yes, perhaps the fall creates small spider cracks that eventually cause it to shatter upon the second or third bounce.
Plus, it was a soft floor.
It's just amazing how it was filmed and the cinematography. It's similar to how films are shot today.
Gregg Toland was the genius cinematographer who was able yo pull off that long focus of Kane playing in the snow.

That sentence is cruel and unusual punishment.
Great video, as always.
The Inquirer's front page is filled with articles about Kane because the Inquirer was Kane's newspaper.
This is probably the most underrated Cinemasins video ever and it's not hard to see why
I agree, it's not hard to see why this video is rated low
I bet in 2019 someone on the Internet would've found records on some insanely obscure sled brand and tied the entire mystery together.
Ending the “Greatest movie ever” with a sound bite from the greatest UA-cam video ever.

No, The Chronicle staff didn’t all leave on the same day. Kane didn’t take the photo until he had hired away the final reporter.
