The lever itself also pushes forwards and pulls back to change up and down gears

Hi, I drove this truck today and and while going uphill the gearbox wouldn't downshift (it would stay in the 6th gear all the time) and I got the CLUTCH OVERLOAD message on the dash in the end. Was I supposed to downshift myself with that switch on the gearstick?
