  • Back in August, we visited Jim Kovaleski while he was in Maine and one of the highlights of the trip was picking and eating these delicious apples. Jim shows us his harvesting methods and gives a brief history on some of the classic cultivars growing at this old Apple Orchard. Stay tuned for Part 2, where Jim presses the apples into juice, for making cider!

Jim is giving me serious Jonny Appleseed vibes because he looks a lot like the illustrations in a book I read many times as a kid. And I bet his pockets are full of seeds too lol great one as usual, Pete!

This is exciting. I did something I said I wouldn’t do: I ordered 2 apple trees and 1 peach tree. They’ll be tough to grow on the Carolina coast, but fresh apples and peaches are tough to beat. I’m just in an apple mood this fall.

There are a few old southern apples that can do well in Coastal Carolina and Georgia and are little/no spray....not many. Horse apple is one...bullet proof August apple that is great for many purposes.....fresh eating, cider, pies. When picked its tart, after two weeks a mellow sweet flavor. Check out the book, Old Southern Apples by Lee Calhoun. A classic!

I want very high quality apples. I went with Sundowner, which is the red version of Pink Lady. It is one of the latest apples and bred in Australia for high heat, so it is one of the few that can tolerate temps of the South.
The other is Winecrisp, which is low chill, scab immune, highly disease resistant, very late, and heat tolerant.
They should give me a chance to grow high quality apples. Old heirlooms are less attractive to me, because I can’t justify growing an apple in such a difficult climate if I can get better stuff in the store. Apples are VERY good this time of year in stores, so for me to go through the effort, they have to be premium varieties.

Growing up in Ontario we had apple trees and were told to tip the eye (bottom of the apple) to the sky. They come off without any resistance.

I planted an apple tree this spring that has grafted branches. I SHOULD get four different types of apples off of the same tree! Hopefully in another year or two I will start to get some fruit.

Dwarf trees, besides being easier to spray, prune, and harvest, usually bear fruit earlier.
