I grew up in South Portland and I used to ride my bike across the Casco Bay Bridge or the veterans bridge and go to the main state pier on commercial Street in Portland. My friend Seth and I would go there most nights and just catch mackerel after mackerel. Sometimes we would catch squid and put them in a big tote of sea water with crabs and other things that we caught down there. I can’t believe you have to have a permit to fish in the ocean now.

Oh that’s awesome! It really is a unique fun experience, especially squid fishing, that never gets old!

@@christheoutsider we used treble hooks and jigged them. Always released them after. You should try Camp Ellis in Saco during lowest tide for stripper!! My biggest was 42” and it gave zero fight. Swam with the hook to the beach. Strangest caught fish in my life.

@@christheoutsider wade out into the water as far you’re comfortable and cast out as far as possible. Let the fresh cut mackerel sink to the bottom with a triangle weight and leave about a foot so it can float up a little. That’s what worked for me. Always caught larger ones. I’ve never caught a bluefish tho. Sometimes eel mostly strippers
