With my experience with transit and I used to maintain a fleet of them is that the rear brakes self adjusting do not work properly as they have to move a lot to adjust 1 notch. What I used to do is take the drum off grind the lip from the edge ,adjust the brake a couple of notches so that I could just slip the drum back on,the handbrake when the van came in was seven notches to put it on and when I had finished it was one or two notches and that’s without adjusting the cable.
Thank you.... I have just done one side. Once I eventually managed to get the drum off I found two plastic stoppers which give access to the shoes and allow you to squeeze them back into their original position allowing the drum to come off as soon as it releases. Hopefully the other side should be easier tomorrow......
my recent mot had failed with handbrake efficiency amoung other stuff, and the guy said about a strip down to solve the 'dragging' on the one side......so this video may well be golden for me....
Great information to all of us up to have a go at our own repairs, Would prefer to see the speeded up parts at normal speed, but not complaining OLD video still relevant today Thanks !
i have to make sure I don't make a boring long drawn out video. That's the reason for the speeded up footage. I ensure the info is watchable so people can follow.
That spring on the cable will help the h/brake release, but it's usually the cable itself or the pivot points for the levers, etc., that seizes up and causes problems (they can actually be too tight on new shoes sometimes). The lever on the shoes should return back when the cable is not connected. It was a good job you did them anyway - looks like those shoes weren't too far off failing. I've seen the friction material detach and cause the brakes to lock up on several occasions.
@@retrorestore you know any good suppliers for transit parts that ship to australia, we get charged exhorbitant amounts over here and because they are not that popular here theirs not a huge amount being wrecked :-)
Hi mate great video really informative just one wee question how is it you adjust the handbrake? My van when the handbrake is fully down the handbrake light stays on unless weighed down with a jumper do you think it will just need adjusted? Cheers
Nice work Martin, i see you have got hold of a knuckle bar looks like a sealey one to me .I think i saw a very quick view of it in one of your other videos ..Oh yes the ford rant.
The Transit is free as a bird now. Your cars are really keeping you busy but at least you are fixing them rather than them just sitting there and rusting away.
retrorestore It sure is and your doing things you enjoy and not things that make you miserable. Still looking for work but not alot out there at the minute so just keeping busy to pass the time.
Can a floor hand-break be changed/converted to an under dash hand-break. I want to make more room between driver seat and passenger seat to access rear of van and want to remove obstacles (floor hand-break). Do you have and video's for this?
From far away in Australia I used this video to reassembly my ford transit brake. It was excellent. Thank you very much.

It's probably the light switch that needs adjusting Harry providing the brakes are not on as well.
just wondering how the por15 and vatcan rust treatment went on the transit. Has any rust returned and which product is better?
All holding up well at the moment Michael.
How hard is it to detach the handbrake cable from the old shoe? Does it just pull out with pliers bud?
Yes it does. if I remember correctly.
Good work martin ! Thumbs up ..
