Great that the parts supplier held his hand up, accepted the fault as his and responded so positively. You must be very relieved because winter is not yet over and you'll need the Niva for a while yet. Super video as always.

A good news story! It's good when the parts supplier acknowledges the mistake AND are dedicated people! Also great to see you got it working again!

Hi, such a relief for you to have a running car again. Great Kudos to your parts guy for admitting a mistake and sending you the correct parts. Many thanks from Nr Liverpool UK.

Hi, here is some random ignition coil trivia. As a Trabant owner, and mechanic of obscure older vehicles I've figured this out over the years.
So your electronic ignition coil had too low of a internal resistance for the points. Anything under 3-4 Ohms(measured on the + & - terminals of the coil) will fry the points. Too low of Ohms, allowed a large amount of current to pass through.
So on a 12v system with points you need a total of 3-4 Ohms, you can use a ballast resistor on the + side of the coil as well if needed.
Might I suggest a Bosch 00012 or a Beru ZS172 has 3.3 Ohm. No resistor required.
Now on a 6v system with points 1.5 Ohms is perfect. On a trabi 600, with 2 coils, and points. I'm running non resistor spark plugs, and wires... Doesn't have enough power to over come firing two coils with a resistor plug.
Lastly most all 12v metal can type points coils were designed for 6 volt. If it says "requires external resistor" its a 6 volt 1.5 ohm type..
Now if you have a + ground vehicle, you can use any type of coil listed above. Just remember that the wires get switched.
If a coil has been ran long wired incorrectly, you can switch it back. Though it will never work perfect again. Its something to do with internal magnetic fields.

At least with the electronic ignition, the engine should (in theory) run better, but what a pain to go through all that work only to find the seller had made an oopsie over the specs of that coil, at least they were decent though and gave you the upgrade, so that is a pluspoint... :)

Used to have a 1980s production Niva in Russia. That car could be repaired with a 10+12 mm spanner and a hammer. The parasitic drain you got, was from a faulty part, but you are more likely to get another from rusted wiring and the loss of mass, or a short on a live cable. They rust out pretty badly.
Its not worth the time to crawl around to find the faulty wiring, I just disconnected the battery after driving it. Later installed a relay at the battery terminals, and a tumbler switch in the interior of the car. Flip the switch off and the battery is isolated, no more parasitic drain, problem solved. Drove it like that for 5 years, till the rear axle literally fell out on a dirt track as it ripped out part of the rusty body. No worries, got another a month later for 1k USD.

Not a parasitic draw... it was just me forgetting to turn the key off! it was in ignition for 24 hours! :)

@@SeasideGarage ahh :)) in that case problem with operator and not the car XD.
Glad you got it running, dont sell it. keep it. If you need cheap parts let me know, I still have contact with guys in russia who can supply them at basically the factory price. Only shipping might be a problem.

That's why they have heated rear windscreens. It keeps your hands warm when pushing the car 🤣
