You guys did a great job on breaking down the pros and cons. You just left out that heavy displacement Mono's are far most strong worthy and do not have to keep an eye of weather system nearly as closet as Cat's do. Plus once a Cat flips its over while a good Mono with great capsizing ratio recovers quickly and roles back up, be a mess you are upright. That to me is a win win. Mono's can chose to depart safely during a medium force storm where Cat's have to wait. Jim Rodgers

Mono motion in open waters is much smoother with a Cat having a washing machine agitation feel because the two hulls are hit by the same wave moments apart. Cats also have potential flex which can damage the bulkheads in big seas.

So true plus Mono's do not have to keep an eye near as close on weather or wait for the perfect weather to set off to ones destination. Cats always have to watch the weather far far more closely once capsized it over. Good Mono's have great capsizing ratios to recover and role back up quickly. Jim Rodgers

It’s simple. Monos are better for sailing, catamarans are better for living. So learn to sail both, then choose based on your goals :)

Loved that little piece! You guys are fun/funny/informative. We did our first charter in 2019, on a monohull, and the gang now wants to do a cat this time so we have a FP40 in May. Would love to see you do a short tutorial about sailing a cat. And yes, Grill on the Hill is the bomb! Keep up the great work.

another awesome video guys. I love the debates between cats and Monos and it often gets quite heated or is very one sided. I think you did a great job at talking about the benefits to both and as you mentioned it truly only comes down to personal preference. As always, stay safe and stay healthy.

For the kind of vessels you compared, it basically boils down to:
    - Do you want to go camping on the water, with a lot of people and occasionally pull on a rope for fun? -> get a catamaran.
    - Do you want to sail and go places without using an engine? -> get a mono.
Things get a lot more interesting with lighter, more performance boats with gennakers etc, where they each get to shine under certain conditions.

Not a fan of premieres. No real reason to them if the video is ready to go, the beauty of youtube is been able to watch the video as and when it suits your own schedule. Just my 2 cents, looking forward to the episode though, always good laughs with you guys.

We went from a Lagoon 470 to a Mono, for several reasons, Number 1, the noise in a heavy sea, scared the wife, the motion also still made us seasick, No2, Hull flexed so cracks all over the Gelcoat. Fixed them, then next heavy sea and they were all back. We made the mistake of fitting a generator and AC, all the extra weight and buy-buy the performance edge.
Was fine until we went to the Med, where getting a berth became a nightmare.
But the bottom line was with the Med weather now being so unpredictable we kept getting caught up in storms and did not feel as safe in the Cat compared to the Mono, may be it was the noise levels or the creaking, but in the end the wife (who is not a sailor) said fine something I feel safe on or it's the end of the sailing. No choice really.

A Catamaran is like a house boat with Sails. A monoull is basically a more economical and classical solution to travel the high seas.

Good stuff fellas 🤙 great video as always!
Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems as though there is no such thing as a "right choice" in sailing. There are definitely wrong choices but as far as the "right choice" seems dictated by personal needs, wants, expectations, ect. I appreciate your open views to both dominate opinions.

    • @SailingVirgins
      @SailingVirgins  3 роки тому

Yes that’s well said. Right and wrong choices are both spoken of in the plural.

The Most convincing part of your argument was the bobbing of the backround on the mono as opposed to the cat !

So you choose the criteria as the main features of a catamaran

Great job, thats what its all about...
But new produktion cat can sail even better now... upwind not better then a mono, but from 70 to 180 I‘m most of the time faster then the monos. Lagoon42 sqaretop with Code0. And if wind gets above 15 kn, upwind not so bad even. So in sum the cat even sails faster.

Monohull any day of the week. Just buy a longer monohull :- 1 You don't need to be a genius to be able to turn a monohull on a dim

Fun vid. Lotsa cool points to a Cat, but they are about as pretty as a hemorrhoid on a hog's ass. One can buy a nice 45' mono for $150k, a cat?$?$
