  • In this video, we explore an RAF Gravesend decoy bunker, Cliffe Quarry cement kilns, anti-tank cones in Cliffe village, an ROC post, Cooling radio station, and Shade House on the High Halstow marshes.
    Please note the kilns were for Portland cement clinker manufacture from chalk and clay, not lime.
    More information on Cooling radio station:

    Nice to see my home town known to be fair 😂 crazy place full of history. I recommend the cliffe woods forest, so so much lost history to do with military and war. Lots of abandoned buildings

    Fascinating video - thank you. I've run round the sea wall today and seen a couple of the places in the video; I guess I ran straight past some of the others without ever knowing they were there.

    An ROC post isnt a shelter. It's a monitoring station for 3 people to record and report the radiation levels.

      But it still served to shelter them whilst they worked

    Great video guys. I was born and raised in High Halstow; Shade House was actually a pub for a time, on and off, and reportedly used by smugglers coming in off the estuary. My Father used it as a pub until the 1950's/1960's, and then it was generally just left to fall into disrepair/used for storage by farmers . You did well to get into it, it was boarded up/completely secured and fenced off for a time as well so completely impenetrable. Probably just as well considering how unsafe it was

      Very interesting, thanks for the information. Had no idea about the pub! Must’ve been a fascinating and atmospheric area to grow up in

    Fab video, these bunkers always have that apocalyptic and eerie feeling, get that when I watch your vids! The casual mention of potential nuclear bombs in the Cold War is just a reminder of how prevalent that worry was during the time. Here's a weird question, are you ever worried about interrupting someone who might be taken refuge inside one of these bunkers, or not really something that is likely to happen?

    • @BeyondthePoint
      @BeyondthePoint  3 роки тому +2

      Hey thanks for commenting! Glad to hear the atmosphere comes across haha. I've rarely ever worried about that believe it or not, although a lot of people do often say that. I think in reality in the UK there's probably much better places to take refuge given the condition and isolated locations of these places. Although we do keep the eyes and ears peeled for any unsavoury types in some of the bigger constructions. We haven't come across anyone so far - fingers crossed 🤞

    Nice video guys! Great to see you both back out there making new discoveries for us to follow! Was that a bit of your own composition on the guitar Liam at the start of the Lime Kiln section? :)

    Love your content guys. Reminds me of my late grandad who used to take me to old bunkers and woods in and around Southend. Can you recommend any good world war 2 books at all?

      Thanks a lot! Hmm I don't read loads, kinda got sick of that at uni - there's loads out there but pick what you want to read about, whether its a certain event or place or if you prefer memoirs over histories etc. I've heard James Holland's Normandy '44 is good. There's also a lot of good local history books around about the Home Front.
