Getting the Board mix right: The delicate notion and application of diversity on nonprofit boards

  • Board diversity is generally viewed as being critical for robust decision-making, particularly when dealing with complexity and uncertainty. Yet could too much diversity can also generate tension and challenge on a board?
    Diversity targets and tools such as skills matrices provide practical means for designing diverse boards, but how do we know what particular targets and capabilities are conducive to effective individual and board level governance?
    Dr Jackie Bettington is a QUT researcher and lecturer in corporate governance, business ethics and boards of directors. In 2015 Jackie completed a Research Masters in which she developed a director financial literacy competency framework for directors serving boards in Australia. Over the past 20 years Jackie has served as a director and chair on a number of nonprofit boards including boards of professional associations, heritage organisations and providers of residential care and support to children and young people. She also has extensive professional experience in information governance law, policy and practice in the public, nonprofit and commercial sectors.
