Being on a seriously low budget, I have no choice but to salvage as much as I possibly can by any means. It sucks but it's a reality for many people. I just can't imagine grinding so much usable material away when you have an option to cut it out. So I was very happy to see that you chose to use your smaller Trim Saw to begin the Pre-Form in order to salvage material for a smaller stone. That nub that you marked to cut away would have been a average large stone for me. I don't get to cut many Large stones (not much larger than that nub). At least not yet. Someday. Thank you for letting that nice corner live for another day and to become a beautiful gemstone on its own someday. :)
I have just finished my 3rd stone it’s such a learning curve., I appreciate your videos so much you have such a calming voice you are simply amazing and I love watching your exceptional cutting and beautiful gems. Thank you.
Really appreciate you making these videos, they have been immensely helpful in learning how to facet on my own. Not only that, but you're a great teacher; well spoken and great at explaining things. Thanks so much!
Mr. Moriarty. You are the master of your trade. Please do not use words like "I am confused, I have not decided yet or lets see if the stone will not brake". No matter which stone you cut it is always breathtaking beauty.
Thank You Steve - I bought an Omni Faceting Machine or Patriot Faceting Machine by Jersey Instruments from Kingsley North and , as a precision machinist, I'm amazed at the design and accuracy, as well as it's price which is half the cost of Ultra Tech's V5 - I'm cutting Ruby roughs to start and have cut an Emerald or step cut stone and now I'm working on a equilateral cut .
Steve very interesting video. I've been faceting with the Ultra Tec V2 for about 52 years. I'm on my second machine. I noticed you don't use a DADS. I swear by it now that I've used it for about three years. My point I thought I'd make on your doping is the use of a Gui Dop. They really help with centering large stones of value. Thanks for the video and have a great day. Randy Worden
How do you determine where the cleavage plane is on the rough? I tried topaz once, and it turned to butter. I figure the cleavage plane was my problem. Thanks.
A product called Honerite, is water additive. Keeps steel from getting surface rust, many use it on sharpening gear, Dimond plates, ect... I don't know if it would have any effect on contamination with stones.. but might be worth shot

Hi @moregems I just wanted to say I have these gyms and they're so beautiful man still rough natural and very very nice and I am trying to find a buyer guaranteed
And my name is Xavier so sorry for so many comments I'm just thinking that if I message you or comment a lot on this video then there will be a higher probability in a bigger chance that you will see my comments and can get in touch with me so I could send you pictures of my gyms / opals / topaz very very beautiful
I have a demantoid garnet over 40 ct, however, has inclusion in the middle, which makes me wonder if it's a good idea to slice it in 3 pieces of 5-10 ct each, or should I simply focus on getting one clean stone and sacrifice the rest of it?. any advice would be appreciated.
Depends on the inclusion. Likely smaller clean will be more valuable but with smaller size you will also loose some color. Not possible to tell without the gem in hand.
are the lap plates you use fairly standard and easy to find? I’m thinking of getting a cheap faceting machine and some rough just to start playing around with but I want to make sure I can get lap plates for the machine…
Can you tell me, were I can get a facettmashine for low budged, in germany? About 5000€ is way too far for me. So is there any market for used ones? Please give me some tips. Thank you for your realy good videos! Greatings from Berlin.
Love the gems you cut, and this huge topaz. Have you tried facets on high quality Yellowstone Moss Agate? See my profile picture for some large stones. I can send some slabs your way...
You can cut for beauty or you can cut for weight. We choose beauty. Average yield ends up about 40%. One big stone is rarer than many small ones. And the color is better when the stone is large.
....You're like the Bob Ross of Gem cutting. extremely relaxing to watch and learn from.
Yes,Steve is very soothing to watch!
Thanks Steve. This is the part of the process nobody takes the time to explain. Trying to see the stone in the stone is the tough part. Great job!
Thanks and you are right the hardest part is before you start cutting.

Thanks Steve to prove us your career it was very nice of you.

Loved the video. Must say i kinda laughed when the beep boop music kicked in lol. You make this stuff look so fun!
hahaha the beep boop music 🤣 -- glad you liked the video
Very nice little setup you got there.
Nice looking gemstone 💎

I'm too old to start now. Love the end results.
Congratulations. Beautiful work
Thanks Asmare
Congratulations. Beautiful work. Thanks for sharing.
Your welcome
I got anxious as you were about to grind off that corner piece you marked, but I also knew that probably would have been some nice ASMR too haha
I really dig your way of teaching
Thanks Garfield
I always wanted to cut colored stones, now that I am retired, I may try it. Thanks for the videos.
Thanks! I love this work.
Thank you for sharing this video
Thank you for your promotion for the V5 Machine. However, I find that is far too expensive for the amature gem cutter.
hello do you have a laser cutting or facetious machine. Cordially
Why cut a 30ct stone? Its too big for a ring or a pendant. What would it be used for?
Thank you for a very instresting video 😊
this stone cutting machine you are selling or not ... I found it small and efficient ... for small spaces
How do you determine where the cleavage plane is on the rough? I tried topaz once, and it turned to butter. I figure the cleavage plane was my problem. Thanks.

Would quick set uv resin help with the dopping process? It doesn't heat as much in my experience as epoxy or wax.
Loving these videos! Got an older UltraTec and wanting to try again... still working on my first stone... When do you spin CW vs CCW?
Is the small flashlight you are using a special kind or just high intensity?
Where you can buy it is listed in the description of this video. It has a dimmer switch to control the intensity.
Hi, please calculate the weight we will not lose 27 carats when cut on saw
Weight loss is correct. The larger blade is also thicker and blue topaz is very dense.

When your stone is giving you issues. Then you try a different direction.

Reminds me of Shamu's pool. 😢😢😢😢R.I.P.😢😢😢😢😢
How many hours it take to cut that opal how much does it cost to cut a stone
I have a chunk of pink tourmaline I would love to have cut into a cushion cut stone. Do you do cutting for the watchers?
Hi Rose! That is not a service we offer, we don't take on any outside cutting work. We only cut the rough that Steve buys for our shop.
Sorry no time to cut for others
I think that music is from Morador. ???

Check for faceting clubs. Idar Oberstein is a faceting center check at the museum there.
Where can I buy a chunk of topaz like that?
If I want to start, is a jade polisher a good starter?
Sorry I am not familiar with this machine
Parabéns pelo vídeo like.
Muito bom parabes nota 10 pra você
I'm actually surprised that Gem Cutting hasn't been taken over by CNC Machines. I guess it will come in due time.

I'm surprised you sit and stand while sawing because the stone jerks each time you alternate.

We're not seeing what you're looking at or why you're grinding it there. 😮😅. I know you lose a lot. 😢 But it looks fun! 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍

That 10" blade is really wobbly !! Its way out of true and should be replaced.... BUT... there's a lot of use left in the rim ...
I got a carved aquamarine
This stone is just screaming it wants to be a shield. It seems some stone will tell you what it wants to become if we just listen ( look ).
That’s so true.
👍👍👍
hello, I can do an internship with you I am in gemmology training in Paris cordially
$570 for that trim saw... unreal... i use a $99 tile saw with a good thin kerf diamond blade.... works great as far as I can see
it looks like allot of dust in the air you should consider a fume hood to keep that junk out of your lungs.
