- A special day for all connected with Blackburn Rovers Football Club, as Rovers beat Spurs in the League Cup final to lift the trophy at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.
The first League Cup trophy win for Rovers in their history, and their second trophy win in the space of seven years, to go alongside the Premier League trophy, won in 1995. Rovers also secured UEFA Cup football for the following season, the 2002/3 season, as a result of winning the League Cup final.
Matt Jansen and Andy Cole fired the goals in this game, with Cole being the match winner. Shout out to Brad Friedel too, who was superb on the day, keeping Spurs out with a number of key saves.
League Cup Final, Season 2001/02.
That finish from Cole was so underrated
Understrength, out of form and completely written off beforehand by almost everyone made this such a satisfying win and a jolt to that season.
Almost everybody had handed the trophy to Spurs before a ball had been kicked. What a feeling for us to spoil the party. Mark Hughes was superb that day, in the centre of midfield too! What a day and what a squad Souness put together in those first few years.
@@rovers9585 100% true apparently all Spurs had to do was to turn up. Hughes did a phenomenal job especially without Tugay and Flitcroft. Happy memories and as you say a brilliant team.
Had 10 00 win rovers to win 2 1 and matt yansen to score first won over 3 00 00 quid Happy days
Was the announcer inebriated?
I thought it was Kermit the frog speaking
Loved it, what a time for Blackburn
What a fantastic day this was. Fond memories.
Why does it look like there's so much more space than usual
I've never heard of Mat Jansen before. Was he any good beucase he seemed to play well?
He was superb, Joe. Fired Rovers to promotion in 2001 and was on the verge of being in the England squad for the World Cup in 2002. Sadly, he had a motorbike accident in the summer of 2002 which caused him a brain injury. He wasn't the same player after that, but what a player he was before that accident. Hopefully will have some more Jansen videos coming up.
@@rovers9585I'd have to say I've never seen a worse goal conceded defensively to lose a cup final. Ledley King was so overrated.
Jansen was amazing but the injury Gods prevented his career from advancing
My enduring memory of this day was that it was the first time I got naked with my then girlfriend that lunchtime- then buggered off to watch Spurs lose
.
Girlfriend subsequently became my wife the following year
So you lost twice?
@@bananahammock9119 let’s call it a draw….. 😂
