The old-timey way to tamp sand without a machine is with this hunk of metal that looks like a log with handlebars. You need a weightlifter on heavy caffeine to wield it, and for 8 hours, but you can get it done.
I know the basic recipe for how to make those little glass baubles. My grandmother's neighbor used to whip them up by the jarful. Basically, you break soda and beer bottles, pick out the bigger pieces, and put them in a kiln. They melt into goo blobs, and then harden back into the "stones". I dunno how they're getting ahold of fancier colors like turquoise. I have a jar of greenies kicking around somewhere. I used to use them for snowman eyes.
