Mega Man 2 - Game Genie and Glitches
Вставка
- Опубліковано 31 сер 2009
- Clips from Mega Man 2 (NES) that demonstrate some fun and strange things that can happen when using Game Genie codes. Also included are a few glitches that didn't make it into the final cut of my playthrough of the game, which you can view here:
ua-cam.com/users/view_play_list...
Highlights include some seriously messed up music, a corrupted stage select screen, unbelievable jumping glitches, moonwalking, and a highly unusual glitch that teleports Mega Man to a deranged version of Dr. Wily's castle.

IKAAAE is infamous for all the weird, bizarre things it does to NES games. I tested the code on all 6 Mega Man games on NES, and here are my results:
Mega Man: nothing
Mega Man 2: deletes music and places Wily blocks at random in every stage, as well as screwing up the stage select screen
Mega Man 3: your shots are unable to damage enemies
Mega Man 4: fucks up the graphics, slows down the music, and deletes almost every enemy, including every Robot Master
Mega Man 5: I don't actually remember this one.
Mega Man 6: Fucks up the entire game. Try it. I dare you.
So basically, it adds an 'Impossible Mode' for Mega Man 3?
In Mega Man 5, you get hurt by shooting enemies if you enter that code.
Ah, did not know! I think it's because you have to put in a password to start the game, and I had none on hand, so I didn't know what it did.
Nice little tidbit of information, thanks!
Russell Royer No prob. Also when I input the code in the 6th game, all I get is just a black screen. (It even works on Godzilla: Monster of Monsters for the NES, but it's VERY minor since it just fucks up the title screen)
Hmm. I use FCEUX and it screws up the game entirely. What emulator do you use?
Metal man looks demonic after the "no music" code.
A little, yes.
Dragon Fart adds insult to Mega man's injury....
GeminiLaser, try activating the GPSSXS in this game, then charge up Atomic Fire. Doing that has some...intresting results.
Hm...I shall need to try this sometime.
hem
The game resets
That explanation for the super jump code is actually quite spot on! You can also do it with the correct amount of abusing a glitch with Item-1.
you know with IKAAAE there is another solid part of the Dr. Wily logo in Metal Man. well 3. one at the very beginning, 2nd around the midway point, 3rd past the midway point. all these can be walked on
Good to know.
thanks?
You know what's funny, I actually DO make CD mixes of squeaky-squonky Game Genie music! Back when I had a lot of time on my hands, I liked to just throw random codes at certain games to see if could get glitchy music, then record it for posterity. Got some wicked "remixes" out of Mega Man 3, Kirby's Adventure, the first TMNT game...really neat stuff!
As an aside, love your vids. Has anyone ever told you that your voice sounds a bit like Tom Kenny's?
Nice! And thank you! You're the first to mention Tom Kenny, but I've heard a number of comparisons in my time.
Who?
2:20-2:25
the horrible music made that fitting it made it feel like an old sci fi movie with wily turning into an alien
2:22 "Sometimes it's just... odd"
And fittingly alien for the... alien boss. XD
Your analysis of that super jump ladder climb thingy is spot on. It's possible to mess around "out of bounds" like that without game genie, which we do on purpose in speedruns.
Metal Man? You alright there? 2:51
Frankly, I'm more concerned about Air Man. He looks like he's been target practice for someone with a laser pistol.
GeminiLaser yes but quick man flash man heat man and crash man are empty inside
At least Wood Man and Bubble Man look okay. I think...
that scratchy music was so awesome. reminds me of some awkward techno music. Totally enjoyed it
Mega Man 2: Remixing fan favorite themes before it was cool.
Such fantastic music, 11.5/10
Megaman: cya heatman!
Heatman: what the fuck u coward
Turns out the messed up music comes from the Game Genie using a pitch bending feature of the audio processing unit to make its own sound effects, but then Mega Man 2 never resets this pitch bending unit when it starts up, it's just assumed to be untouched, so the effects carry over into the game.
Congrats on 10k
Did a good job on the shortcut to Dr. Wily Stage 1 without Game Genie codes.
I remember doing the heat man glitch on the 3ds virtual console by complete accident and I had to get a game over and I lost all my e tanks.
1:31 the music sounds cool with the cheat code on!
Heat Man gives you Item 1 when defeated, and there's a glitch in his fight that takes you to a messed-up version of Wily Stage 1.
Air Man gives you Item 2 when defeated, and there's a glitch is his fight that takes you to a messed-up version of Wily Stage 2.
What a coincidence.
I wanna find out which boss takes us to Wily 4, because that means they've been hiding a secret Item-4 on us all these years.
What does happen when you reach the end of glitch wily 1? Does the dragon fight begin? If so and is beatable, will it warp you to the regular wily2 stage or the glitched one?
That game genie music is GLORIOUS.
how do you make the music go nuts in a emulator say JNES using game genie?
The Game Genie music for the Wily Alien fight is actually fitting for it.
The credits song is called "Lamentations of a war machine" written by The Megas and it was ruined by the game genie D:
Hey guys I noticed something...
Heatman gives item 1 and can somehow teleport you to wily stage 1
Airman gives item 2 and can somehow teleport you to wily stage 2...
So since flashman gives item 3...

@GeminiLaser YOU ARE THE MAN you rock
Megaman 2 TASes use the weird properties of ladders to zip through stages. A favorite trick of theirs is to climb down a latdder but scroll the screen up somehow, winding up at the top of the new screen. Then they get hurled through the wall.
God I love Classic Megaman. It's just so hopelessely glitchy. It's fun!
Thanks to you,I was able to beat Megaman 2 and 3.Thanks Giminilaser!
"Don't stop 'til you get enough."
This made my day.
xD You said "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough" about the moonwalking. Michael Jackson references, anyone?
I'm proud of myself for figuring out why you needed the higher jump before we saw why :D
9:20
You can actually jump between 3 Item 2 platforms to reach the ladder. It's tricky timing, but it's doable.
You know, I like you. You're a game reviewer that's funny, that isn't afraid to reply to comments, gets, well, most of his work done, and is an awesome person. And for that, I solute you.
You need to upload more frequently! ! You are awesome! !!!!!!
The programmers put 2 stages per stage slot, so many levels have a counterpart found in a later address of the slot. (Example: Heatman level occurs in stage slot 00 and 08 from Rooms 00-23, as well as Dr. Wily 1 from Rooms 24-37; rooms beyond this range are just garbled mess). In Slot 01/09: Dr. Wily 2 - Airman. Slot 02/10: Dr. Wily 3 - Woodman. Slot 03/11: Dr. Wily 4 - Bubbleman. Slot 04/12: Dr. Wily 5 - Quickman.
Hey, how do you load the Mega Man ROM file on the Game Genie ROM file? I want to hear the cheeps and chirps on my MM2 Rom, but the Game Genie Encoder doesnt make it happen
I played Mega Man 2 a lot as a kid using the Game Genie. Always hoped there was a code to fix the music while playing using it.
Interestingly, in the Game Gear version of Quick Man's stage (which is a thing for some reason), the tip of the force beams doesn't kill Mega Man instantly, but when they're done moving they do kill you. My guess is that while it's moving it's a sprite set to deal damage (28 on the NES, 4 on the GG), whereas the tiles it leaves behind are non-solid spikes?
Also I have tried that Heatman glitch and got past that part where you needed Item 1..... it just took a while for me to get there without High Jump. (I used Item 3 along with Item 2, very hard though)
I swear to god when you played the credits, I could see FishMan at the end of the list of names.
The strange music is awesomely awesome :P XD
6:28 omg this happened to me once when i wasn't even using game genie! in fact it was the first time i ever managed to successfully dodge heatman's initial attack, then it was "wtf? i'm moving through the wall?"
you're my new hero.
hitting the force beam (cheese whiz) head on (like 2:03) is considered a enemy attack that does 28 hp which the code prevents.
hitting the side of the beam (like 2:06) is considered a one-hit kill like spikes which the code doesn't prevent.
I know this because in the anniversary collection, on easy mode hitting the beam head on deals only 14 hp (half)
if I remember in the game genie book doesn't it warn you that all codes make the music sound odd...its been 20 years
What does it is difficulty on megaman 2?
The more you know. Finally a decent explanation of this mess.
That music...best anti-piracy method ever.
How do you get that game genie hand thing? Respond plz
@GeminiLaser
I think Willow was the first game of Capcom's to not have messed up music if you used Game Genie.
As for using the Game Genie rom along with a game rom, how do you go about doing it? I thought that if you change the rom it would essentially just reset everything. This is my experience with everything from NESticle (DOS) to more recent emulators like jNES or FCEU.
Did the Wily Saucer make the ending music?
Xane Myers probably megaman whistling while shaken
Beating any boss in the Dr. Wily boss room results in only having beaten the ONE of the eight bosses, and returns you to stage select screen after (unless it's the last of the eight; then it takes you to Dr. Wily 1). It has no effect on the actual Dr. Wily stage or the boss there.
Also, if you defeat Clashman in Dr. Wily 6 through this glitch and fall into the pit, you must reset game... as starting any level will result in Megaman starting the level below the level and to his death.
***** I can't wait for the bonus video for MM7!
Neither can I! I swear I'm still working toward it...
4:08 climbing into the spike bed was too funny. Kamikaze Megaman XD
@GeminiLaser I read a page on TV Tropes a while back, and I think I remember it saying that Rockman 2's Normal mode is indentical to Mega Man 2's Difficult mode, With Rockman 2's Difficult mode being harder than MM2's difficult mode. I could be wrong, as the page listed difficulty differences from pretty much every game every game released in multiple regions, but I believe MM2 was listed.
As a side note, I laugh quite a bit a your videos, and I thank you for that.
Sounds like some of the instruments is offset from current soundfonts in the music file. maybe GG offset a value octave in music
I actually like the messed up music little bit :P
this is some of of the description:Clips from Mega Man 2 (NES) that demonstrate some fun and strange things that can happen when using Game Genie codes. A weird thing happened if you used crash bombs during bubble man and you go to the 3rd dr. Wily stage. I haven’t tested everything out since I play on legacy collection I can’t replicate it. But the shoot a crash bomb, get bubble man to jump on you while the bomb is exploding. If anyone can tell me what happens that would be great.
You said "I'm always running away", and it reminded me of Grand Theft Auto III. "Aris Running Shoes. Always running...from something!"
2:26 I have always wondered who the hell Fish Man was. He's NOT a robot master nor a Maverick, and the only enemy slightly related to him is Shark Man from Mega Man Battle Network.
Sharkman from Mega Man 3 DOS too.
onewiththerockin We must not mention that horrible game here...
It's not that horrible if you think about it. At least the spikes don't kill in one hit.
onewiththerockin But then there's the impossible intro stage with the dog... cat... thing.
What code is the Moonwalking cheat for?
THE MUSIC IS THE BEST THING EVER!
Dude, you're awesome!
Thank you! Check out my Collaborations and GameCola playlists-there are some recent new additions while you wait for more MM7!
When I was a kid I always wondered why Mega Man 2 reacted that way to Game Genie. I actually tried experimenting with different codes I knew affected music in other Mega Man games I had to stop or change it. Strangely enough though no matter what code iteration I put in, everything BUT the garbled music was altered. To this day I still have no clue why MM2 does that while EVERY other game in the series performs its music perfectly fine.
Geminilaser: The music sounds...awful.
Robot Masters: *Angrily stare at GeminiLaser*
I still have this game for nes I used to have a game genie code where he would shoot his own self but I forgot what i done with it. Didn't know about that heat man glitch though.
Wow, that'd be a fun code to see.
Yes, and I believe this was also the case in Mega Man for Game Gear, which is further indication it copied code straight from the NES games.
Game genie MM2 music still sounds better than Jacob satoriouses "music" heh heh
Sounds more tolerable than Justin Bieber music.
Mari Nikaido who is Jacob Satorious
Quickman may win A trash "singer"
Quickman may win You are lucky to not know him.
Kurumi Tokisaki lol
have you heard a channel called scykoh? he did a glitchfest for mega man 1
In some games, you can do moonwalking just pressing right mouse, while holding left or right (works on online games)
is it bad that i like the messed up music?
+Linda Wachtler nope
wasnt that bad
Yes.
nope
No
why not tell the codes for high jumps, moonwalking or the other codes shown in the video?
The reason that you get shunted to the other stages is because the other stages are placed directly after the Robot Master's rooms, just to save space.Maybe it's possible you can glitch to any Wily stage room from a Robot Master battle?
Without "nerds" like Gemini, us other "nerds" would fail to be so entertained! Keep up the awesome work, Gemini!
nice, are you gonna make these game genie videos for the other MM games?
me been me I deleted the mega jump code instead of turning it off well done me but what is the code for it
Dude, what emulator did u use to get the game genie codes to not cause squeaky music?
If you use an emulated Game Genie, you'll get the squeaky music; if the emulator you're using (in this case, FCEUltra) also supports code entry without a Game Genie ROM, then you should be able to apply the codes without the squeaking.
***** you can actually do this without the squeaky music on an NES by using a PowerPak (it has a built in game genie plugin)
As for weirder codes, I know I have a list of my experiments as a kid somewhere... I haven't found as many oddball MM3 GG codes done by other people, mostly variants on the more "useful" codes.
@GeminiLaser welcome
Oh wow, I haven't seen that game genie menu code input screen in nearly...20 years. Sheesh has it been that long?
I thought some changes in music were for the better
I'm guessing the messed up music was the rejected ones that was still in the coding?
Nope. If you die and then go back to the mecha dragon fight, then it is somewhat “playable”. You cant actually damage it and if you hit a certain area of the level, it restarts to the title screen.
I think this video is one of the reasons I made a UA-cam account back in '09. :P
Moonwalking sure is fun. I'll be doing a video series of it, so far I have only Bubble, Air and Flash Man to go. :D
weird i went through the files in the game and there is a glitch level for every stage, i might make a video on it.
well, the map files that is.
Sounds like a good plan!
Omg he replied, and right before my birthday too. I did end up making a video on it.
I think the reason the infinite energy failed is because some hazards just kill megaman without reducing energy. Namely spikes.
Interestingly enough, the death lasers in quickman's stage are two types of instant kill; the moving tip of the laser does enough damage to insta kill, but the lingering beam acts like spike desths.
5:35 In WHAT stage ?? LOL !! You real funny dude
I love the IKAAE code on Super Mario Bros., IT WILL MAKE YOU FEELHIGH. Pink screens, enimies become bowser butts, Slow game play, the lot
The music has reached Crazybus proportions...
You KNOW you're in trouble when that happens.
I love Megaman 2. I love it so much I recently reviewed it myself. Great vid.
I looking into this glitch with entering Dr. Wily stages from boss rooms. Here are results:
Dr. Wily 1 - Heatman
Dr. Wily 2 - Airman
Dr. Wily 3 - Woodman
Dr. Wily 4 - Bubbleman
Dr. Wily 5 - Quickman
Dr. Wily 6 - Clashman
Metalman/Flashman crash game.
If arrive to end of Dr. Wily stage w/o dying (boss music still play), the boss you currently fighting will be there (invisible, but shooting you). 05A8:00 makes boss vulnerable. End of Dr. Wily through Heatman has another bossdoor that crashes game
That first code is where Game Freak got the Gen 1 cries.
The post-Heat Wily 1 fixes its collision if you die (but not game over).
Here's a TAS where I don't do that!
ua-cam.com/video/_6JReRSqCMM/v-deo.html
if you die while in a certain spot doing the glitch at 4:32 you can warp to the boss room
Interesting. Might need to try that sometime.
